Vintage soldering guns teardown & repair

Ғылым және технология

Today, let's fix a broken 1986 soldering gun and let's see what's inside an even older one, probably from the 1960s or 1970s.

I soldered tiny SMD transistors with this one in this video :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/l5yk2ch8hbfHY7A.html It's even possible to solder chips (let's say 16 pins) with this. You just flood it in rosin and solder 8 pins at once. Because of the rosin, the solder doesn't go between the pins.

I'm using it for at least 25 years and I don't remember it damaging anything... ESD from your fingers is more dangerous for the components. Few times I damaged LEDs by ESD discharge when touching them, but it was such a strong ESD I could feel the zap.

8:13 I think the switch isn't made of copper, it would be too soft, probably bronze. Maybe even made of beryllium bronze, that would be the best material for it, but also the most expensive. As always, a great video! I like the old soldering gun and its color too.

Your Grandfather's iron could not have been that doggy as he was still your Grandfather when you were born... :-) Love old soldering irons. The bakeolite one is so simple in it's smart design. I have a old Weller bakelite pistol grip soldering iron like you have. I used mine in High School in shop class in 1970. It is marked as 1968 and is still working today. The one I have was dropped one day and had the back broke off in several large pieces. I was in class that day and found all the pieces. The shop teacher said to toss it in the trash. I asked if I could have it, he said yes. I brought it home and used rubber glue to glue it back together and I'm using it to this day. The rubber glue started to fail last year so I took it all apart and used 2 part epoxy to glue it back together once more... Lol You are right on the continuous use. If your at 220v gets as hot as mine does at 110v I understand the need for several... Lol I use my Weller for the big jobs that require lots of heat because of the ground plane. I use the smaller handheld soldering tip irons mostly, but when I need Heat, I grab Bertha, she has never let me down... Lol Thanks for the video!

I found a soldering gun among my grandfather's things as well some years ago. It was a bit different though. It had a UU core and I think 7 turns on the secondary or so (on the opposite leg of the transformer, so lower coupling). The switch often got stuck, but more importantly, the hot end was a fixed piece that didnt heat up properly anymore, and the transformer was also rattling as if it is completely broken. But I later figured out that the secondary was kind-of broken where it connected to the hot end with a nut. It's hard to describe and a bit weird. It also had a lamp that ran directly from mains, not in a socket, and it was also broken when I tried it. Your units seem to be way better quality btw.

@@riley5114 Sure it is. Those soldering guns (especially orange one) are legendary in Czech Republic, they are super reliable. I have the orange one which was given me in 1988 when I was 11 yo boy, I'm using it almost every day to THIS DAY and it's still working like new. If you take good care of it, it will serve you your whole life (no kidding). There are only 3 things inside which can break - small indicator 6.3V lightbulb, switch and 230V mains cord. All of those parts are cheap and are easily replaceable. Those soldering guns are still made by the same company (NUBA) which made older units you see in the video, if you want to buy it, just search for NUBA ETP.

Good old Czechoslovakian TRP2-73 soldering gun (Transformátorová Páječka)... We have a ivory coloured one which have bought in the early '80s, it was very common in Hungary in those times. I saw it in black, red, green and yellow colours. It can be purchased brand new nowadays in a more streamlined body. However, it's a very sturdy workhorse, if the copper wire tip is broken, just twist it a little, and continue soldering... :D

Basic design but reliable, as long as you keep the element connections really clean and tight. I had a 100 watt one badged by hilka, very bulky and the same bulb on the front. I had it for years but i didn't need it very often, radio repairs don't need massive heat. Gave it away to a frend, he was happy with it :-D

The OBZOR switch at 6:19 is very nice and intetesting inside. It is easy to open. There is metal strip inside that bends when you press the button and is acts as a spring. It stays engaged until fully releasing the button. It seems to me that there are also small magnets at the tip of the metal strip. I thnik the strip is only copper coated or some alloy. Copper itself would break after bending back and forth so many times.

I miss my dad's old Weller soldering gun. It was a dual temperature 120vac. The push button switch had three distinct positions depending on how hard you pressed the trigger (off/hi/low). The primary had a tap on it. I don't remember the voltage of the lamp, but it was probably 6v. The lamp was connected between the taps. The switch selected full windings or the tap, so in one setting the lamp voltage was a step down autotransformer and the other setting was a step up autotransformer, with the difference being the voltage for the lamp. The secondary was a single turn of copper that was formed to take a copper tip. Unfortunately it was made of good old Bakelite that had cracked too many times and I could never find the right glue that worked. It eventually became just the guts and Bakelite powder and was thrown out. I have the modern version of a similar Weller. Too bad they used new plastic (melts really easily and the guts started wobbling about, plus it still cracked) and the secondary was made of aluminum that the set screws stripped out. The aluminum secondary was replaced with some decent thick copper wire (I plan on making a better and thicker copper one) and the broken plastic (about 50% lost) was "artistically" hand crafted from two part epoxy.

I have a 70VA one from my grandfather, the switch is made up by two metal plates like your black one. I don't think that's for making it cheaper because it's quite a luxury model(it can run for about 1 hour of continuos soldering without overheating too much). I don't use it because it's a true 70Va transformer so it's quite eavy :)

the black soldering iron is made of bakelite, the first plastic substance discovered. It can be recognized by the brown shading that exists where the bakelite has been repeatedly swiped, such as between the lamp and the white trigger. The section of the secondary power is 30.42 square millimeters! The last transformer soldering iron I bought was a Parkside (or maybe I should say Porkside): I swear I threw it away in desperation: the tin didn't stick to the tip!

The copper strip switch actually seems to not be that bad, the way it contacts it scrapes the oxidation when you press it, so it could potentially be a pretty reliable switch, maybe won't work perfectly the first time after it's been sitting for a while, but a few presses and it should work well again

The switch strips are not made of copper but of electrotechnical brass as it's called in Bulgaria - same material as in mains sockets and switches. Copper woul'd not be "springy" enough as new and as it heats and cools while working it woul'd become hard and fragile, because copper hardens when heated (if you've encountered condition of obused for many dacades old pre-60s home wiring with relatively thin wires in rubber-like plus textile insulation you may have noticed how frigile copper conductors had became).

Dobrý den. Proč to děláš v angličtině? Vždyť pistolové pájky používáme mi slováci a možná poláci.
