If you fit Tonerider 'Hot Classics' to the V52 Tele you'd be stuck for wanting another guitar as you've both the cutting bridge sound and the smooth neck sound- both pups being much 'hotter' than the standard pups- the Vintage V52 supplied pups are pretty characterless in any case, but obviously you get what you pay for- mostly. The Toneriders are excellent pups with a lot of character and respond to the degree of attack you give them and at about £48.00 are very good value- sometimes you do get more than you pay for... AxesRus also make excellent pups for very low prices- a whole set and wiring loom already attached to a scratch plate for a Strat is about £100- this particular set was the best sound I've ever heard on a Strat and I've had a few. The best sounding cheap Tele without any mods is the Mex Tele, whereas the Mex Strat does need a pup change- IMO.

You can't really tell one overdriven guitar from another- fact. I don't know (well I do) why people insist on demonstrating 'the tone' of a guitar by overdriving it. Still there's largely only one guitar that has a real distinct tone different from all else and that's a typical Strat at the bridge pickup.

Tele has the twangiest and more body than the strat, which is the most treblish and thinnest. Les Paul has much more bass than the SG, but these two humbuckers sound distinct from the single coils. Overdrive does make a difference.
