Virginia Zeani sings Amina in the finale of La Sonnambula. Amina has sleepwalked across a bridge over a mill wheel and thus convinced the villagers and her fiancee that she is innocent of any misconduct. She wakes up to general rejoicing and one of serious opera's rare happy endings
This is a live performance from 1959. Zeani can be heard making an false early entry as the cabaletta begins but quickly recovers, demonstrating the hazards of live performance when the singer can often not even hear the accompanying orchestra! The recorded quality leaves much to be desired but the performance is full of vivacity.

Marvellous bravura singing from Zenaida whom both Sutherland and Bonynge held in very high esteem. As well as being a beautiful woman she was one of the greatest coloratura sopranos of her generation

Pensate che domani la Zeani compie 95 anni, l'allieva preferita di Pertile vanta oltre 640 recite in Violetta.

So very GORGEOUS! Zeani magnificently captures all the joy and bliss Amina experiences in expecting to be united with Elvino for life! (The only Amina I've heard so far that could fully measure up with Callas.) By the way, the tenor sounds like Nicoa Monti, am I right?

Tomba2, si si...Virginia era straordinaria ma qua' non s'era pero' preparata troppo....aveva scambiato Amina per Lodoletta...aveva comunque una voce troppo ricca e sostanziosa per affrontare un ruolo del genere. Tomba2, ciao.

Domani la Zeani compie 95 anni e' stata l'allieva preferita da Pertile, ha recitato cantato con grandi tenori Del Monaco Prevedi Bergonzi Di Stefano Corelli Pavarotti Gigli, Tucker, ha all'attivo oltre 640 recite in Violetta.
What a shame that the recording was so poor when the singing was so great.

Isn't that Nicola Monti singing Elvino? Was he the *only* tenor who sang that role back then? He recorded it with both Callas and Sutherland...

Die Stimmen von Virginia Zeani und Adelaide Negri sind sich ähnlich, da sie beide dramitische Kolloratursoprane (soprani sfogati)sind.Es gab eben neben Maria Callas noch andere phantastische Sängerinnen.Bravissima Virginia Zeani-vielen ,vielen Dank Charlottein Weimar für das kostbare Video......
Dear Heraopera Do have your free-wheeling discussions but why not use your own channel as a platform to conduct matters as you prefer? When I feature a particular singer here it is to focus on THEIR WORK & relevant comment & discussion is welcome. Many other channels are cluttered with lists & boring likes & dislikes (often fanatically pro or anti-Callas) which I find disrespectful to the featured singer. This matter never arose before & my channel is praised as a civilised, informative haven.

@abracadabranque You can never be absolutely sure about the pitch as these items have gone through so many re-recordings on different equipment that the original is not always faithfully reproduced.
