Vinyl Plank or Laminate Flooring - What's The Difference, Which Is Better?

Ойын-сауық

NEW I've just opened a merch shop! If there's anything you'd like to see there in addition to the currently limited lineup, drop a comment on my latest video and let me know! shop.spreadshirt.com/cynicalm... I install flooring for a living. And before that, I sold flooring for years. While my knowledge is not the most extensive, I do like to keep things simple for you. I'm going to basically give you the same presentation here that I would give customers when selling them flooring. I will provide you the simple main differences between vinyl plank and laminate flooring, installation-wise and customer-who-must-live-with-this-flooring-under-their-feet-wise.
We'll do a key scratch test, talk about water resistance/waterproof, how to cut these floors, and what the difference is on imperfect subfloor installs.

Absolute best review of laminate vs lvp of all the you tube videos I have looked at. One thing you cover that the other seem to overlook is the flexibility of the lvp. I have a little bit of a wave in the floor. That info was really important to me.

There is a guillotine cutter that replaces the saw for straight cuts on laminate. Huge timesaver.

I put pergo wood laminate in all my bathrooms and kitchen with kids and dogs 15 years no problem with buckling, etc. when I installed it in the wet areas, I also put waterproof wood glue in the tongue & groove joints which I think did the trick. Have you ever tried this?

I had a water leak from the sink that damaged the sub floor. I have a rug over that area. Some day I want to put a black and white square patterned floor in the kitchen. So I guess the vinyl plank would be best? Do you install in SC? 😁

Well, someday I just might install in SC. 😀 -- as far as that checkerboard pattern goes, yessss! I love that. And you can get it several different ways too. Something as cheap and easy as sheet vinyl, all the way to actual real tile. I want to do it in our kitchen.

Hey I have been looking everywhere for that type of laminate flooring. Glad to know its not the best for animals. Can you (or anyone) tell me the name of that laminate flooring patern/color/look? Can you (or anyone) tell me if there is plank flooring that looks close to that laminate flooring? Any guidance would be awsome.

The laminate in this video is Style Selections Natural Acacia from Lowe's. I don't know of any vinyl plank that looks just like it, but there's some brands with way bigger selections than others. COREtec is probably the biggest non-mainstream brand that is coming into the light after merging with/aquiring Smartcore.

I'm thinking about buying some lvp from a wholesaler. I want to make sure that I'm getting actually what I'm asking for so is there a way to tell by the feel of a board or the look between laminate and LVP? I'm also going to ask him if you can give me the name of the code and if I could find them online so I can get information verify information

There are big differences that make it easy to tell. Laminate is thicker, stiffer, doesn't really bend. Vinyl plank (lvp) is going to have a ton of flexibility and be thinner. Most lvp, aside from the really heavy duty stuff, will bend so easily that you can turn it into a C shape or circle bending it. You'd never do that with laminate.

@@cynicalmikey8769 well the I'm thinking about going with at 6-6.5 mm Lvp. Will it still be noticably flexible?

@@cynicalmikey8769 well I have some pieces some samples of lvp and I guess they're not flexible flexible because it's only maybe about 6 to 8 in so I guess if it was a whole lot longer you know one I guess if it was one actual plank it would be flexible but that sample isn't

Laminate. And it creaks and pops and it's ready to go. I'll never do laminate again. I only bought it because it was a special order return, 75% off!
