Very interesting. I too have a train that I call my 'late 1940's/early 1950's' representation of a train that might have been seen in that time period around the switching yards/local tracks in Buffalo, N.Y.: (all in HO scale): an Atlas model of Alco HH660 locomotive in Erie Railroad livery, Buffalo Creek Railroad box car (with 'flour sack' logo), Hooker Chemical (Niagara Falls) 1940's style tank car, Ralston Purina (wood style) box car, Baby Ruth wood style box car, and a couple more 'old style wooden' box cars. All of the pieces purchased at train shows/fleas markets/antiques emporiums for substantially less than new (most of the rolling stock for $3.00-$8.00 per) The 'Buffalo Creek Railroad' box car I paid near full retail price for as they are hard to come by and the one I bought had been 'weathered' it really looks neat. You snagged some interesting pieces; never know what you're going to find in 'box lots' of model railroad stuff.

Those small hoppers are actually called ore cars.

It was interesting that the Marklin track was in the collection, especially since there wasn't any Marklin rolling stock or locomotives.

As a Marklin collector myself, it's always cool to see 3-rail AC pop up from nowhere.

Excellent unboxing HO scale tracks , manual switch and structures . 📦 N scale freight cars and locomotives, Atlas , Bachmann and Life Like for me.

Oh wow that Pluto Water box car. 9:05 “America’s Physic” the stories I heard of that stuff growing up. French Lick and the Casino Hotel are about a 20 minute drive from my place lol. Kind of cool seeing rolling stock of places you grew up around especially being small towns lol.

11:11 the item that is on the flat car is called a lathe which is used to carve cylindrical wooden items. It’s used in woodworking. Hope this helped

The Ambroid kit should be an easy build for you because in my humble opinion you are a true craftsman. These kits were all that was available in the early 50s as opposed to today's shake the box kits. Enjoy your videos and enthusiasm.

Oh wow bro that was very of your friends to give you all this. Very generous more rolling stock plus you got a nice turntable and that bridge right there is just awesome. Should be a fun project in the future. I have that same Lionel ho postwar floodlight car that my dad had when he was young then passed on to me and those little hopper here are actually ore cars or ore jennies. A cool find of classic old trains. I may know what the wires of the truss bridge are. The bridge looks to the right for a lift out layout bridge to avoid duck unders. The wires would be for the track power connections. Also, the piece with the rotary number knob and numbers ending in 'V' are a voltage selector for DC voltages to power accessories.

Well done, Harrison.Stuffs found a good home.I just went through a box lot a couple of months ago. Lots of new stuff the old boy never got to. Gave Sparky the new building. I didn't have the real estate. Most of my new shelf build is being done with it. Thank you for sharing 🚂🇨🇦📦

👉 Those wood refrigerator cars with the hatches on top are from the " ice age " before the advent of the mechanical reefer. Cars were iced at icing platforms in major cities and towns. The ice would come up via conveyor belt in 500 lb. blocks and get smashed to pieces then dropped into the hatches to keep the contents cold but also to keep frost off the contents.

Yep, people usually use it to upsell stuff which isn't worth much.

Id suspect that since there is other presidents choice things in there those ore jennys might be from one of the train sets that had a fairly large steam locomotive, 5 ore jennys and a caboose, pretty cool stuff otherwise, especially that bridge.

Nice haul there Harrison. The Ambroid kits were specialty craftsman kits and might have been available up through the 90s IIRC. That one in particular looks to be of a Great Northern prototype. If you can fit it in last video or so I noticed your pony truss bridges over the gorge didn't look quite right and it finally hit me that they need either support for each truss section or a massive truss bridge. That new bridge would look fantastic spanning your river gorge if it could fit.

The ranch house by Ideal Aeroplane & Supply is rather rare. Ideal was a major manufacturer of model railroad accessories in the '40s and '50s (and model airplane equipment before that). Your model is in good condition for its age and I suspect it'll restore into a fine model. I need to rummage through my reference material and see if I can find any information on that model. I greatly enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work! 24 March update: I didn't find out much about this kit as I don't have catalogues from Ideal Aeroplane & Supply (also called Ideal Models when they released this kit), but the earliest advertisements I found for kit B251 were from January 1957 and January 1958 issues of Model Railroader. So, I can't precisely put a date on your model, it's looking like the model was originally produced in the 1950s.

I'll try my best to clean it up and add it somewhere on the layout.

SMT - The brown plastic wood trestle kit in the shoebox was probably the one that AHM offered back in the 1970s. There were many wood car kits offered by Ambroid, Walther's, Silver Streak, Red Ball, Gold Coast, & others. The red parts are fire barrels, a ladder, and a pipeline that runs across the trestle below the track.

