YES. This is great. No one will ever talk about how much you should pay for vintage, even though it's a fairly important topic for new collectors. I get that we've all been told that it's embarrassing to talk about money, and that this shame includes how much you paid for something, but it can't be that unreasonable to talk in general terms about what average prices are. Also, this eyeshadow look in this video is super cool.

It shouldn't like to see vintage items go to waste! I do like to acknowledge it is an intense and complex topic, but I buy modern leather things, so naturally I have no trouble buying vintage ones, but that's just me!

I started thrift store store shopping in 1978/79 and would pay maybe $5 (or less) for a 50's dress with matching bolero. No one wanted this style of clothing and there was a glut of these items. I was influenced by old Hollywood movies. Bette Davis, Rosalind Russel, Veronica Lake & on and on. Influenced? I should say obsessed. It was a learning experience. I ruined some items by trying to hand wash them, especially silk, rather than dry clean them. I am always happy to meet a fellow vintage collector. ( BTW You look so nice in this video). My kids think I am a hoarder... I disagree. 😉

@@TheClosetHistorian One day I will start letting things go. There is no way I'll ever be able to fit back into most of them. I was 48 kilos as a young woman, quite tiny. A lot of shoes got tossed out either through wearing them to death or not being stored properly. So, yeah, I will advertise for top dollar or the average going price when the time comes. I would be silly not to, right ?

Oh wow, I bet you have an amazing collection! I started collecting before there was even eBay. So lucky I was able to experience finding those treasures. Can't imagine it will ever be like that again. I'd loved to have been back in the 70's collecting too!

Interesting. I am an Etsy seller and I sell dresses from the 1950s for $50-$75 that are in wearable, good condition. I do think physical stores are more expensive, but I think you can find dresses on Etsy and Ebay

I certainly think there are great pieces for under $100 out there, especially when it comes to 50's things, and in general I have paid around $75 for 50's dresses before. There are always bargains to be found, and sales, and just very fair sellers like yourself who list things at a reasonable amount as opposed to marking things up just because they can. I think too that my size does bias my in-brain price range for dresses, as dresses in my size are often labeled and considered large or x large (41" 30" 44" ish) in the vintage market and since they can be a bit rarer than say size small dresses, they are often priced higher. Or at least that has been my experience and observation over the years of shopping. I would expect to have to pay $125+ for a 1940's rayon dress in my size and in good condition, I would expect a slightly more easily found 1950's button front style dress in a cotton or nylon to be around $75 perhaps. So of course it always depends on the individual dress in question and the seller, but it sounds to me like you are very fair with pricing your items which is always nice to hear!

I agree. I also sell vintage dresses often for similar price as a high street dress. I never list "as is", I always list every flaw no matter how small. My experiences as a buyer have influenced how I list as a seller.

I am a xs and I can often snag beautiful mint condition items because so few people that would like to buy it are looking for that size and it has been marked down for this reason

This is an advantage for sure! So much pretty vintage at smaller sizes, I am a bit jealous but also happy for you! I still love looking at pieces that wouldn't fit me for reference for sewing, so I consider all vintage clothing on offer as a gallery where occasionally I can snag a piece for myself :) This is how I ended up with my Lilli Ann suit in fact, as I clicked on the listing just to admire the suit, thinking that it must certainly be an x small as so many surviving ones are, but when I saw my measurements I just lost all sane judgement and now it's in my closet!

Everytime I watch these type of videos of yours it always makes me wanna go straight to Etsy and shop! I wanna look for a cute velvet-y 50’s hat and a small versatile hang bag. Also loved the video Bianca, totally agree with all that you said! All of my vintage clothes are each under $40. And it’s some times pretty fun finding the great things for decent prices. Although I would like to get those fun and pricey items I just look away before I cry and keep looking for those deals haha. 😆👌🏻

Ah this is a great vid! And it's great that you offer your help if people wonder if a vintage item is overpriced. Personally my budget for dresses is usually to about 110 euro's, I currently don't have a lot to spend. But I also worry that a fragile item will be damaged by me or by wearing it. Also it's even more special to find that item you were searching for, for 2 months, at a good price. Feels like a real treasure you found.

