Violent Thunderstorms + Close Lightning! June 14, 2015

Ғылым және технология

Outro Music: Kevin MacLeod "Phantom From Space"
I decided to bring back one of my favorites, this time with never-before-seen video of another storm.
On June 14, 2015, clusters of strong thunderstorms were moving east across the Great Lakes region ahead of a powerful gust front.
5:15 PM: The first thunderstorm hit, producing a wall of heavy rain. The storm started to produce lightning strikes that were soon enveloped in the rain and only appeared as flashes. I stopped filming as the storm got too close.
After this I made a huge mistake: I stopped paying attention to the weather, ruining my chances of seeing a jaw-dropping display of cloud-to-ground lightning.
At 5:51 PM, the gust front hit, and I was completely oblivious until I heard a loud crack of thunder. I let my camera roll out my bedroom window and captured three powerful lightning bolts. There were many other flashes, some within the rain, others from bolts striking behind me. The lightning slithered to the ground underneath a large shelf cloud ahead of a blue-green curtain of heavy rain. Soon the rain overtook me and the bolts were no longer visible.
At 6:18 PM, the storm was passing. Faint thunder could be heard behind me. All over town, ambulance and firetruck sirens were blaring as many objects in the area were struck by lightning. Electricity was temporarily knocked out.
6:51 PM: a new thunderstorm was approaching. This storm produced infrequent lightning and beautiful rain curtains that pushed against each other as the storm moved northeast toward me. Again, we were overtaken by heavy rain.
7:55 PM: A new storm approached from the west, producing a small shelf cloud and frequent flashes of lightning. As the storm approached and revealed its black underbelly behind the tiny shelf cloud, the flashes became nearly constant and the thunder grew louder. Soon, heavy rain poured down again.
At 8:12 PM, the storm had completely overtaken us, still producing bright and nearly constant lightning flashes, along with rain and high winds.

It's simply amazing that this kind of electrical energy is created by rain and tiny hail stones bouncing of each other. Enough electricity to create a 50,000 degree bolt of lightning that can jump from cloud to cloud and cloud to ground. Not to mention ignite or explode trees and telephone poles. Yet it's so beautiful to see and watch.

We grade the lightening strikes from 1to 10 . We haven’t had a 10 yet .Lots of 9s .

@@kpoplover36884 I hope you do that in a safe shelter. I totally understand your fear, because I've lived through two deadly tornadoes 10 years to the day apart from each other. It's much better now, and I'd even like to go on a storm chase with someone who isn't willing to get too close to these storms. If I can hear it, (depending on how big it is and where I am in relation to the storm or tornado), that's good enough for me, just as long as I'm not in the inflow or outer circulation. That's weigh too close for me. I do have to admit that the sound of whistling and howling winds is exciting to a certain extent.

One night there was a thunderstorm, and lightning struck right on our next-door neighbours house, it destroyed their TV and our house phones

Pamela Theresa chances are you will never be struck by lightning, but it is a good idea to take shelter during a thunderstorm

Actually, you're so "normal", and if you weren't a bit scared of lightning, it could mean the difference between a breath followed by what could be a deadly lightning bolt. Still, I love the sound of thunder, and it's the lightning and thunder that produces nitrates to nourish and fertalize our plants and trees.
