Levi's Levi's Levi's, why must you do this to us. Today I investigated and got to the bottom of Levi's quality over the last 50 years. Also I lamented over the fact that hand pockets weren't a thing in denim jackets for about a million years give or take.
So let's breakdown the 70's Levi's Denim Jacket real quick:
1. It's raw (unwashed)
2. It's NOT selvedge
3. The stitching is a little less perfect
4. The sherpa is a million times better.
The denim is pretty uniform, nothing insane which is interesting because I was just reading from Levi's that they didn't really start introducing really uniform denim until the 80's. Maybe this is a bit of a later model and they were starting to do it? Not sure!
Anyways the sherpa jacket is right up there with Levi's products like the 501's BUT ARE THE MODERN ONES ANY GOOD?! Let me know wtf you think!

A late comment but pockets were introduced in 1984 so any jacket before that would be after that and a small e levis jacket with no pockets would be between 1971 and 1984.

You are right. As I was buying these in 1974... I had 3 because they get wet. I tossed one in the dryer. And grab another... And trust me. When they made the slash pocket Sherpa. I was all over that...As riding a motorcycle in the cold was brutal..

Type-III jackets classically didn't have hand warmers as they were still considered workwear and pockets would snag on things (plus, it was assumed you'd be wearing gloves because you're doing early 1900's work like breaking giant rocks with hammers). Also, how's flying during covid? Creepy? Normal-ish? What's the Cinnabon line looking like?

@@TheIronSnail Companies like Iron Heart will sell you a *modified* Type III jacket with hand warmers but I think Levis didn't make hand warmers standard on their Type II's and III's until the 80's from what I've read. Your standard, generic "trucker jacket" model these days is a Type-II with hand warmers. I haven't flown since March and couldn't imagine doing it again until I know an airport bar will be open. Good luck to you!

I used to work menswear retail in the 80's and the orange tab Levi's were the cheaper more affordable range made with a denim that wore holes very quickly. The Red tab were the higher quality Selvedge tighter weave denim. Very high quality and a higher price. During those times you were a nobody unless you wore the Red Tab "supertaper" jeans..In BLACK of course.

I'm into the sherpa jackets and actually picked up Levis 80s/90s one for $18 @ a local thrift store this week! But I want to say I have a newer premium one I got for the same price AND got a $8 Goodfellow one at another thrift store. The Goodfellow one has thick sherpa and an inside pocket with nicely quilted sleeves. It is button and not snap. I do like the Goodfellow one better although it is not considered as cool. The Levis 80s/90s one would be perfect if it had the inside pocket.

If you have an opportunity, take a look at Lee rider sherpa. It's definitely better than modern Levi's one. Vintage look and fit with wide shoulders and good length. I like the collar, its not too big, just right. Buttons are much more usable and secure. And really huge pockets.

  • @drwisdom1

There are multiple issues here, mainly vintage quality and jacket lining. Levi's Type 3 Jackets are really for warmer weather so the ones with "sherpa" or blanket lining are not practical, especially compared to today's fleece jackets. That is why vintage blanket lined jackets sell for less than unlined denim jackets. Originally the two pocket Levi's Type 3 jackets were shorter and had a traditional Western styling making them very flattering. In the 1980s Levi's added the lower hand warmer pockets by lengthening the jacket. That made them more practical but four pocket jackets don't look near as good. The styling and the denim quality is why the older vintage jackets are better than today's jackets. Back in the 1800s the available reasonable cost dye was indigo. That is why jeans are blue. Indigo only coats the surface of cotton fibers and doesn't soak all the way through. Abrasion through wearing and the drying machine rubs off the outside of the cotton fibers revealing the white insides. We call that fading. But the black dye soaks all the way through the cotton fibers so black jeans will never fade like blue jeans because the insides of the fibers are also black.

Just found your account and I am enjoying your videos. I got the exact same jacket and same size, I usually wear a 38 but found it very tight fitting due to the sherpa lining. I compared it to my unlined type 3 from the same period and they are cut practically the same. Therefore with the extra padding inside it makes it just too tight. Hopefully one day I can find a size up and it would work better for layering. Thanks for your content!

I wonder if the insulation in the 70's jacket would stay padded and poofy and fresh for long. In my experience before the 2000s ish and memory foam any kind of padding (mattresses, upholstery, cushions, liners, etc) would just get pounded down to nothing and then never recover. Would love an update in a bit to see if the sherpa and the sleeves are still puffy and nice after 100 wears and a wash.

I would love to know, since I’m in the market looking for another denim jacket… My LuckyBrand was great but too tight… It looked good, but I couldn’t really move like a normal human being… So I am in the market for either a vintage denim 70s probably… or something modern with vintage style and decent denim and quality..And I don’t know the fit of the jackets whether it’s tight three or the lee rider…I’m a fairly frugal artist and I actually enjoy the hunt for great deals.. it would be easy if I had a ton of money… Not much effort just buy whatever I want… But I don’t… So anywhere from the $35-$100 range .. it’s not about the price, but getting a steal is the greatest victory. So if you could do a video or if you have any information on the fit of these denim jackets, it would be awesome… I’m about 5-7, 150 pounds, 17 1/2 shoulders, 31 waist 39 chest… I’m stuck in between sizes kind of… And because I’m shorter, the sleeves should be about 24.. and I’m not sure how they fit which one is the best for my body type… I’m more athletic muscular build that I am slim… But I’m over 50 so I have a a little extra weight but not that much… And of course I don’t look like I’m 50 which is good and bad depending on the situation.😅

They had one color till in the 1970's... Then you spent the next week washing them 10 times.. As they were stiff and real dark.... I would add. The premium version is full Sherpa Lined. The normal one just the collar is Sherpa. The rest is a flannel type liner.

My guess to why they have no pockets for the 70s edition is because it’s pretty much like a ranchers jacket and when you’re a rancher you most likely have gloves right that’s just my theory tho

Had nothing to do with it... There just was no need for them.. As at that time people were tight with their money. As I was buying them for $24.00... Then spent the next 3 weeks washing them like 10 times. And you never washed new jeans or a jacket with anything else. Unless you like socks and underwear blue..Why we would use the bathtub and step on them a few times. Then wash it.. Same for jeans. They were $10.00 a pair. You had to go through the same break in process..

  • @TheIronSnail

    @TheIronSnail

Good question! The fabric is stiff when it’s not washed because it’s starched from sewing Also usually the color is extremely even and there are no bends or folds in the fabric that shows someone wore it for a while/broke it in

Let me expand that, vintage: LEVIS, WRANGLERS, LEE, AND CARHARTT, are way better than the new versions.....l know, because l was born in 1954, and the pre mentioned brands, were better in the 60s and 70s. That's why l hunt out quality, not completely washed out items, from vintage shops. The quality of todays offering is fair.....but my criticism is: the thickness of the denim, it seems to raggy and thin, and not how l remember them. I must admit though: some off the carpenter Jean's at the carhartt wip store are really robust, and double fronted with rivets....so that's good news, in this new world order of raggy denim😂
