You're right when you say that many people don't know who Cossacks were and to which cultural heritage they belong. Many think they are Russians, and there's nothing more wrong. There's a reason why does someone think so. Cause the name "Cossack" is often linked to the Kuban region, once a Ukrainian territory, later conquered by Russia. The Cossacks are Ukrainian warriors who founded one of the first democratic states in Europe, Zaporìzhska Sich(from Zaporizhzhia, the name of a Ukrainian city). Otaman (major of the army and head of State), was elected annually. But there weren't only Ukrainians, the Cossacks welcomed willing men from other countries, who wanted to become free and well-paid warriors. So, the foreign legion already existed then. They were very brave and skilled warriors. There was an expression: "A Cossack isn't afraid of anyone but his wife".😀That because there has always been an undeclared matriarchy in Ukraine. Women have always been respected. Because they were both gentle and feminine and strong-willed and brave. Since the Cossack was a warrior, initially hopac wasn't a dance, but a fight technique, later revisited and transformed into dance. It's a real joy to see a person from the other country who disseminates and introduces the culture of Ukraine. Thanks Momo! 👊❤️

Hello, Uncle Momo! Since you made a reaction to the Ukrainian dance Hopak, I want to thank you for it (you will receive a small present from me). But I will write about it at the end of the comment. First, let me explain that Hopak is a traditional Ukrainian war dance of Zaporizhzhia (Cossack) origin. The name of the dance comes from the exclamation "hop!" during its performance. The size is 2/4. It is performed solo or in groups at a fast pace with virtuoso dizzying jumps. Hopak originated in the life of the Cossack Zaporozhian Army. Originally performed by men, modern hopak is danced by both men and women, but the male part remains the leading one. The performance of hopak includes elements of choreographic improvisation: jumps, crouches, spins, and other virtuoso dance moves. There are different variants of hopak - solo, paired, group. Hopak often has a majestic, heroic character. Hopak is a kind of dance in which Cossacks demonstrated their character, strength, courage, and competed in agility. The Cossack dancers stood in a circle performing arbitrary movements, and their comrades supported them with shouts of "Hop!" and "Hey!". And now about my present to you) Hopak is a very popular dance in Ukraine among young people. I am giving you a link to a Povzunec dance (type of Hopak) performed by school boys. You won't find this video, which has more than 4 million views on KZread, because it's hidden and not searchable. You can only watch it through a direct link. This video was uploaded by my wife, but she hid it over time because there are too many negative comments about Ukraine written by Russians. The dance became part of the golden fund of national choreographic art. Enjoy your viewing! kzread.info/dash/bejne/i22j0ryaf7jXfM4.html

hopac is men's army training dance of cossaks. so the clothing related to central, easten regions of UA (cossak state regions): men's clothing in video is for military campaigns btw, as it is very comfy, in civil life cossaks were like very dandy: expensive fabrics "coats", fur collars, hats, drinking coffe(UA coffe culture came from the south of UA) and smoring lulka)) also here you do not see much ethnik cossak hair done and traditional ear rings marking single son in family (left ear), last man of the family (2 ears) girls: you can distingvish regions by ornaments and hair embeleshments. Kyiv, central, east of UA: flovers ornaments, can be rombs, red&black colors for ornaments, red boots, hair jerverly vinok with flovers and ribbons as in video or single ribbon around the head, can be with flowers stepped near ears under the ribbon or white handkerchief namitka. south of UA: can be birds in ornaments, coverfull ornamets other similar to central or pretty different qirimli ornaments (crimea tatar)& haire embeleshment feska, long dreesess, hair can be 2 braids for yand, multiple braids for yangest. west of UA: more geomentical ornaments ofter like diagonal lines on sleaves, colors green&red, hair is done with handkerchief, handkerchief with pompoms, white handkerchief namitka, single ribbon

Hey, Uncle Momo! Thanks for your reaction, I've been waiting for it 😊 I"ll copy my comment about hopak ( your video ARKUSH - Happy End), maybe you've missed it The roots of hopak go back to cossack times, it was a part of their martial training. The chronicles of those times say that when a foreign traveler was asked to describe the cossacks’ training, he said, “they just dance and sing”) This dance is distinguished by specific movements which witness its historical roots, some of them develop strength and agility, the others train unit cohesion and synchronised actions required in combat. There are also a lot of whirling movements which train not only agility but also can help in achieving a trance state. It was a common practice of so-called cossacks characternyk, who possessed some magic powers. Several years ago, I watched an interview with the head of the jury at the world karate championship where he expressed his admiration and surprise at the hopak performance, which he saw in one of the Ukrainian theaters. He said, “those guys have 10 times more powerful skills than any karate champion!” I’m not sure about that but it was nice to hear) In 1940, the Ukrainian dancer and choreographer Pavlo Virsky founded the Ukrainian National Folk Dance Ensemble and created the modern choreography of hopak, which became the classical version of this dance, combining several Ukrainian folk dances. Here is the link to one of the fullest versions of hopak: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4ObxtSrqrLPYaQ.html I’d like to note, that at 7:30 there is a 70-seconds part with a Russian dance called Yablochko. I’m not sure why it’s included in this performance, maybe because of its similarity with hopak but still, it looks rather odd to me)

I don´t know whether it has something to do with alkohol. Cossacs didn*t appreciate drinking. We are not Russians and alcohol doesn*t play the same role in our culture. This dance, especially for men is a military training, that they did even ih the military training was forbidden. They transformed it into a dance. That*s why you see so much of kicking elements. There exists an Ukrainian martiary art "battle hopak". It is not well known, but it has a lot of movements from these dances.

Tatars, Turks, Russians, Polish people. The enemy could come from everywhere. A couple of drunkards couldnt have had so much success, did they? Cossacs were wery strict with alkohol consumption. They could even kill one of them, if je was drunk before the battle. On the other side, the gossips, thar cossacs are dtinkards were sometimes good gor cossacs themselves. Uncle Momo, great on you trying to speak Ukrainian. I only recommend is to slow down when you speak it will help great deal to reduce accent.

On the basis of Hopak, the Ukrainians created a combat Hopak. You will see for yourself. The boys had elements that could be used to defend themselves. Look for such a video somehow.

Hopak is really a very physically and technically tough and demanding dance, because it is not just a dance, it's a martial art in connection with dance. It's like the Maori has their unique way of demotivating their enemy, and we Ukrainians have ours :) Ukrainian army went into battle dancing as if flirting with death and showing the enemy that nothing scares us, we're ready to die in this fight, and we will dancing! Hopak is a vivid example of how strong-spirited Ukrainians have always been to this time 🇺🇦 Word Cossack means "free man" who invites death to his dance ✊ Thank you for your support of Ukraine for all this time!