@@SMTMainline- If I Recall Correctly, there are the vertical trestle "bents" (brown), some track decks that are open between the rails (brown), small square platforms for the fire barrels that are level with the track decks (brown), horizontal bracing boards (brown), fire barrels (red), pipe sections that form a pipeline that runs horizontally below the track decks (red), & a ladder that runs from the valley floor to the track decks (I think its red).

The long single track shed at the start and the strange looking platforms are Kitmaster/Dapol kits from the UK. You can still buy them

That flatcar is carrying a metal lathe used in manufacturing. Edit: I know this because I am training to be a machinist. Odd that it would be “sitting out in the weather.” Lathes are for precision parts (I.E. usually 0.001” to 0.0001” or “One Thou” to “One Ten-Thousands”) so kind of odd seeing one not weather protected in a crate.

@@SMTMainline currently working with Sharp 1660 lathes, mills also are by Sharp, we got one Victor lathe that has the DROs (Digital Read Outs) removed for some reason and not to mention stuff that is absolutely ancient (which I love) for example we have something that the entire production run is over 100 years old 1916-1922 (company was bought out in 1922). Judging by the serial number it is an early machine which means for those who know of East Broad Top #16. It was around two or three years old at the time this machine we have sitting in my trade school was made.

Those old couplers were called Mantua Couplers. Ambroid was known for making quality wooden car kits back in the day. They also made a glue called Ambroid Cement which was a staple in model railroading. As I stated in an earlier comment to one of your recent videos, materials and techniques have changed in model railroading in the last few decades. That Ideal ranch house is BEAUTIFULLY preserved, it will look nice on your layout. If you are curious about how model railroading was practiced in earlier times, old 1950s issues of Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman magazine can be found at train shows for a couple bucks an issue.

We dabbled in TT scale for a very short time as we moved from American Flyer and settled on HO. Our TT freight cars were made of wood and came as kits. I vaguely recall the Ambroid name and wonder if that's the brand of TT we may have had?

@@avlisk H.P. Products (Harold P. Joyce) was the heavy hitter in North American Prototype TT Scale. In fact, H.P. invented TT back in 1945. All TT including Hornby's newly introduced (2022) TT :120 line got its genesis from Hal Joyce and his 1/10"=1' TT line.

I see you mentioned about Mantua couplers. I seen at least I think a bunch of them at a local flea market I don't know what the guy was asking for them but they're all brand new in the package and there's a ton of them in a ziplock bag. I know they look similar to European couplers

That little single track engine shed looks PERFECT for what I want to put on my first layout. I wish I knew who made it so I could find a similar one because that’s really neat!

Ambroid kits were popular in the US at one time before the shake the box kits made an appearance. They were definitely craftsman kits that required some modeling skill to assemble.

The old wood box cars are a kits they made. They go back to the 50s. Have some very rare to find anymore.

Fun note on some of those old Varney cars (stock car and tank cars): those have actual sprung trucks with working springs! You can swap them to metal wheels but be VERY careful not to eject the tiny springs, and use metal wheels with plastic axles (versus metal axles) to avoid shorting stuff out! You can use spare coupler springs in a pinch if you use the truck springs.

P.S. If you replace a truck spring with a coupler spring, make sure that you replace both (All) of the springs on that side with coupler springs. 💙 T.E.N.

The old champ decals should still work if they had got damp in past. If you try the straight they may disintegrate, but if you get some Liquid Decal Film by microscale you just paint on a thin layer on the decals let it dry and then put it in water and it should work just fine. The Liquid Decal Film acts like a new layer of transfer film so just trim close and your good to go! Thanks and all the best, great video!

@@SMTMainline I have used Champ decals before and they have worked fine with just a thin coat of the Liquid Decal Film painted on them. You may want to use some decal setting solution after they are in place the setting solution will help them adhere and form to the surface. Always a good idea to use a clear coat, semi gloss or flat to seal the decals and paint down when all is dry. Take a look at some modeling videos on how to use water slide decals if you have not used them a lot before. :) good luck and you can always find a few decals that you may not want to use to test with. Cheers!

I've been on the hunt for stuff on facebook market place to make a video like that.

To me it appeared that a lot of those cars that had the circular coupler style definitely look like an American leaving overseas using Märklín track and customizing wooden kit box cars to create is on Trainz while he was overseas ! The couplers was a dead-on sign ! It’s just a shame that you didn’t find “Locomotive” In the boxes that would have been nice to have been an extra benefit !!! 🌊🐺♦️

If you're familiar with the old horn-book coupler, believe it or not there was an era when those were not standard, before the late 1950s each manufacturer either gave you whatever coupler they preferred, or you had to buy them separately. Baker style was one of the options then, Mantua favored them.

