Vintage Jen SX1000 synthesizer clean up and demo

Ғылым және технология

After cleaning up old computers I thought I would get my old synthesizer out of the loft and give it a bit of love. The Jen SX1000 is an Italian monosyth manufactured around 1978 which I paid £40 sometime in the late 80s just before analogue became in vouge again. It has a single oscillator, no memories and no midi but is sounds great and the simple layout makes it easy to understand and a great way of leaning subtractive synthesis.
I had not used the synth for some time and while it worked, the controls (potentiometer) crackled when turning them and some controls like the LFO speed didn’t work at all. So armed with a can of Servisol Super 10 contact cleaner I cleaned the potentiometers which after a bit of persistence cleaned nicely.
The controls are nice and clean and there is no noise or crackles when turning them, the LFO works correctly and everything on the synth is working well. I still have a broken top C key which is missing a spring which I am still trying to track down but after a good clean the machine looks and sounds great.
In this video go through the restoration process and then give a quick demo of the sound of the Jen SX1000.

I bought one of these many, many moons ago for 40,GBP and sold it for 150. Thought I made a fortune back in the day. I just had to edit this comment, as I saw you also paid 40 notes for yours. At least you still have yours.

Hey Ian. Really helpful video as the SX1000 was my first ever hardware synth bought well over a decade ago, broken, for £100 (it turns out 'broken' meant one of the PCBs wasn't plugged in!). It's not in the happiest state these days so I'm restoring it... anyway, I was wondering: do you have ANY idea how to remove the damned end cheeks? I want to re-veneer or possibly completely replace mine but I haven't the foggiest how to get them off!

I haven't tried taking them off. Are they glued in place?

Hi Ian thanks for video, i have just bought one in lovely condition and its obvious the pots need cleaning, one question, the brown unit that connects to say waveform selector knob doesn't look like a pot, and there are a couple of them underneath the hood, should i avoid spraying servisol into these as waveform select is a little clunky, like its dirty thanks

The waveform selector isn't a pot, its a switch so contact cleaner should be ok on it but on mine its very lose and I haven't worked out how it locks. I also didn't clean any pots under main panel as there wasn't any issues with them. I have been trying to find a new spring and top C key but not luck yet

@@IanDixonTDL Hey thanks for reply-i too had one of these over 30 years ago, mine cost £50 though-thanks for info, my waveform selector sometimes works ie clicks in correct place but sometimes you have to twist to about where 6 would be on a clock to get the 2nd wave and then 7 for the 3rd wave-only got it Tuesday but its in great condition-i have recently seen adverts for springs and keys so will find the info and message you with it-i am opening her up tonight i think-cheers Ian

@@IanDixonTDL hey ref waveform selector, just fixed mine, make sure it is selecting first waveform, ie all way to left, then unscrew the tiny grub screw that keeps the knobs secure, i presumed there would be like a hole or recess for the grubscrew to fit into bit it just screws into the silver shaft of the switch, so i put know back in correct position and tightened grubscrew really well and mine is now working 100%-the know had been rotating on the silver shaft-hope this helps-just cleaned pots and mine sounds amazing now thanks
