When I was a kid my dad owned a ‘71. My mom soon after owned a ‘74 wagon and me and my brothers all subsequently owned them as our first cars as our dad had a good stock pile of parts to repair them and in his view they were a great first car as they were cheap to buy, insure and run. Everything I learned on how to fix cars was all thanks to my early exposure as a young kid to helping my dad fix those cars.

I had 6 Pintos all with the 2.8 6 cylinder engine. Nice performer with the V-6. I installed a 4 speed trans in one of them out of a wrecked Mustang II. I also bought brand new a 1977 Mercury Bobcat loaded with all the bells a whistles. Very nice car. My wife rolled it on an icy road at the 18 month mark. Car was toast. Sadly, she survived unscathed. We divorced shortly after.

I owned a 73 Pinto hatchback when I was in College, a copper bronze metallic, dark brown vinyl roof, steel belted radials, high back bucket seats and...…...shag carpeting! It was a 2 liter 4 spd. and I used to race a classmate in his VW Karmen Ghia on The Maine Turnpike. Both cars would do 95 mph flat out. I put a Stebro exhaust system on it and top speed jumped to 105 mph. Never would have believed an exhaust could make that big a difference. It actually sounded pretty cool for a 4-banger. Moved to Florida after college and had to sell it (no A/C) with 34,000 miles. The dealer couldn't believe how clean it was as I took very good care of it. He bought it for his son in Georgia. One of my best memories of that Pinto was getting laid in the back hatch area on that comfortable shag carpet one nice summer night! One of my friends bought a nice looking Chevy Vega Camback wagon but the crappy engine let go at 12,000 miles! Never had any trouble with the Pinto at all!

My first car (June 28, 1977) was a new brown 1977 Pinto 2 door (no hatch) with absolutely no options. I got a $50.00 credit for the dealership deleting the stock AM radio. Luckily they left the antenna (as I ultimately had an AM FM installed at Mad Man Muntz a few months later). 2.3 litre 4 cylinder, 4 on the floor, no PS or PB, Armstrong air conditioning and Armstrong windows. I kept it for about a year and a half when I special-ordered a 1979 Mustang Cobra two-tone silver and black with blue hood graphics. I ordered it with 4 on the floor but it came in with a 3 speed auto. They wanted to give me a deal on the auto and charge me "their cost" but it being early February 1979 (and there being a dearth of Cobra buyers in the winter) I talked them down to $100.00. It improved the resale value but I still wonder what the 4 speed would have been like.

I was pretty broke from the mid-seventies to the early eighties and owned three very worn Pinto's during that time. They were an excellent durable and trouble free car, and could be bought cheap because of the fire issue. The first thing I did when I got them was go to the Ford dealer and have the fire recall done. It's funny how people always think of fires and explosions with these car yet none of the former owners bothered to have the recall done. At times people make no sense at all.

Have always wondered if this was a factory option, or aftermarket. I bought it in '86. Wish I still had it, and people laugh at me when I say my "lottery" car is a 1979 ford Pinto. We had a 1978 when I was a kid: white with the big read stripe that went down the side over the roof and down the other side (think Starsky and Hutch), also had the all glass rear hatch. The lines were actually not bad and it did have a unique look about it compared to other designs of the 70's. Sadly the quality of everything was not very high, I guess that was in line with the low price. All in all, it was fun, practical, and offered decent value.

I hate to admit it, but they were fun little cars as a kid, Had they fixed the fire problem, They could have sold much longer. In my home town many started hot-rodding them and shoe horning small V8's in them and Vega after sales stopped, That and putting Small V8's in Vega's. But the crash testing fires kinda killed them. They were cheap, Cheat to customize and could be hot Rod projects but never got past the risk of fatal fires in collisions.Maybe another day?

I drove a 1971 Ford Pinto in college. Not a real great car but it was adequate for a student. Many of my classmates had real muscle cars like the Mustang, Barracuda, Plymouth GTX, etc. I couldn't wait to graduate so to get a job with bucks to buy a real car. When the bucks started flowing, I walked into a Ford dealership who was advertising the new Boss 302 Mustang. I looked at the model on the show floor which looked familiar yet strange. The Mustang had a 4 cylinder engine; very odd for a muscle car. It looked very much like my old Pinto. I asked the salesman what made this Mustang a Boss 302. He said it was the decals! Otherwise the vehicle was similar to a Pinto! I spent 5 years in engineering school and my dream car morphed into a Pinto! What happened is that smog control took hold. The oil crisis forced low mpg cars off the market. Asian car manufacturers were kicking the butts of GM, Ford, and Chrysler. All US cars had their performance denatured; total emasculation. I was so disappointed that I never bought a Ford car in my life.
