It's no big deal... but taping starting at the bottom and working your way higher is best and usually no extra work. It treats the tape layers like shingles to let the water run down without getting behind the tape. Great video, loved watching it even though i don't have any plans to do my own siding, I am considering it on my house when the time comes. You made it look easy, and I really appreciate that.

Jeff, I really like watching your video, very straightforward and informational. One thing I would recommend is that your camera person comes closer when you are showing details. Many times it seems like they are standing back too far.

“A select few of names” Gotta say, you two seem like you’re growing closer every video. I never knew, getting my stepfathers childhood stories and lessons would help me be closer. I love the work! I’ll be making a simple one door and one window man cave this summer.

I've been watching your videos for a while and I've learned a lot over the years. I finished my parents 800sqft basement mostly on my own thanks to your videos. One thing I love about a lot of the videos is the fact that you have Matty there learning as you go. I'm similar to him in a lot of ways. We've both got a pretty good mechanical aptitude/general intuition and are "handy" but we don't have the institutional knowledge and wisdom like Jeff. For example, we know how to properly swing a hammer or run a miter saw, and we can figure stuff out on the fly, but we don't know how much gap to leave on trim, or how to perfectly shim an exterior door. It's cool to see him learning the same things I'm learning as the projects progress.

When taping windows and doors the correct way is to start taping from the bottom up. That way you are over lapping but not leaving any creases in the over lap that could leak. This way the sides will over lap the bottom and the top will over lap the sides. I hope I am not confusing anyone.

I tape across bottom then sides then top to overlap the tape from top down. Im jist saying it because you ate so good at what you do and I know would agree. Excellent video as usual. Thanks

It's tape, I don't think it matters. Also, I don't think the bottom should be taped so water has an escape IN CASE it gets in the window frame.

I don't have a house or land for any of this. It's just good practice for me to always think ahead which helps with developing better problem solving skills.

Take a shot at doing 45 degree corner cuts, less tape and excess material makes it look less DIY on a budget.

A couple suggestions: 1) Use 1x6 and 1x8 composite or pvc soffit facia boards and pre-paint them, looks much cleaner than wood covered with wrinkled aluminum and much faster to put up, 2) Don't lean your ladder on the edges of the shingles, it breaks them down and makes them look wavy. 3) "Aspenite" seems to be a long discontinued brand name of waferboard that has been replaced in the industry by much stronger OSB. 4) Looks to me like your longest siding is 12', not 16', if it was 16' there wouldn't have to be any laps on the back wall. If you can buy the siding by the piece you can minimize the lap joints as well as the waste. 4) I use a cheap hand punch to make nail slots along the ripped edge of the top siding piece, never use that type of top strip, it's all behind the facia and doesn't show. Can also use a trim router with a fence attachment and a 3/16 end cutting bit to cut a few slots very quickly. 5) I personally use a 4' level to push up and lock in each siding piece and check every course for straightness and level as I go. It's too easy to stretch the height and get off level in just a couple pieces, especially with the lighter weight products as they are more flexible. The lower grade stuff lasts just as long and looks as good but you have to pay a little more attention to detail when installing.

@@Sam-vd1ce In the video Jeff says he's going to put up a full 16 ft piece of siding, but then grabs a 12 ft piece. I think there is a lap joint in every course on the back wall. Therefore no 16 ft siding pieces. I like Jeff and watch many of his vids but don't always catch every word rambled on about. My comments were relevant to what I saw.

That "compression channel" is called a utility strip in my area. We use a tool that presses out a flap about 3/8" below the cut edge of the siding. When you slip the siding in the utility strip, it will click and lock. For the more visible areas, the utility strip hides inside a piece of J-channel.

I think you need Tyvek drainwrap followed by thin fanfold insulation and get shingle style by up from Alside with thicker thickness and to prevent horizontal wind driven rain, get white color because it lasts longest

Western Canada the Gentek Sequoia is the thicker higher quality siding and it takes a metal starter strip. It will not physically fit in the vinyl starter as it doesn't bump out far enough so to see you do this is very interesting

I'm interested in the pvc trim over the jchannel around the door. Is it possible to also use that trick for around windows for a better looking finish?

