Vintage AIWA stereo volume control easy fix

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have an old AIWA all in one stereo that has been giving me trouble lately by not adjusting the volume when I turn the knob.
After doing some research it turns out that the volume is driven by a digital encoder that can get worn or contaminated which causes the electricity to not go where it's supposed to go which makes the stereo not control the volume as you want
Many of the DIY repair videos on line are showing complete disassembly, but me being lazy I knew there had to be a better way
So I busted out my Dremel tool and made an access hole and fixed the volume in ~10 minutes
Enjoy

As someone who owns one of these Aiwa units and values it as a family heirloom of sorts, your method definitely works and I'm not going to discount how oddly effective it is, it really ain't as hard as it looks to get it apart to the point you can access the rotary encoder. Your info was very helpful as far as fixing the issue I was having, but I'd personally rather just take it apart.

  • @Watcher3223

The "switch" is called a rotary encoder. What happens is that, over time, the internal electrical contacts develop oxidation which can lead to the symptoms you describe; no change in volume or the volume only goes one way, either always up or always down no matter which direction you rotate it. The usual remedy is replacement of the rotary encoder, but the faulty part can be dismantled and cleaned to restore its operation if replacement isn't possible or not economical. You must clean the contact wipers as well as the knob's contact plate using electric contact cleaner, such as Deoxit or QD Electric Cleaner. You should also put in fresh silicone dielectric grease to keep the knob lubricated as contact cleaner will disperse any existing grease in the part. I've done this myself several times, though I take the unit apart and pull the board out to access and remove the rotary encoder for rebuilding as I'm not keen on breaking the cosmetics for a shortcut that may or may not work, depending on the model and how its designed.

Yes it's unfortunate they designed in an encoder with tin plated contacts on the knob and gold plated contacts on the board side. Otherwise we probably wouldn't be talking about this

do you know if we can clean the micro click buttons with contact cleaner as well (soldering new one seems a hassle, i would do it if its absolutely required). I have a similar unit, I cleaned the encoder and it works, i have done it a few times by removing the entire pcb and reassembling. The buttons also seem misbehaving sometimes

@@GalaxianGamerIt's possible, though it's not guaranteed because you may not be able to get the liquid in the momentary tactile switches. However, it's always worth a shot since if it works, you won't have to bother with soldering.

This is great idea and no, its not lazy if it works. I have a very similar type of stereo, mine is an CX-ZR774 also from 1998. It sounds great and it worked well until this same exact issue started to happen a while ago. I don't want tear down the whole thing so I will try this method and post back the results. Have an aiwa but the closest thing i have to a dremmel is a soldering iron to melt the plastic and get through lol, ill probably just fully open it but i have a question. My aiwa's buttons are messed up! My t-bass button open the cd drive and my cd drive button switches it to play cassette tapes. Not really sure how to handle this one lol, ill just pop this open and fix the volume knob for now, its my largest concern. Everything else is fine being iffy i guess, but when my volume isn't working, switching to FM accidentally and hearing really loud radio static that you cant turn down is--well less than ideal haha. My volume jumps between down and up. You have to cradle the volume to get it up to max and i just use control the volume on my input device and leave it maxed out, until the power goes out and I'm there--once again cradling the volume. Nice video though! I'm gonna give this a go tonight!

All the ribbon cable inside is really a broken wire waiting to happen, that's the main reason I didn't crack it open and fix it the proper way. As for the tool, just used a standard Dremel and an end mill bit for plastic/metal. They also have the plunge cutter bits but those cut pretty fast and leave an angled bottom, i didn't want to risk damaging the PCB or board mounted components underneath so used the end mill

@@jambonsambo Yeah its unfortunate, I didnt think of making a video until I had already fixed it haha. So what I did with the dremel was just use it as a router, so I pushed the bit down into the material and lightly cut a channel around where I wanted to cut it. Then I went deeper until it was cut through. I also had a vacuum in my other hand so suck out any FOD from getting into case. You could certainly just drill a series of holes around it until it breaks free, should work
