Vintage Mego: Fortress of Solitude Playset

Ойын-сауық

This week we look at the amazing set produced for the Comic Action Heroes line and we answer some interesting questions:
Why does it say Fortress of Solitude when it's clearly the Hall of Justice from the Superfriends?
Why is Superman fighting alongside the Avengers?
Did you know there are many variations?
Please join in the conversation about this set either here or on our facebook page.

I got The Fortress when I was around 5 in 1976. I still have most of the playset to this day. My brother had the Batman exploding bridge playset. Those were great toys. Still have my Mego Spiderman and Aquaman in very good condition.

I never had this set, and I was never even aware as a kid that there was a Mego 3 3/4" line predating Pocket Heroes. But it looks pretty cool. I've always loved a good headquarters/command center playset, going back to my WGSH Batcave and Star Trek bridge (though the latter of which was incomplete.) Definitely wouldn't have minded a Hall of Justice complete with meeting table and chairs. I'm surprised that they didn't try to re-release it sooner as a part of the Pocket Heroes line, or as a Micronauts playset. Cool backstory about Lou. I'm sorry to hear about his passing, but I'm glad that you were able to reconnect with him before then. Thank you.

I had this playset....the first version....regarding the images on the viewscreens, you mentioned the one of Superman with three of the Avengers....the one of Batman surrounded by those faceless creatures actually comes from a Captain America comic, once again substituting a DC hero for Cap....the one of Bats with the "Help!" comes from a World's Finest cover....and it IS Bats this time...don't know the issue number, but the plot involved Supes and Bats having nightmares about a Asian swordsman; it eventually turns out he's real, and he's a key figure in a plot to resurrect the dead.....by pure coincidence,I had both those issues.

I never had this set as a kid either. Years later I worked part-time at a hobby store and met a guy who had it as a kid. He mentioned it was a major component in his Star Wars Rebel base as he could have all the major characters sit in the chairs around that computer table and track Imperial forces. We got talking about our childhood stories and action figure battles and became very good friends. It's funny how this set seems to bring people together. As a 52 year old adult, I still look for it whenever I go to antique shops or toy shows. One day it shall be mine.

Love the vid! I remember, back when they were called Pocket Superheroes,I had Batman, Robin, and the Batmobile. I used to bring Batman and Robin to summer camp, in my pocket. Another kid brought in the Fortress of Solitude Playset, in his backpack, and we got in an argument because I said it was the Hall of Justice and he insisted it was the arctic home of Superman. Then we both laughed about the goofy sticker. For the most part, as action figures were mostly a Gen X thing, and adult comic book readers were few and far between amongst baby boomers, it is not surprising adults did not notice the faux pas.

I bought most of this set at a church flea market in 1982, it had the doorframe but no door, and I think only the plunger for the activator, but otherwise complete. It was useful for my GI Joe figures. I didn't know there were more articulated variants earlier on, mine was the later sold molded one.

That Avengers cover where they changed Cap to Superman isn't the only instance of swapping. That drawing of Batman, just to the right of Aquaman at 3:23 looked awfully familiar to me. It's the cover of Captain America #187, with Batman drawn over Cap. www.comics.org/issue/28769/cover/4/

Oh thank god, you called him "Captain Marvel" and NOT "Shazam"!!!!! That's one of my pet peeves with licensing now. The original Capt Marvel is a MUCH better character than that bully they call "Captain Marvel" (or "Karl Manvers" by people in the know) at Marvel Comics. It's a shame that the copyright lawyers keep DC Comics from promoting the original character under his proper name. They started that nonsense in the 1970s. If the character had been brought back before the late 1960s, he might still be called Captain Marvel on comic book covers and merchandise.