I would never be able to build something without sheathing because I guarantee one of my a-hole pets would put a hole in the house wrap. LOL. Hell, I'd probably trip and fall through it. Ah, I always wondered how the siding got started. I wish I'd paid attention when we had our siding re-done. I have terrible hand-eye coordination and my aim is awful. So I suck at landing on the nails with a hammer. LOL. I like your two-hand technique. That's a nice little window. I'm thinking of re-building the shed that houses my cistern, well, and pumps and was thinking a window might be nice to get some natural light in. Of course, I would put sheathing on it and insulate it to keep the water lines from freezing. You're so good at cutting straight lines without a guide. I have a hard time cutting straight lines even with a guide. LOL. I love seeing you work with your son. I miss doing projects with my dad, although we weren't such a well-oiled machine. More like 2 stooges. He'd pick up a board and turn with it and accidentally thwack me in the head. There was the time he stacked sheets of plywood and leaned them up against me, wanting me to hold them up and they knocked me over. Although we did good when we put up over 1k ft fencing together. And you call him Matty and nice things.

Good man. I also hang siding above the door and windows first and then hang a story pole from that . This works great at roof lines that start at a very small piece and keep getting larger . We would probably use a story pole all the way around the building before the corner and window trims were applied .That way you can snap some chalk lines and keep it straight

How is this vinyl holding up in strong winds? I live in Norway, and there was some hoses in the 90s that had it. But then we got a hurricane ( 45-65 m/s) and then they wasn`t on the hose anymore. I havn`t seen them anymore in Norway since.

Hey Jeff, why is your vent sticking out so much on the side or the trim just way too depressed into the wall? Was it properly secured or just wasn't documented in the video?

Jeff, love the channel. This summer I'm going to reside my house.i plan on using vinyl siding butI love the detail of trim used by the James Hardy or LP smart side. I'm not a fan of j channel for vinyl. My thought was to use 2 in ferring strips along the corners, windows, doors and soffit run the siding up to it then attach 3 in stained cedar trim to the ferring strips making my own j-channel. I'm in Pennsylvania. Do you see any downside to incorporating this trim detail? Thanks

The extra work my friend. Nothing structurally should be a problem. I can't tell you how many times I've thought "well that would look better if I just made x,y,z" and it was true. It just took a long time. In your case, it may be worth it. Totally your call.,Good luck!

When you were talking about thousands upon thousands of homes in the US not having sheathing, just a 1 inch foam insulation then house wrap and siding.... My house is one of those. I was shocked when installing a vent for the range hood in my kitchen and I cut a hole in the house to vent to the exterior, and there was no plywood sheathing, only the foam board you were talking about. I feel like that contributes a lot to the issues I have with keeping the house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I don't like it at all.

Why didn't you use plywood on the front and sides? Cost? Looks like just the back has plywood.

Keep it up Jeff and team. you might have convinced my wife that I get to build one some day. Also, ignore the haters in the comments.

Why no sheathing? The structure has very little racking strength. Does this area get 0 winds year round? Did you install rafter ties at least?

Is it okay if i put the siding on my shed straight on the frame without putting typar on the frame?

I noticed that as you stated to eliminate seeing seems to go from back to front. But on the front side you went front to back why was that?

The only part i was watching for was what you used over the J trim on the door and that part didn't make it in the video 😂 i need to know because i want to cover that up on our doors/windows because ours look like poo hahaa

Why do you need to ensure that there is wiggle room when installing J channel but then the whole window J channel gets tucked taped ? Do you only tape around windows and not the doors ?

I knew the second I saw that piece for over the door it was cut wrong lol but hey, even the best of us will make a mistake or 2. A GOOD & REPUTABLE journeyman/contractor stops & fixes it BEFORE moving on.

Wait for all this pieces without a nailing surface you can’t make one with a punch. Also if you must use a utility strip like under a window get the 15$ tool that punches little tabs and that will lock the siding up in there we had 75 mph winds I didn’t loss any siding

Dont seat the nails all the way and nail in the center of the cutout. Lets it move in and outand side to side

If the studding is really bad, you may also need to use a string line and shim the low points, but that's rarely necessary.

