Vintage 1961 Hoover Keymatic 3224 Washing Machine In Action

Do you have one of these machines you're looking to sell, spare parts or even just the little program card? Get in touch!
Hello, at last I’ve got my 1961 Hoover Keymatic up and running again, I think it’s the only working preserved slant front 3224 too..! Apart from the time line being out of sync in this video, since sorted! Video has a bit of everything really; washing, rinsing, draining and spinning with clips of the machine working inside too. The machine has had a new tub seal, sump hose, timer resistor, pump, heater had to be re sealed in and other various hoses replacing as they’d perished with age. There’s a full cycle video to follow. Many thanks to those who were able to offer me technical advice and help rebuilding and renovating it.

Love the way old washers just get on and spin . none of this endless fannying about like modern machines that take 30 minutes before it can decide to spin a handkerchief lol

The Keymatics 750 RPM spin speed was VERY good for automatics of the time. The 1960 Hotpoint 1501 top loader spun at 1050 RPM even better but used a VAST amount of water to wash and rinse 10LBS of laundry. 45 gallons in total. 15 galls for the wash and another 30 galls for 2 rinses!!!!!

A front loader with top loading washer mechanics. The drum is slanted, the small impeller (at the back, middle of the drum) is for additional wash action (like the jet spray in modern front loaders) and the door has no interlock 😟⚠️. This washer looks like the transition from; twin tubs/top loaders to fully automatic front loaders with the latter technology 😉. Liked seeing the rear of the machine with the back panel removed and, seeing how it works/the mechanics; motor with main + reduced gearbox outputs - slow for inner drum (washing) main/fast for impeller/inner drum (spinning). Pulley/clutch assembly on rear of outer drum, pump looks like its been replaced. Not impressed with slow, short spin cycle, would have retained, bought a top loading spin dryer - 2800rpm, to further spin dry the laundry, if I owned this washer, how wet/damp is the laundry when you take it out? ☹️

The Keymatic spun at 750 rpm. Pretty good for the time. Laundry came out damp dry without too much creasing. Twintubs and single spindryers spun much faster but in so doing creased the laundry badly resulting in more ironing. Not everyones favourite task. My own machine is a Bendix 7147. @ 50 years old now. Spins at 800rpm. Quite adequate as no more water can be rung out of towels or jeans. As i always line or rack dry ironing is rarely necessary. Result.

I'm confused by the wash action. Is there an impeller in there, or is it tumbling like other front loaders? Forgive my ignorance, but it looks as if the clothes are being turned horizontally in the water. Or is it an optical illusion. Either way, I'm impressed. I didn't see any drum veins in it.

  • @TheLaundryCentre

There are paddles in this like a normal front loader and an impeller at the back too. The drum rotates one direction only unlike modern machines and the impeller goes against the drum direction on some cycles (Won't use the impeller on delicate cycles.)

@@TheLaundryCentre I Skipped mine over 30 years ago when the bearings went. Not a reliable machine i have to say. Unessarally complicated with the slanted drum so the bearings were constantly under water. Bendix had the right idea with a horizontal drum and a much simpler drive mechanism back in the 50s. Its now one that ALL front loaders use. Economical with water and VERY efficient.

I got a German version of this keymatic from eBay, looks like it’s been pulled out of a pond all the rust on it and the door seal is shot on that too, paid £300 for it probably five years ago.
