Vintage Boy Scout Gear: Antique Cookset & Canteen in Military Surplus Ammo Pouch!”

Hello everyone, and welcome back to my channel!
In this video, I’ll show you how I combine my vintage Boy Scout cook set and 1-quart canteen to create a self-contained kit. To carry this unique setup, I’ll be using a military surplus ammo pouch designed for a drum magazine. This combination forms a versatile kit that serves as both a canteen for carrying water and a fry pan for cooking traditional bannock once I reach camp.

I think I’d add a ranger band looped through itself onto the loop the toggle fits into. The stress showing, foretells premature wear. I make my own ranger bands from an assortment of different sizes of inner tubes I’ve scrounged from my local bike, motorcycle and tire shops. Cool old gear there. 👍

Very nice kit! I had a canteen like that one in my younger years, loaned to me from my grandparents. The water from that canteen ALWAYS tasted so fresh and clean.

Nice find with that pouch. My wife went to goodwill about a month ago, called me from there and said she found an old boy scout canteen in the pouch, or so she thought. She bought it for $3. She brought it home and as soon as I saw the pouch, I knew it was a cook kit and not a canteen. So for $3, I got a complete 1964 boy scout aluminum cook kit. It looks like it was used maybe a couple times and it is in excellent shape; but the pouch has two very small wear holes right where the handle wing nut sits. I personally do not like cooking with aluminum, I prefer stainless steel; but, in a pinch, I have it. I mix and match a lot; pouches, bags, components, etc. with everything. As long as it will suit my needs on the daily. I do this with my EDC, camping, survival gear across the board. No one will ever find, for purchase, the 100 percent perfect set up for themselves. Mix and match is essential.

I love vintage gear and use it all the time. Just found a 1960s Kamp King BSA pocket knife, for $10! It’s in my pocket every day now.

The last time I cooked outside we used four grills and had about twenty-five people outside camping. I don't think a cook kit would have worked out for that. It was my friends once a year cookout while camping. We filled up the entire back of his pickup full of grills, coolers, and chairs. I felt kind of wimpy in my one man tent for three nights but it took me less than five minutes to setup. It was nice to sit in the air conditioned trailer while it rained for three days straight though

Now you got me digging in the shed for a Chi-Com drum pouch I was given around 2001. Then I'll retire my thread bare cover to safety in a tote with my Boy Scout stuff we found when the family went through Mom's house after her death. GOOD ONE Blackie, thanks for sharing.

Thanks I have a newer stainless steel kit with no cover. I was going to make one from the leg of a pair of old jeans. This is nicer and that pouch will work as a basic salt and pepper pouch.

Blackie, greetings from NE Alabama. I have the same BSA mess kit & canteen, but I do not have the Chinese ammo pouch. The way that you nesated the canteen & mess kit was ingenious! By the way, I was in the Scouts from 1949 until 1956. Your combo would also wear well in a haversack. Thanks for another interesting video! Blessins on you & yours. The Old Preacher

Hey, Silver Wolves! Question? I found a vintage scout canteen with no cap plus several incomplete mess kits. Is there a source just for parts? Also, I found a 1940's military canteen set, and the cup interior is coated in rust. Can it be restored? Tnx!!
