And Avery Johnson was an instant replay of Anthony Grant. Both of them came in saying they were going to play uptempo and ended up playing plodding mediocre basketball that was painful to watch. Avery didn't know how to sit down and shut up and let the players play. He was screaming and trying to micromanage every possession.

Every time I heard an announcer yapping about Virginia's latest 52-46 win and their vaunted "pack line defense", I was ready to vomit. It's so good to see his style of play implode. Last night on their first 4 or 5 possessions they either had a shot clock violation or threw up a near prayer with under 3 seconds left on the shot clock. They are just brutal to watch and were even when they had talent.

Closest I got was the Auburn final four game and even then it hurt. They didn’t deserve to be in the tourney and time after time they show why. If a team can’t break 50 points consistently should they even be considered a D1 school.

UVA's first 4 or 5 possessions last night were a shot clock violation, then a bunch of bad shots with the shot clock under 3, one of them that went in. Does Bennett have a minimum 3 or 5 pass rule, or no shots that aren't layups until the shot clock is under 10? It is excruciating to watch.

This was a tough year for Virginia. The issue was talent and experience (and a disastrous inability to shoot the basketball, especially including free throws, which is why NC State got into the NCAA tournament at all). Too many of his players hadn't played together, hadn't experienced tough college competition, or played at the college level at all. The four transfers contributed but did not step up with consistent big-time performances, which is why none of them started throughout the season. Basically, Virginia had one big-time player: Reece Beekman, who is a superb point guard (and who likely will play in the NBA). Ryan Dunn, though impressive defensively and capable of circus dunks, was a disappointment on the offensive end. Bennett needs to do a better job getting really good players in the portal. He knows what he is doing, but will he get what he needs? This year's portal will be a good test. As disappointing as the year was, the bottom line is that Bennett is a fine coach, and his team this year won 23 games and finished 3rd in the ACC (a conference that with four teams in the Sweet Sixteen has shown better than the conventional wisdom would have you believe).

Tom Izzo is whining that he doesn't understand analytics and they are too much of the selection process. He wants a committee with former coaches like Coach K, Roy Williams and Boeheim to give their input. What Izzo is really saying is I didn't like being on the bubble and our losses where we had an injury should be excused, we need to make this more of a good old boy process where I can lobby my buddies who have input into the selections. Every time Izzo opens his mouth I dislike him more.

How can they trust their eyes when they never watch enough games or perhaps don't understand the game? The badly flawed NET/quad system and the availabliity of advanced metrics that reward running up scores has allowed the NCAA to appoint a lazy, stupid panel. Being on the Committee should be a full-season job. Every Member should be required to watch hundreds of games. Rather than ADs who are too busy to do this job right, I'd much prefer a Committee made up of Las Vegas bookmakers or big-time sports bettors. They have to know who's playing well or they lose a lot of money. This panel was generous with several teams based on past success, eg, UVa, Kan, Gonzaga, MSU. It discarded the once-used criteriion of "did they finish strong?" -- that would have eliminated UVa -- and instead put all their eggs into the stupid Quad system that creates false positives and negatives on the basis of a handful of early-season interconference games. I have no effing idea what they were thinking when they put UConn, ISU, Aub and ILL into one bracket. That's clearly 4 of the best 10 teams in one bracket, and all they had to do was look at the adv metrics to know that, but the eye test would have made it even more obvious.

  • @Don-md6wn

The last 2 or 3 teams that get in and the last 2 or 3 that don't are of little consequence. If you end up on the bubble you didn't do enough and have nothing to complain about. If you do away with analytics and turn it back to the "eye test", it just evolves to a Good Old Boys club where coaches like Izzo, Pitino and Tony Bennett always get the benefit of the doubt over mid majors. There is no perfect selection system.

@@hotdangers A lot of teams are playing with four "big guards" these days. They are mostly trading defense for offense. It creates mismatches both ways when they are playing a more traditional roster with a post man and smaller, quick guards. IMO, they should be playing zone against post players and penetrating guards. No one likes to do it because you can't get away with as much hacking in a zone. ILL and KY are simliar teams. On paper, they have the most offensive talent in cbb. KY has a slew of players (eg, Wagner, Dillingham, Shephard, Reaves, Mitchell) likely to be drafted in Rounds 1 oe 2 and a few might be NBA starters at some point. ILL has two great offensive players in Shannon and Damask, both of whom are triple threats. Both teams have athleticsm and depth. Neither plays good defense. When ILL plays ISU, it will be one of the best offenses against the best defense. It will be interesting.
