Vinyl Liner Pools vs Fiberglass Pools: An Honest Comparison

Is a fiberglass or vinyl liner pool better for me?
Vinyl liner pools typically cost about $10,000 less than fiberglass pools upfront. However, they need the liner replaced every 5-9 years and tend to look cheap. Fiberglass pools are much more durable, need less maintenance, and look classy.

I have been installing Vinyl Liner Pools for 20+ years. It does NOT take anywhere near 4 to 8 weeks to install one. I have installed them start to finish in 3 DAYS with the average time being about 6 to 7 days. If it takes you 4 to 8 WEEKS you need to hire a new crew! Fiberglass pools can get algae just as easily as a vinyl liner pool and they also fade, chip, and crack over time and it is a hell of a lot more expensive to reset, paint, or patch a fiberglass pool than to swap out a $3500 vinyl liners 20 years down the road. Up here in New England I have seen many fiberglass pool pop out of the ground on one side or the whole thing with the frost in the winter and I have also heard of them popping out of the ground down south from ground water pressure. Guess how much that will cost you to reset?! I also have not come across a fiberglass pool that is more than 6 feet deep which rules out having any type of diving board. I would go with a gunite before a fiberglass pool any day but overall galvanized steel vinyl liner pools last longer than any pool out there on the market. I have worked on all of them and renovated some old pools 50 to 60+ years old and galvanized steel definitely by far holds up the best. It starts looking old or warn you just change the liner and it is brand new again!

Morning Andrew. A 3 day in ground vinyl liner install is certainly brag worthy! And a 6-7 day average for your crew is brag worthy as well. As you are speaking from your experiences we are speaking from ours. We've been building pools as a company for 17 years and over that time we've installed both vinyl liner above and in ground as well as fiberglass above and in ground. What we have found is that there are pros and cons for choosing each pool type, and compared to fiberglass pools, vinyl liner pools have always taken longer to install. By the way, we once installed a fiberglass pool (start to finish) with concrete decking and all (even got the filter up and running) in 8 hrs 15 mins...Here's a link to a video 👉kzread.info/dash/bejne/p6iI0paPhLDJm5s.html A little bit about us a company...we believe in sharing what we've learned over the years with the consumer to help them choose the best pool for their backyard...even if that means NOT choosing a fiberglass pool. As for the quality and durability of a fiberglass pool, manufacturing practices, materials and technologies have advanced quite a bit over the years, and the problems once connected with them are no more. If a fiberglass pool cracks, chips, fades...well, it simply wasn't properly made or with the best materials available, which is why we encourage folks to pay particular attention to manufacturing practices and THEN review the warranty offered by the manufacturer (it really indicates how much they stand behind their work). And yes, you would be correct that fiberglass pools can pop out of the ground due to groundwater. But so can concrete pools, and heck...ground water can even have a negative effect on vinyl liner pools if it's not properly managed. We would venture to say that of the pools you have seen "pop" and those you have heard of down south "popping", those pools were not installed properly, or they were improperly drained (which no one should ever do without first consulting with a pool professional). As for deep ends, I could direct you to several fiberglass pools brands in the industry with deep ends. One in particular has an 8.5' deep end (link 👉 www.riverpoolsandspas.com/funtime-fiberglass-pool ). We've visited your site, and it looks like you've done some amazing jobs. Nice work! We commend you for paying attention to the details and leaving your customers with a smile on their face when the job is complete. At the end of the day...If the homeowner is happy, that makes us pool guys and gals happy, right?! There's nothing better than seeing a family enjoy the backyard of their dreams. Here's to many, many more happy homeowners jumping into their pools for the first time!!!! 🌊🇺🇸

I am the owner of a Vinyl Liner pool for over 20 years. I am on my 3rd liner though they didn't cost 4000 more like 2500 installed. That does not include the cost of replacing the water which my pool holds 25,000 gallons. I would never buy a liner pool if I knew a few things before hand like when you have a big rain and the ground gets saturated the liner will bulge out with water behind the liner, the pool is designed to let that water in. You cannot suck the water out behind the liner very fast or you will create wrinkles. It has to be slowly don't taking some times two days. They don't mention that and I don't blame them. LOL

  • @andrewvining9873

If you have water behind the liner whoever installed it failed to put the proper drainage in around the pool Also if you had a fiberglass pool with that kind of water problem the pool would pop out of the ground from the water pressure because the water has nowhere to go. you should only go through a liner every 17 to 20 years if you have a liner from a decent manufacturer. Have someone who knows what they are doing come in and put drainage around your pool to solve your floating problem.

Andrew Vining worth mentioning, even with properly designed drainage, if the pool owner allows the pool to fill up high enough for water to reach the coping, that can cause the liner to bulge. Not sure what his cause is, but that is common during a big rain when people aren't watching their water level.

I am just starting my research to learn about various types of pools to put one in my own backyard. (I must commend this company River Pools that's doing tremendous public service by educating new consumers like myself about various types and materials of pools. So even if I may not become their direct customer, their good karma act is not going to a waste. I have many friends and family members along the eastern seaboard where the bulk of their business seems to be. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone how far - and how fast - a word of mouth can spread these days. Especially via social media! ;) In any case, my interest to ask you directly is so, because, I know Saudi Arabia is a very hot area and I happen to be also in an area which, too, gets very hot and dry in the summer with average temperatures crossing 40+ Celsius degrees for many days in a row with not a single drop of rain! (Parts of winter can be to the other extreme; some nights dip below zero making high risk for pools not built to handle freezing frost) So, please list all your thoughts and experience about fiberglass pools vs other types of pools for long-term durability, cost/maintenance, and various/extreme weathers. Thank you!

Our pools can certainly withstand the winter...we've seen ours become ice skating rinks before LOL. And, as for draining...only fiberglass pool pros should drain the pool. If not properly braced there certainly can be significant issues.

I stopped watching after he said 4 to 8 weeks build time for vinyl pools, after working in the industry for 20 years, installing both vinyl and fiberglass I know that is the biggest load of nonsense and couldn't be further from the truth, I don't know of a pool company in our area that takes more than a week to install the structure of a vinyl liner swimming pool, then depending on the patio and landscaping surrounding the pool is where the majority of the duration of the project takes place, regardless of the pool being fiberglass or vinyl. If you live down south and don't care about customization, go Fiberglass. If you live up North, go vinyl. The other comment below called them out too on their 4-8 week claim.

We played this back and YOU'RE RIGHT! We presented that bit of info as if comparing apples and oranges. The bulk of installation time for ALL pool installations is usually in the finishes. Albeit a fiberglass pool can go in the ground much faster than a vinyl liner pool, in as little as one day in fact. However there are legitimate reasons why folks would choose a vinyl over a fiberglass pool. And at the end of the day, a smile on a customer's face as they canonball into their very own pool for the first time, is the moment WE ALL want, Right?! No matter what type of pool it is. Again, thanks for watching. Thanks for weighing in.
