Violet's World: The Boy Who Redefines Gender Norms!

Leo is an articulate, sassy, amazingly mature 11 year old boy who loves doing make-up, dressing up and playing with his identity. He doesn’t want to be a girl but he does want the liberty to do ‘girlish’ things and above all to be who he is.

The mother says he 'found' the drag race show, she thought it was inappropriate, but then she started seeing him dancing around the house and doing splits. Does it never occur to any of these parents to direct their children's interests to something similar, but age appropriate? There are kids shows that have age appropriate songs with dance or dance exercise moves.

I would never let my preteen daughter leave the house in fishnet tights and a full face of makeup, no matter how beautifully done. I’m glad he’s expressing himself; he seems like a wonderful person. But I wonder if most of the people reacting to him think he’s a hyper-sexualized *girl* child. Society definitely doesn’t think little girls should strut around looking like adult prostitutes, so I’m not sure why little boys would do it and expect zero backlash. If he identified as a girl, I doubt she’d let him wear this.

I just wonder what TF is wrong with you people that manage to see something "sexual" about a little boy that just like to play with makeup and gender roles, and so obviously just love life. Naturally his mom have to protect him from weirdos, but it make me really sad to think that perhaps there's more "normal" weirdos then weird weirdo's, if that make sense. Just let the kid have fun, and leave it up to parents and teachers to protect him. I just think he might need protection from judgmental weirdos, like people thinking there's something bad about him having fun, as in the above comments. Poor people...

Kids today are often exposed early on to adult content... It's important that his mother discusses with him the implications of his online presence for example, or his use of the word vixen. He sounds like a thoughtful, highly intelligent, creative young individual. To me, it portrayed at least that he has the skills and the support (at least for now) necessary to be able to make the best choices he can ..what's the difference bw this and performing theater ? At least as it was portrayed, he does not feel disgust or shame about his body, no desire to mutilate or harm himself, etc (often symptoms of children who are unable to express their gender identity or sexual preference due to risk of shame, isolation, potentially abuse) ... I am glad this portrays an example of a unique individual capable of thriving in today's world, being successful, gaining skills and understanding of the world... Ultimately his choices in life have already led him on quite the adventure ... He seems to have learned more about the world than many have at his age. I am curious if you Would have considered him oversexualized if this was a video about a young girl with the persona violet vixen who likes to play with makeup and dress up ?

@@nikkijohnson94 Yes, if he was a girl, I would definitely consider that behavior to be oversexualized. I thought the dance the kids were performing was a little much as well. As a matter of fact, wearing all that makeup and those clothes & shoes in public is highly inappropriate for a girl of 11, and if anything, I thought it a little LESS inappropriate because he's a boy. So people aren't having negative reactions because it's a boy wearing female clothing & makeup.... it's just that it's obvious that the kid is oversexualized!

So we become somewhat ostracized and alone. When you don't have a social circle imagine what we choose to replace it with? The internet, our own thoughts, we close our world and choose to avoid the toxicity of these judgments by what everyone else is pushing on us. The only thing that bothers me is how absorbed he seems to be in the internet. He's literally parroting Jeffree Star, a person in his 30's. I love Jeffree and Drag Race but I'm not really sure it's appropriate for an 11 year old to be mimicking full grown adults. Just bothered me when he used the phrase, "the real tea." How much tea does an 11 year old have to spill? lol Also these people totally have media personalities, with the cameras are off they're not always putting on full-face or acting dramatic. In Shane Dawson's new series you can see that Jeffree works really hard for what he has, he runs a business and a lot of the drag queens have casual lives off stage. There's nothing wrong with the makeup and clothes, that IS freedom of expression but I think he needs to be more aware that these people's media personalities aren't necessarily representative of how they act/look day to day. The larger issue here is the seemingly unrestricted access to the internet at his age.

My kids don’t watch KZread. Problem solved. They play outside, have toys and use their imaginations in play. They watch normal kids programmes. They read books and are read to. My eldest who is 16 has a phone and access to KZread etc. My other kids who are all under the age of 12 do not. Due to the profession I work in, there is too many ill intentioned people on the internet. It’s an infinite world and an easy tool for the wrong people to use for nefarious means. I have no photos of my kids on social media. I wonder how many people realise how easy it is to copy a strangers photo and reproduce it? How many wrong hands the photo could get into? How that photo could be edited to become something totally different from the innocence it was posted in as there are more and more tools out there to edit images and videos. Please parents, invest in some top privacy and security tools that screen and filter content on your kids devices if you want them to have access to the internet. I honestly cannot stress this enough.

