🧒 Viper Classic Handcuffs - Metal toy cuffs which are "not bad" for what they are

Ғылым және технология

These are "cheapo" handcuffs made by Viper. They are sold as their "Classic" model. Let's face it, they're toys. They are made of decently solid and weighty steel and are very smooth in their action. I had these as a kid, sold under generic no-name brands. They used to cost about £5 from the joke shop in town. They used to make models like this with the lever on the side. But I was always the kid with this version that had no safety lever to open them.
Now, these do feel perhaps slightly better quality than the ones I had back in the day. But the chains are still non-welded and they are not the best for large wrists. Instead of having teeth and a pawl, they have holes in the bow and a wheel with spikes on which act as the closing mechanism.
They have large open keyways that you can drive a truck into, in case you lose the key, so you can jab many potential things in there to get them open.
Very weirdly, this particular design is based off of a REAL Japanese police handcuff. You can tell the old "real" ones apart because they have a pretty solid casing and have no visible rivets. If you want to see what REAL original actual police version of these handcuffs looked like, have a look at these two images: i.imgur.com/Hh9ezqt.png
All in all, they are not bad toys. Amongst the most budget handcuffs, they are decent quality. But if you can spring for the more modern style of police handcuff they would be better quality and more secure.
I am not adding these to my collection image or lists, as I only bought these mainly as a "stroll down memory lane", to see from my modern perspective, what I think about these handcuffs. There are even lower budget versions of this which are GARBAGE. I had a pair of black low budget ones I will try and add a card link near the end of the video if you want to see rubbish versions.
Enjoy!

Thanks for posting the video, and those handcuffs are just as I imagined they would look like. I used to buy them a lot as a kid but the only difference is the ones I used to buy had a safety latch to unlock them as well as a key. Also the keys are the same from what I remember them. Not a bad Handcuff to have to compare to a real police issue Handcuff.

Yeah. They are clearly not a "good" handcuff but as toys they are really good I think.

They break over time. The locking mechanism jams, and the rivet that holds the double strands loosens over time and isn't secure. This goes same with other cuffs such as vipertek and other cheap brand "steel" cuffs.

They cannot withstand Parker lol. They are easy to open.

Parker easily opens these. As does a large variety of different items... 😂

@@CoxysPicks even though both of u guys are masters at cuff picking out of Smith & Wesson, peerless and ASP ultra cuffs what would you recommend for an American law enforcement officer to carry that the average joe would have the most difficulty picking in the back of a squad car???

I would recommend peerless. The 750c has a super tight keyway meaning not many foreign objects can get into the cuff. Also not many people show how to pick peerless, so if they try the bent Bobby pin that works on S&W they will be wearing those cuffs for a while. ASP are a great cuff - and the double lock being reversed will also potentially confuse someone who is unfamiliar with the handcuff. If we are looking for a cheap, reliable chain handcuff then realistically you should consider TCH 820. The larger bow allows for a much greater selection of wrist sizes, and that triple pawl is an absolute beast to pick quickly. Money no object? Get the S&W 104-1. You need to very skilled to pick that model of handcuff. Seriously money no object? Get clejuso model 9, that's an absolute monster of a lock mechanism.

@@johnlynch1896 I agree with everything Coxy replied with. I would say, if a suspect is adequately searched, an actual key would be unlikely to be there, so make-shift tools like bobby pins and parker clips would be most likely. Chicago X22 would be a low cost good solution I think. Nothing is 100% un-escapable. A trained person could pick the double lock and shim open a Clejuso model 9. So the key is to ensure good fitment of the cuffs to the wrists and that a good search is done of the person to restrict access to keys and tools. Even with a high security cuff, it's not impossible for some people to slip cuffs from their back to the front, either by going over their head or down over their butt, so people need to be monitored and not left alone. I'd say a hinged cuff, applied in a rear stack would likely prevent someone slipping cuffs to their front to more easily manipulate the mechanisms. So if you had an ASP hinged model with high security blue mechanism, that may be a great option. The hinge restricts movement, the rear stack makes precision access to tools harder, limits the chance of someone having perfect practised picking techniques and the blue mechanism means if someone is just trying to pick the handcuff, they will almost certainly fail. The only way to get a double locked blue mechanism ASP off (realistically) is to pick off the double lock and use a shim, which may require needing 2 tools and would be tricky as hell with a rear stack where you don't have the other hand to tighten to accurately shim.

I think they leave them on purpose due to lower costs. They are decently strong, but it just adds to the fact that these are toys, rather than real, secure, handcuffs.

To compare to the cheapo ones you tend to see. I had these ones as a kid, so I wanted a pair to have to remind me of the kind I had back then.
