Visiting Lion Rock and Climbing Pidurangala in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
The best things to do in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka are to visit the famous Lion Rock and climb to the top of Pidurangala for incredible views of the Sigiriya area. The famous Lion Rock is also often called Sigiriya Rock and is considered to be the eighth world wonder by the Sri Lankan people. There isn't too much left today, but a King's fortress once existed on top of Lion Rock. It's history of being a place of bloodshed and family disputes sounds like it could be out of a movie, and is part of the reason it has been named a UNESCO world heritage site. It is unfathomable to think about what was required to build a fortress on top of a giant rock that is 180m above the ground. Sigiriya Rock is a remarkable place to visit and contemplate the long history that humans have in Sri Lanka.
After visiting Lion Rock we hopped back on Wanda (the scooter we are riding around Sri Lanka on) and made our way to Thalkote Wewa, a lake with incredible views of Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala (more on that in a sec). If you are visiting Sri Lanka and have access to your own vehicle, we recommend you make the beautiful drive to Thalkote Wewa. The drive to the lake is stunning, and you are rewarded with awesome views once you arrive. The lake was about a 20 minute drive from the incredible Guesthouse that we were staying at called Otunna Guest House, which you can check out at agoda.tp.st/MeGNzrYs
Finally, we made our way to Pidurangala Rock for sunset. Hiking up Pidurangala Rock requires some creativity and some scrambling, but we made it! Pidurangala Rock is famous because it is inexpensive to climb, and the views of Sigiriya Rock as stunning once you make it to the top. If you are visiting Sigiriya, we HIGHLY recommend you plan either a sunrise or sunset trip up to Pidurangala Rock. In our opinion, sunrise is best because there will be very few people there, but we didn't have good enough weather during our day in Sigiriya to visit at sunrise.
Unfortunately, at the end of the night we had planned on sharing an incredible Sri Lankan feast with you all, but we got some really bad news and couldn't film. We miss you and love you Lucy.
