Vintage Dirt Bikes" 1980 YZ465 Yamaha Motocross"

Спорт

Another iconic motocross race bike from the 1980's. This particular YZ465 Yamaha belong's to Irish rider Jonathan Lusk. This is not a fully original bike from that year but nevertheless a good example of one of Yamaha's most sucessful ever motocross race bikes.

Nice summary! I raced a 1980 YZ465 through 1981 as a teenager in Northern California. The Maico 490 and KTM 495 were making inroads then, but because I was pretty skinny at the time, their power advantage wasn’t that big of a deal. I transitioned from a 1980 CR125 and handled the 465 engine much as I did the 125. I found that the 465 responded well when revved within its powerband. When that was not possible, such as when blue-groove tracks were over-watered, it lugged reasonably well. The suspension and brakes on the 465 were far superior to that of the Maicos, KTMs and just about anything else on the track. While the front brake was very strong, it lacked feel, meaning that it was difficult to finesse. It is hard to explain this to anyone who has only experienced disc brakes. It locked up on me when entering corners periodically. This is a non-issue with disc brakes, but back then it was the price I paid for a strong front brake. I adapted my riding style to compensate for this and use its strong front brake. The European bikes were fast and cornered well, but I do not remember being out-braked by any of them. The ‘80 YZ was designed for high speed stability at the expense of tight cornering ability. It railed berms and outside lines as well as anything, and that was generally the fast way around most tracks for me. I found that it had a few problems, but they were easily resolved. The clutch was too stiff, but I extended the small clutch lever right above the magneto and that lightened clutch pull to an acceptable point. A Gunnar Gasser throttle worked better and cleaned up cable routing. The rear shock was too stiff for hard pack tracks, but changing to a lighter weight shock oil fixed it. The cone air cleaner dirtied up faster than any machine I’ve owned before or since; no fix there, and drilling the air box as with Mr. Lusk’s would only worsen the problem. I was lucky to get three rides or one race in before it needed cleaning, The pipe mount below the gas tank cracked constantly. The gearbox was notchy and I shredded third gear more than once. But in the end those were minor issues, and I made fantastic racing and riding memories with my YZ465.

I had a 80 and 85. The 80 was a low end torquer and the 85 490 was a high end revver. Fun bikes !

This was the first G model 465 of 1980..I owned the H 1981 model with the YEIS bottle under the tank just prior to the 490 in 82..stepping up from a 250 Suzuki RM..and I tell you that it was a phenominal step up in power..and the first bike I had to ride braking harder and backing off alot more to avoid killing myself at wharp speeds..Absolutely ballistic 5 speed slingshot missle that I will never forget.

Remember having to ride harder to keep up when these beasts were first introduced. Quite easy to ride compared with other open class bikes of the day. A good friend hurt himself pretty badly on one of these, which was a characteristic of monoshock yamahas back then . All fine up to a certain point, then oofff! Thats why I rode husquvarnas. Not quite as competitive in all areas, but would very often save you from a nasty prang. Never did figure out how that was , but ask any husky rider...