Holy smokes. Now that is some sweet vintage freight cars and buildings etc. I've seen them Mantua couplers before at a local flea market. Guy has a whole ziplock bag full and new in packages. I have some Mantua passenger trucks that have them Mantua couplers they are quite neat just an odd thing now. What an awesome looking double track bridge it's beautifully done just need a little restoration

I like that floodlight car too man! Like I said In one of the comments I have that same one that my dad played when he was growing up then ended up giving it to me. I remember my dad brought a box full of old ho scale trains when I was in middle school and I was like oh man I just remember I was just like going thru all of these stuff and this video reminds of my memories revealing the train stuff that was in a big box in 2007 or 08. I miss my dad. He was a great parent.

7:39 That is actually known as a _stock car._ They were used to carry animals such as cows, horses, sheep, and even pigs overland(before those went to the roads), mainly cows though, hence the name "stock" car.

Yeah, you don't see those hardly anymore. I have a string of 'em because their operation fascinates me. They operate as unit trains; and they are run fast, because roads don't want to be stuck with the cattle to "water them". By law, the cattle must be watered every 30 or 24 hours, depending on state. You would see these trains most frequently in the fall and always ran as extras.

@@Santaanacanyon "Water your cattle" is such a funny concept, even though it's a thing they would actually need.

A lot of the railcars I saw in the box had really old baker couplers. Mostly they get used in the UK these days(I think). The SP passenger car is, I would think, a Model Power Harriman. Roundhouse also makes Harriman coaches, and they may have bought their line from Model Power. During WWII, due to metals being a strategic material, many kits were made from paper stock or bass wood. Even couplers were made from wood. Usually a wood pin and drawbar. Lionel during the war was engaged exclusively in manufacturing of subassemblies for others. After the war they got back into the toy train business. There was a huge supply of small war surplus electric motors. This became the core of most HO models. A lot of the rolling stock I saw had Baker couplers. These had a kind of hook that went over the loop at the end of the cars. I think Baker couplers are still the de facto standard in the UK. Baker couplers were kind of standard until the NMRA introduced the plastic horn hooks. At about the same time brothers Keith and Dale Edwards introduced the Kadee Magentic couplers, which eventually became the de facto standard. History dry and boring!

Lionel was involved in war production, their motors were used in AA nd shipboard fire control devices which needed reliable sub horsepower electric motors

The SP passenger car is a MDC/Roundhouse kit. I can tell you because I have several of these cars around. As far as the Model Power version, those cars are not made by MDC/Roundhouse. I suspect the Model Power version was made by Roco or Mehano since they didn't produce their own cars or locos.

It's an MDC, Model Power ones are clones of the MDC cars but have interiors and thick plastic window inserts.

@@CR7659 I've seen a modern offering of one of the Harriman passenger cars from Lionel in the form of a picture on their website, but I'm willing to bet it's new tooling due to the ease of making tooling these days from places like China. The tooling from the Model Power passenger cars may be worn out, damaged or lost by the time Lionel would purchase the old molds for the cars.

Hi Harrison…at 10:13 is an Ambroid (rhymes with android) Great Northern RR caboose kit. I saw those kits from the late 1950s-early 1960s at the loco hobby shop. Those kits were way beyond my model building skills. Congrats on your latest items!

They were beyond most people's skills. Probably 90% of the ones I find are unbuilt, or partly built. Some of the more popular ones a nicely finished example will sell for $40.

probably, if you ever planned too, it would probably not be a full loop as i suggested slightly, but more an extension off somewhere else, which would prove difficult, even with the prebuilt lift out bridge, overall a further extension would prove...less then easy, but it is still possible. though other things would be higher priority

Harrison, at 15:03, you show an Ambroid cat kit. Ambroid is a craftsman kit (not for beginners!), which were manufactured from the 1940's through the late 1960's. There have not been any produced since the early 70's (1971 is the last one I can find). Ambroid was a glue manufacturer, and their models were rumored to have been produced to sell their own glues. Take a suggestion - KEEP THAT BAD BOY!!! They are quite rare.

Northeastern Scale Models and another company have both made select Ambroid kits, the snow plow and flanger, I'm not sure what others. I bought a big lot of those kits in January and a few of them came with the Ambroid cement still in the box unopened.

The Pluto Water car you found in one box was from the French Lick, Indiana Hotel, a Hilton at the time. We spent our honeymoon there in 1963 and remember the spring on the property where the stinky water came from. There's a picture of me standing next to the sign that says, "If nature won't, Pluto will!"

With all that track, buildings and rolling stock, I think the layout might need expanded.