Thank you! I love the thrill of finally finding a great deal on something you've been searching for for a while, it is certainly more satisfying! I too worry about the fragility of some items, and when something is on the edge of too fragile to wear I wish it would end up in a museum collection where it could be cared for and serve as a resource instead of dissolving away to dust in someones laundry hamper. Luckily most vintage lovers know when to stop wearing something I think, at least it seems that way.

I'm never sure whether to buy one thing cause I don't know if it's a good deal so this is super helpful for the guidelines To add my two cents to the leather/pleather debate, I guess I'm happy to use leather, new or vintage just cause it's a natural product and will usually last longer (if you look after it) and I think some vegans forget that their alternatives are still plastic

But it makes me smile, so what the heck. Ohh I love reptile skin bags. They are so elegant and classy! I bought a brown crocodile purse for $50. I get compliments every time I carry it. I bought a beige snakeskin clutch from Goodwill for $1 a few years ago also a burgundy eel skin purse and matching wallet for $6.98 (total) also from Goodwill. I like old handbags (clothing items in general) not necessarily vintage, but I really enjoy your channel.

My best bargain was an '80's does 40's' suit I won on eBay for £1! Needed a tiny repair on the back of the skirt. It's linen too! :D Love your hair and make up in this video - you look amazing x

You've reminded me of a bracelet I love from the film Double Indemnity. "Phyllis" is wearing it when "Walter" first visits her at home. I found something in a similar kind of style. I love your makeup look in this video. I'm very careful when thrift shopping, I check every single detail. Sadly I cannot afford to spend $100 to $150 on a vintage dress so I look for bargains or try to make modern pieces look vintage. I don't stick to the style 100% of the time but I do love it.

The trouble with my super familiarity with Etsy is when I'm out and about the prices always seem really high because I know what things go for online!

I have bought 1950s Mexican hand painted circle skirts that are a wrap style and have them fitted to me. I always know I can make it fit. I used to be 24 inch waist and can’t at all fit in those sizes so I find easy to alter items.

So what you were saying about the hunting and putting things Together in time, well today I send it out in the universe to get some necklace. I wanted a black glass l-like cut faceted necklace and I found one at thrift $5! And

I bought a beautiful handmade(home sewn) winter suit at our antiques store for 90.00. The lining is sewn in by hand. I was wondering if I paid too much. That was 50% off. I love wearing it. It seems that is a good price. Thank you, this is very helpful.

It sounds to me like you found a great piece at a great price! I love suits, and to me $90 for a vintage suit is a great deal. The lowest I have paid for one is $75, and I felt like I was practically stealing I was getting such a great deal ;)

Thank you Lele! I don't keep an eye on Ebay but I'm sure prices go up and up over there for rare and very sought after things! I have a collection of mostly suede belts from the 1980's that I wear with my 1940's and 1950's outfits. I try and find a very specific style, suede, 1 inch wide, with a simple buckle covered in the same suede, and then I try and find that in every color! It's harder to find them than you would think! I don't usually make belts as I find it fiddly, though it is definitely more accurate to have belts that match the dress from the same fabric.

Converting your figures to Australian dollars, I think that your suggested prices are not dissimilar to what I expect to pay in a retail store here. Unfortunately I think that in Australia we just have less access to vintage clothing/less choice in general, compared with the US and UK. I would really struggle to find a 40s or 50s suit here, at any price. However, I have been extremely lucky and and a couple of times I have come across near mint condition 40s dresses in charity shops for about USD $50. Vintage costume jewelry is also still pretty well priced here in charity shops. Some of my best buys have been from eBay- cute, basic black 50s dresses for about USD $25 that I have worn to death. Like you, these days I’m just as, if not, more focused on making my own clothing to vintage patterns. It’s so satisfying creatively and of course I can get a perfect fit 🙂

I have heard that vintage shopping in Australia is a different deal, and I could imagine the prices reflect that! I do 98% of my vintage shopping online, so I guess I am less familiar with what is being charged in physical stores as well. I don't leave the house much if I can help it, I'm a homebody ;)

I have worn vintage I have found that the dresses were "SO" well made. I felt like a million bucks in them. But I have to say I have bought velvet jackets that after a few months just didn't hold up so they became wall art!