When you buy a new house you kind of fall into a trap of believing everything is brand new and top quality. But I see more and more every year how the builder just uses the cheapest crap so that it looks good to the excited new home buyer but doesn’t hold up. Every house in our new build development has vinyl siding that turned wavy within a year. Some even before they were sold, totally warped. Nobody really complained except for me; it’s like why does my new house look 20 years old. We were told it’s normal as there isn’t really any trees to block the sun, but I believe it’s a mix of the installers nailing them too tight and the lowest grade cheapest material the builders could find.

Unless the house is already built, the buyer should have choices regarding materials and fixtures ect. These are upgrades and not likely spent on the siding around the back sides of the house. If there’s no sheathing and it’s a house then that’s F’ed up!! I have seen foil cardboard in the gables of cheap volume builders. And the houses so close together that the sunlight reflects off the windows and warps the neighbors siding.

It’s because they hire anyone they can and no one supervises them. They nail too tight and cut short and all kinds of things they really don’t do much correct. Your yards are usually feet up unconnected fill and top soil so all the utilities settle and like to pull off the house. I just like the ones where they don’t cut the curbs so you have a speed bump to pull in or they put the sidewalks close to the road so you scrap you car as you pull in. Best thing to do is check out another development they own. See if all the driveways are a mess and maybe talk to someone. Those 12 valley roofs will be fun to reroof too. It’s all going to be a mess shortly

I would have used a sheet of Exterra, exterior grade mdf ripped to size if its going to be covered in flashing. $25 pine is wasted money.

Also, after doing it for a living, drill small holes and where you got your metal they should have painted nails instead of screws which can ruin the metal

So question is the lack of sheathing not a structural concern?

I have diagonal framing to adapt for stability. 1 2x4 is $5 vs 2 sheets of osb for $100.

Actually it's a good thing because that stuff is eventually going to end up in a landfill. It may be the cheapest possible thing you can sheath an structure with but we have to think about sustainability. I'm kind of surprised that Canada hasn't done that with all the greenies that you have up there. Plus the insects. And drafts. A million ways in with that stuff. @@HomeRenoVisionDIY

@@TheKingOfInappropriateComments - vinyl siding can be recycled and there should be no need for it to be sent to landfill. Google recycling vinyl siding North America and you'll see there's plenty of info on recycling. It's a good point to make, though, especially with the micro-plastics in the environment already. Vinyl siding isn't used that much in NZ, largely because it has to be made to order in Canada / USA and shipped as a house-lot. So we use wood, brick and fiber cement board instead, because if a repair is needed, it's a quick trip to the hardware store.

As far as the overlap goes, couldn't you just use PVC cement to lock the overlapping pieces together for a nicer look?

im a big proponent of "safety squints" but for the love of god please use some type of eye protection when using a grinder. if the blade fails, etc even tho you're only cutting into vinyl. I was cutting hardy board (cement board siding) even WITH glasses and a piece of dust/particulate got into my eye and cost my boss a couple hundred dollars and a world of pain for me going to the eye doctor immediately after flushing my eyes out didnt do anything. it was like sex when the numbed my eye up once i got there after being in extreme pain for an hour or two. It was the first time i had to call my boss on the phone and say "i'm fucked" i HAVE to go to a doctor. like....NOW.

I used to think "eh as long as I'm not an idiot with the tool, i should be fine for small stuff" until I saw pictures of cut off wheel accidents..... I don't go near them if I can help it and if I can't, then I wear a face shield. I'd rather look like a dork for 5 minutes than lose an eye for the rest of my life (or worse). Most tools I rarely wear ear/eye pro for, aside from stuff like table saws and routers....but cutoff wheels.... yeah that's a big nope from me unless I've got a shield.

You should be trying to sell that church to a non-profit to be used as a career center or something like that.

@@smiles36njcp Just means you're spending a lot more money on heating/cooling costs. The insulation is meant to help you keep the house at whatever temperature you want. You can have insulation put in existing walls for a few grand, cut holes at the top, fill between the studs then repair the holes.

@@AceEverett I didn't google it yet but I was thinking possible condensation problems or mold between walls where cold air meets warmer sheetrock. Thank you for the suggestion about adding spray in insulation.

@@smiles36njcp Condensation would signal your exterior walls (and maybe foundation) need help. Definitely are at higher risk with no insulation though.
