here's my verdict on this sorta thing. pet rat: funky little friend that you should never harm. feeder rat: it was bred specifically for this purpose so there's no point in complaining when the real pet eats it. wild rat: who cares. it just chewed a hole in my wall, chewed my fridge cord in half, then ate the rubber off my cooking utensils. it's lucky if my pets find it before I do.

Is there any benefit at all to feeding live, or do you just do it for fun? From the outside looking in on monitor keeping, it looks unnecessary, but maybe that’s just my speaking from years of experience keeping other reptiles.

It is important for the monitor actually, it gives them some environmental stimulation to act out natural instinct, which normal dead feeding doesn't provide. Of course they can still live on pre-killed prey, but your reptile might actually get "bored" with how little activity it gets done in it's life, rather than eating and drinking, seeing how most people these days won't play with their pets as much as they should.

HAK-DOS Can similar enrichment not be attained with creative toys or hell, even frozen food on a string? I still don’t see much benefit there is to be gained from, say, two minutes at most of whacking a mouse around, especially when, as in the video, the monitor isn’t chasing it, and is just being given the live animal without actually hunting it? I have trouble seeing how it really makes the animal’s life better or healthier.

My Argus would have been in the box before I could have removed the rat. Must be nice to have a calmer species.

You can’t feed wild rodents because they are full of parasites which means the lizard will get parasites. There are rodents bred in captivity for the only purpose of being fed to other animals, lizards, birds of prey, snakes etc. It won’t eat like that often because it will get fat but other food every couple of days, reptiles have slower metabolism so eat less often than mammals.

If you dont agree with it don't watch it at the end of the day this is how it needs to eat and stay healthy why people watch these videos and the have a hissy fit about the beautiful lizard eat and you won't be complaining if the rodents were in your house so then you would get rid of them by gassing them which if you know takes up to 15 mins for the rodents to die at the end of the day if you don't like or don't agree why the hell watch the videos them take to the comments goin on about it's cruel if you have not seen rodents after they have been exterminated they shrink and fit and eyes pop out it's a lot better way to die than being gassed which takes a lot longer and painful for them to die it's also life thanks for the great video's and content really amazing that a reptile of such a size can be free t9 roam and show affection to us is absolutely amazing thanks from the north east of England
