Is this one of best hippie beaches in the world due to the uniqueness of the cave aspect? During the 60s this was a hippie hangout as the hippies flew into to Greece and lived in these caves in the Greek Islands! The most famous of the hippies is probably Canadian singer Joni Mitchell, who wrote a song about it called Carey. In this video I show you around the beach and we go exploring some of the caves.
It's hard to believe that people lived in those caves but they did. They are small, super dusty, not very comfortable, and can make someone with claustrophobia climb up a wall in a heartbeat! But it's not just the hippies that lived there (for a brief period of time), the Caves of Matala were also used by Christians in the 1st and 2nd Centuries as tombs - NOTE: I said in the video that the Christians used them as a "hangout" because that's what I heard at the time, but this might be incorrect. I'm having a hard time finding proper information right now, so sorry for the confusion! Originally, the caves were created during the Neolithic Age, while Matala became a port for Phaistos during the Minoan period (video upcoming). It was also a port of Gortys during the Roman period (video also upcoming)
The Matala beach is a little rocky but a nice beach overall. The views are great, you have the Matala Caves on one side and you have a restaurant lane on the other, where we go towards the end of this video. We eat Scala Matala, information below. We ate some giant beans (delicious), Greek Stuffed Vine Leafs, Grilled Red Snapper.
I ended the day with a nice swim to refresh.