Vintage in general tends to be of amazing quality, and especially when contrasted with modern clothing which can be terrible! I have 40's suits that feel brand new, but have also bought a 40's dress that, while lovely, had all the seams split open the first time I tried it on because the thread had rotted (I just sewed all the seams back together of course) so it really can be the luck of the draw when buying online!

I am a large size person who always struggle finding vintage pieces that can fit me 😂 And 1950s clothings just have tiny waist sizes

I know this struggle! My size (30" waist) does seem harder to find, the 26" waisted girls out there are the lucky ones when it comes to vintage shopping! I feel like anything larger is priced higher since it is rarer too.

What is the range for dress clips? I have been looking at quite a few, but I really want the set of two so it seems to be fairly expensive for a good pair (not missing half the stones or the backs or whatever)

For nice "evening" clear rhinestone clips with all stones intact they seem to go for around $40-$75 (and up of course) for a matching set in perfect condition. They will pop up for less now and again so it is possible to score a pair for 25$ if you search on just the right day and can scoop them up before someone else. For signed Coro or Trifari duette clips they can go for $150+ easily. For more day wear -ish ones, perhaps with colorful stones, enamel, plastic stones or pearls, or just base metal of some kind the range is more around 15-55 perhaps for a matching set. I have seen individual clips for anywhere from $10-$60 perhaps, depending on the style. More 30's things tend to go for more as they are rarer. I have paid anywhere from $15 to $40 for sets, and most of mine I got for around $30. I would say these are the fair market prices for dress clips, but that doesn't mean you cant score deals, and my biggest tip for doing so is just to search often and sort by "most recent", so that when a pair for a steal does pop up, you catch them!

that's crazy, here in Europe you can get 60s-70s clothing for 20 euros the suit or the dress. 40s clothing is a little bit more expensive but never as much as 200 dollars :). I guess we are lucky ^^'

Wool skirts? pleated or not, I have a few, one is reversible. And how can I launder them (and avoid drycleaning at $15 per skirt) would brushing and hanging them out side be enough?

Hmm, for pleated wool skirts (which are what I buy mostly) I usually pay around $25-$30 dollars on Etsy, and I have scored a few out thrifting for much less, around $7-$10 -ish. The real 1950's and 1960's ones, especially those reversible ones, do tend to go for much more, but I have no problem buying ones from the 1980's since they styles are so similar. I usually follow the washing directions for any vintage because I'm just not a gambler, so if something says dry clean, I'll just do it to be safe. For wool skirts though I have never gotten them "dirty" after that initial dry clean really. Because I wear them over slips and don't sit on dusty benches or anything, I only worry about getting them cleaned the once, which seems to work for me.

Thanks for replying. I have a wonderful second hand shop here, they have a 2 for 1 day every Monday and I can get 2 skirts for about $6.00. I've not found any 40s dresses yet, they'd be 2 for $8.00. but there is loads of 70s and 80s stuff, which aren't my thing.

I think so yes! Often 1980's coats were made in very similar shapes to 1940s coats too, and are usually much less expensive, check out old catalogs for reference on silhouettes that were available www.pinterest.com/bmesposito/spiegel-fall-winter-1945-catalog/

I did it the same as I did my hair in this one kzread.info/dash/bejne/hqqE2JWchc-rYNY.html but my hair is just a bit shorter now and with that style it looks a bit different each time depending on how much my curls relaxed over night :)

This is indeed true, just as much as regular leather is, but seeing as I also wear leather shoes and am not vegetarian-- I also still buy vintage leather goods including reptile skin items. Seeing as vintage pieces were made 50+ years ago, should those pieces be just thrown away and land-filled, or should they continue to be used? It's obvious that now there is faux reptile effect pleather available that no additional animals should be harmed, but vintage items already exist and there is nothing that can be done about them now. Everyone has their own opinions on the topic of vintage leather/skins/fur pieces, and while most can agree (hopefully) that no new furs or skins should be used/made, especially now that alternatives also exist, vintage items are another more confused grey area. Should items be used even if they are no longer politically correct? In an age of so much over consumption and fast fashion, shouldn't older items be used as much as possible instead of creating new ones? It is definitely a big topic, and this video was already long, but I certainly think this is a very valid opinion and that the issue deserves discussion.
