Vintage Road Bike Components! Suntour Alpha 3000 vs Suntour Cyclone 7000 Rear Derailleur

Спорт

This was a surprising discovery comparing these two derailleurs! One is entry level, and one is the more race oriented, but did not know the difference would be so noticeable. Also, this is a perfect example of what it looks like when a chain is too short for your drivetrain! Hope you enjoy the video, learn something from it, and also assist with a potential build you may have planned!

    I ride an old fuji roadbike with similar components and have the same experience finding information. unless it's a museum piece nobody wants to talk about it. great video, thanks for the information.

    Precisely! That’s what stinks is there’s a way bigger back catalog of items that don’t have info than the typical top tier components like Dura Ace or Superb Pro but personally that’s out of my budget. And all the mid range stuff is extremely good but people don’t know since there are no reviews. Thanks for your comment and I’ll definitely be making more vids on these parts!

    With seatposts, the only true test is to fit a post. Best if you can take it to the shop and try several used ones.

    Nice bike thanks for posting some info. Recently got a Del Rey from a similar year with a cyclone 7 that I’m working on.

    I have this exact bike for about a year and was going to do some videos on the mods and experience......till I saw your channel haha. Just did the 700c conversion now that they don't make the Conti Ultra 3 in 27 x 1 1/4 anymore.

    That’s what stinks the limited tires for 27 wheels, otherwise I would have been totally fine with that wheel size! Thanks for watching!

    Was the lower pivot for the Alpha derailleur binding a bit? If so, it's not a bad idea to pull it apart and make sure it is lubed. I've been using SunTours since the 70's, and a bit of cleaning and lubing can be helpful. It's great to see the love for the SunTour parts!

    🤣 That relatable intro. The only thing worse is when you find a forum post from like 2008 with the *exact* question you have, 3-4 posts of no one knowing, and then OP dropping in a "NVM, figured it out, thanks!" and that's it 🥲

    When referencing "hearing your gears" I meant more so making sure you're not rubbing and in between gears so when you do accelerate again, you don't slip or skip in your gearing and wind up having your chain come off or worse, fall off your bike! Do any of my fellow downtube shifter users have tips you can provide that you find useful? Leave a comment!

    Wow, thanks for the warning about the fingers and the spokes! That's exactly the type of oopsie I tend to get into. I'm currently shopping for my first steel bike, but I'm heavily leaning toward STI shifters. The availability and the cult factor of the bikes is limited by that, but I'm not the best bike handler even with STI, so for my safety it's probably better.

    Oh I used to have a Cyclone back in the day around 1984. I can't tell you what series it was, but I never had a problem with it. LOL funny I changed my Panaracers for Michelin tiers as well. Getting flats was nearly eliminated after words. I looked for Michelines with my new bike about 10 years ago and couldn't find any.

    Thanks for the comment! Yea seems like Cyclone did have a few different iterations before it reached the “7000” series. I definitely have experience with panaracers too and I definitely think the Dynamic Classic tires are better.

    Thank you very much for that I appreciate it! There nothing like an old bike and it wasn’t my generation, but it’s clear as day older bikes have better quality, character, they are just works of art! I can talk about it for hours. But there will be more to come stay tuned!

    That’s really cool you have a old Fuji. I have a 1986 12spd Fuji absolute. I’ve upgraded the brakes to recessed mounted shimano 105’s w/SLR aero levers, sealed bottom bracket and it came with Suntour 7 rear derailleur that I’m looking to upgrade to the Cyclone. But still, the Suntour 7 is also very good.

    the forum arguments that result from someone asking a specific and uncontroversial question are so funny. "how do i do this thing?" "well i wouldn't do this thing because my circumstances are different than yours therefore you are an idiot. why would you want to do this thing?"

    I'm curious, why did select a 9-speed chain instead of a 8/7/6-speed one? Also, what brand chain do you find works best with Suntour Accushift if/when you use index mode? Thanks.

  • @newoldsteel

    Thanks for commenting! I’ve learned that I had an “ultra” spaced freewheel which has the cogs a lot closer together and a regular 8 speed chain wasn’t really fitting well with it. However, I have swapped this freewheel with another 6 speed “regular” spacing (Suntour as well) and the 6/7/8 speed chain works really well. With the accushift the budget kmc chain has worked very well with all my accushift builds so I recommend that. Nothing too fancy just the basic offering.

    You could drill the seat tube and fit a couple of riv-nuts. Might look nicer than those clamps for your second bottle cage? Or do you want to keep the frame original?

  • @newoldsteel

    @newoldsteel

    Жыл бұрын

    I definitely plan on keeping it original, but it’s so bizarre they didn’t include second seat tube mounts for a water bottle cage. I can’t imagine it was THAT much of savings for the company to not do it. But the Velo Orange bottle cage adapters are quite nice though so I like them on the bike. Thanks for commenting!

    Loving your channel! I'm looking to get myself a vintage road bike with the same downtube shifters. With 13-28 in the rear and 52/42 up front. How well do you think it'll perform on my local climbs?

  • @newoldsteel

    @newoldsteel

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much appreciate that! Definitely go for it! So right now even though I LOVE the 52/42 combo, it can get tad bit tough on climbs if your lowest gear is around 23-25 tooth cog. However, if you get to 28t it will definitely help with the 42 tooth smallest chainring. So you won’t have to toss out the freewheel if it does become hard to climb, a solution i recommend is finding out your crank BCD and getting a smaller chainring like a 40t or 39t, BUT you may have to research to make sure your derailleurs can handle the tooth difference. Best of luck finding an awesome vintage bike!

    Hey man! Thanks for the video! Greetings from Russian vintage bike heads!;) Do you know, can the Alpha-3000 handle 8 speed cassette with 11-32t?

  • @newoldsteel

    @newoldsteel

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for watching! I’m pretty confident that the alpha 3000 doesn’t have enough lateral movement to cover an 8 speed cassette. I’ve run this with a 7 speed freewheel and the limit screws were at the max/screwed all the way out and it wasn’t working so I know the extra few millimeters from the cassette won’t work with it.
