Good job I did this once because I didn’t have money for a new center diff. Now I make sure to have $500 set aside😂

just rebuilt mine with 2 million cst silicon fluid for 20kg centre diff for 4x4 offroading. the 2m is wayyyyyy thicker than what you use there.

Usually you don't need parts, you just gotta clean the burnt fluid out and fill it back up the same way it came apart. This is a link to what kind of silicone oil weight you need, The subaru viscous diff fills up with 50ml of this stuff www.rcamerica.com/hudy-ultimate-silicone-oil-1-000-000-cst-50ml-106692

Hey man thanks. I bought my teen son a 2004 Impreza Outback 5-speed, 156,000 miles. AWD of course. We didn't notice a whine noise, but it just started clicking or tapping around curves and acceleration. I can feel the tapping in the gear shift handle. And it seems it sometimes loses AWD grip when it taps. So I think the center diff is binding the output shafts sometimes. I bet mine is not rebuildable due to getting hot. I see them new with 2 year warranty for $185 on ebay. And $600 if OEM from Subaru. Any preference?

Oh hey there, yeah mine would heat up then sound like binding/gear skipping near the stick or behind the radio whenever i took a sharp turn or tried to park in a parking spot. I did buy the OEM center diff new for $600 bucks but decided to try the rebuild anywho, and im still running the rebuild over 25k miles and i still got the new one sitting in the basement =] It's actually a pretty easy job belive it or not if you can get under the car, or have access to a lift and some swivels and extensions for your drill.

@djrisque1984 the reason why I don't think it's the transmission gears themselves is because it makes the noise in all gears while in curves or quickly accelerating. It will do it while coasting in all gears as well, but not as much, and only when not going straight.

Hey there! You'll need 50ml of 100,000 cSt Silicone oil to fill this particular viscous coupling center diff on a Subaru, most seem to use it. here's a link www.rcamerica.com/hudy-ultimate-silicone-oil-1-000-000-cst-50ml-106692

@@procrastinator1842 I would say that's intersting except you failed to offer up a solution and only provided a statement wich is utterly useless to me and other people, good job helping other people... I guess the fact that this fixed my vehicle and I've had fun driving is this configuration for over 30,000 miles since the fix doesn't matter either. I also enjoy the perfectly balanced drifting i do on all the dirt track around my location and all the 120mph+ rips on the straights are also very stable and fun. Enjoy your probablty boring ass life dog...

No, I just dove into that shit head first without checking much lol, I'm more of an IT guy and plant expert, but I also enjoy fixing anything and everything before I'll pay someone else to do it... Same repair going strong tho for years now 💪