Im absolutly amazed that you are getting as many thumbs up as you are. What you are saying might sound reasonable on paper, but we aren't talking about an interest in volcanoes or stamp collecting or things that young kids do. Have people actually watched the documentary and understood why so many parents would not pander to their children the very first time they came to them with this ? Taking your kids to drag shows and bearing in mind there will occasionally be creeps and perverts there too, would you want that for your kids ? I wouldnt. Im a Father to an amazing 12 year old son. Neither me or his Mum would think this ok, i dont know anyone of my friends who would either. Im not angry at the kid, i think his Mum is negligent and degenarate. IF at age 18 he decides he thinks its cool to put on wigs and makeup to become a fake woman then so be it, but kids grow out of things. Just think of all the things kids get obsessed about then a year later you find its something else they move on to. His Mum treating him as an adult and taking it all seriously in the first place has enabled this to occur. Be a real parent to him. Show love through discipline and by limiting what he sees on a tv screen or the internet. He has obviously been influienced by trashy tv programs that no little boy should be watching in the first place. If you are a parent you may feel differently on things like i do. Then again you may not. This is my opinion. You have yours.

It’s one thing if kids wear makeup because adults in their lives implies that they’re not good enough as their are and empathize that the way someone looks is what’s important. We see it on beauty pageants, parents who completely disregard their kids interests or wishes and teach them that they’re not good enough as they are. This does not seem like that. This kid is clearly exploring and having fun and the mum is not pushing him. To shame kids for going after what interests them or to tell them they can’t be a certain way, that’s what’s harmful.

"He likes to hang out with adults a lot." This is why children need to socialize with other children or be taught that they are separate from the adults. You can tell the mother wants him to be her little best friend. It's sad. Isn't there a rule about the ages on KZread by the way? What makes this mother think it's a good idea for an ten year old to have a KZread channel? The more i watch, the more i just feel so bad for this kid.. I can tell they're trying to present it as if everything is all wonderful and happy for this kid, but you can tell he has a lot of sadness and loneliness and the mother is just further alienating him from his peers by encouraging this stuff. She's closing all kinds of doors for his future when childhood is supposed to be about keeping all possibility open. Think about it. What kind of future can this kid have if he keeps this up? Really only one. He can be a drag queen. And how many ten or eleven year olds want to be the same thing they want to do as adults?

You can just tell by the way this child is talking and what he says that he's far too influenced by adults on social media. A young kid shouldn't be calling themselves a vixen and if this was a girl this age doing makeup on instagram and KZread people would have a problem with it, but others are too scared to say anything in case it comes across as 'transphobic' even though he still identifies as a male. It's just really obnoxious when he talks about people like him getting kicked out of their home as if he is the same age as all of these youtubers who share these kind of stories about being kicked out for being LGBT. Also how this child keeps saying 'when I was two' and 'when I was seven' is like an adult would say 'when I was in my early twenties/thirties', you can just tell that this child thinks too highly of themselves and needs desperately to spend more time with other children. I don't care about the whole 'boys wearing makeup' thing but I hate the way this child wants to be an internet celebrity and it comes across that he thinks being a drag queen is the only way he can do that. He even copied Jeffrey Star's intro.

My God.. I'm a die hard Rupauls drag race fan and I'm sorry but I wouldn't let my kid watch the show, especially if they were getting that invested into the culture. There are very adult meanings behind those phrases. Children are extremely impressionable and it's a parents job to monitor what our children watch and become influenced by and it's the parents job to also put a stop to something like this and say nope, sorry, you can learn about this when you're a bit older, but this is too adult for you right now. There is nothing wrong with a young person being apart of drag culture, but not a child this young. It's extremely inappropriate. And the saddest part is that I know that I will be attacked for saying this when all I'm doing is trying to look out for the health of a child. Some extreme times we live in...

It’s not only an adult issue, obviously, since this is something that’s being addressed by school uniform policies all over. Also, if you watched the video, you would see that he doesn’t dress in full drag in public very often. It’s only for special evens. It’s something that he enjoys. Why shouldn’t he be able to express it? He isn’t hurting anyone

It's highly disturbing that a mother encourages her ten year son to spend all day applying make up and admiring himself in the mirror. Sorry it is not normal behaviour

Actually I am most concerned about his eyesight. He has a severe 'turns' in his eyes, also known as strabismus (eye misalignment). His mommy needs to get that repaired as it is indicative of a problem with the binocular function in the brain. He needs vision treatment, prisms, special glasses or even surgery. Who cares about mascara if your eyesight deteriorates?

(havent watched the entire documentary yet) but i wanna say this real quick: i love rupauls drag race myself, but im 23 and an adult. this show is not for kids, its very sexual from time to time and the language also isnt appropriate. and about his drag makeup: its fine if he does it from time to time but wearing loats of super heavy makeup isnt good for a childs skin, i surely wont allow my kids to use any makeup before theyre like 13 :/

plus having him (sexually) lie on the ground with fishnets and high heeled shoes at a train station.. sorry but that really goes too far. his parents could simply tell him "honey if you wanna wear a dress thats fine but youre simply too young for makeup, wigs and high heels. wait until youre a little older and you can do whatever you want"

Blackmatchalatte I agree there is nothing wrong with what he is doing and he seems a very happy intelligent child. But as a Mum I wouldn’t be putting him out there on the internet with photos etc... and he seems to want the makeup etc all the time. As you say limit it from time to time. He a lovely child and I say he will go far 💖