9:33 The gray car is a hopper, it has doors in the bottom to let its contents out. Conversely, the black car at 8:15 for D&RGW is a gondola (a mill gondola specifically) as it lacks the doors at the bottom (hoppers also _never_ have sides that short). There are also bathtub gondolas, which are gondolas that _look_ like hoppers but lack the doors at the bottom.

Hey SMT Mainline, I got some scale train stuff today from my local theft shop at downtown opelika. I got a Bachmann ATSF F7A, GN Flatcar, a BN Boxcar, and a ATSF Caboose. I noticed I was missing some stuff on this like a few couplers and other stuff. The shells are fine and all but some or missing their wheels and couplers. I also do not have a track of my own to test the train cars and locomotive. Please reach out to me when you had read all of this.

The passenger car is a Harriman type kit made by round house

I really enjoy some unboxing Harrison, but it worries me that you miss name your freight cars. The box shaped cars with plugged side doors and roof hatches are all ice bunker reefers. The 40' boxcars with 2 large doors on each side are auto boxes. Used to haul new autos before there were Auto-racks You also keep calling gondolas hopper cars. The low side tight bottom cars are Gondolas. Hoppers are known as "self clearing" cars and have sloped end sheets. So they would have ends the slope into dump gates on the bottom of the car. That Ambroid caboose is a find. It is probably labeled on the other end of the box. I have a few Ambroid cars roaming the layout (Like a "skybox" car for aircraft parts.) that were custom built by a friend. They are mostly just odd cars I couldn't get any other way as they are fragile. My Freind is a surgeon who likes building tough kits (also all metal ones) as a way to keep his dexterity up. Oh also that flatcar with stakes on the side is just that; a flat car. Log cars have 'bunks' which are much beefier. I am really interested in seeing that one bridge kit that is all in one box spread out. That first thing you took out. I'd like to see what it makes. I may go begging after it as I've never seen it and like bridges. Working in Plastic is so much simpler for some of this stuff. (Not the big double track bridge, the one that was all trusses, a kit) Also like the 3 stall enginehouse or roundhouse (yes you can call it that). I have a similar 2 stall one on my layout. I don't have a turntable and pit tho. I model it as filled in. The track just goes across where the pit was and into the enginehouse for my 70's diesels. I used to play on a real turntable as a kid. My home town had one and it still worked. There was also a scale house. That's another neat item that was in older yards to weight cars. Cheers and still hope at some time you will unbox the stuff from P. Waco. I know it would make his day as he mimics you with his own unboxing and other videos of things he buys. He can't edit and uses an actual camera not a cell phone so all his stuff is 'one take' At some point me and his staff may get him on a cell so he can pause vids and then continue. But again he loves your stuff so maybe get to that at some point. My Friend Daylight Dave (who has a great YT channel you may watch, just passed away suddenly and it makes one think. He was only 2 years older that Waco and nearly 20 years younger than me! ugg Sorry for that last downer, keep them coming, consider the suggesting and info and keep em on the rails. Oh one last thing, as you may know, Baby Ruth and others may fit in with your Hersheys Plant. OH and shoot, did you see Walthers is doing a chocolate plant now? It was just! announced. ! Maybe your influence ?

if you arent going to run that huge bridge, you could still fix it up and use it as some sort of shelf display for any of those vintage cars you dont want to get in rolling condition

9:50 The coupler on that wabash box car is actually an old Tyco Mantua design from around the forties and fifties. If there are any spare ones they might fit on the completely die cast 0-4-0 mantua switcher locomotive you restore a while ago, I have the exacct same locomotive and it has those couplers on it.

It's interesting the way they used to work prior to horn hook and knuckle.

Harrison the little hopper cars are Varney ore cars. What you called European couplers are Mantua hook and loop couplers from the 40's and 50's. If you put the railroad and car number in the computer or phone you should be able to find the manufacturer. Ho seeker has a lot of the original assembly instructions. Spray the decals with clear paint and they should stay together.

@@SMTMainline No but im planning on getting it soon (update i got a golden eagle now) and the spirit of 76 one to, also i have a unopened train set, its the bachmann rail chief set and i saw you made a video of it maybe a few years ago and you got rid of some of the lub because they over lubricated it, is it bad to run it if it is over lubricated? I still dont know if its not over lubricated or over lubricated so yea

Don't ever get rid of those Champ decals. Those are premium decals

Ambroid was one of the better wooden car kit manufacturers i tried building a couple of them in the 70sas a teenager they didn't come out too well because my skills weren't up to that level. They were however when properly built weighed and most importantly sealed and painted properly very nice models . Their prototypes were usually cars that were specific to a certain railroad or use.

Nice haul Harris! I'm fairly certain however, that your "brand" you called "ranch house" is a style lol. Ranch houses are more of an American style of housing, I just so happen to live in one!
