Vinnie, is clearly the highest functioning drummer currently alive, lots of folks with lots of chops and concepts, but none has the mental capacity to put it together every performance like Vinnie, not even sure where to start in comparisons, but maybe if you put Tom Brady, Kobe Bryant, Mario Lemieux, Babe Ruth, Serena Williams, and Mike Tyson in the mix you might start to have a Vinnie

@tattoo39369 I mean it, I have spent a little bit of time with Vinnie here and there, this story is the one that I always share. I was randomly in Switzerland to hang at the Paiste factory before a tour, on the last day the factory was open before the summer break there. The AR person graciously picked me up at the train station. On the way to the factory, he said do you mind if we stop to pick up another artist, he is having breakfast at the hotel; Of course it was Vinnie. Also, I played often with Kermit Driscoll, a good friend of Vinnie's and the brilliant bassist, and a mutual very good friend of mine: Mark Egan. I had breakfast and spent the whole day hanging with Vinnie. He was in the cymbal room next to me trying the last prototypes for his Modern Essentials Cymbals. He would start with a couple of taps and before I knew it the most amazing solo drum performance was happening, over and over and over again, no audience. It was like watching an ecosystem come into bloom. It was at that moment I recognized his super intelligence. It is not like the rest of the REALLY, REALLY smart people that I am blessed to sometimes spend time with. After hanging at the factory, we went to a restaurant in Lucerne. open air, the soup arrived, Vinnie jumped in the air, banged the table and said "This soup is the shit"! It is Vinnie's super intellect combined with his Zen like child's mind, that takes him so far above: Genius combined with awe and respect and humility. There are no other current rivals to his ability, whether it resonates with you on a personal level or not, Vinnie is the greatest living drumset musician.

@@KarlLatham He's certainly one of the greatest to ever grace a kit. I don't believe any single drummer is best at all facets of drumming for obvious reasons. Guys like Vinnie, Weckl, Donati, Coleman, Dicenso, Novak, Sucherman, Smith, etc excel at their own respective strengths, but Vinnie is certainly an amazing mix of many aspects of drumming. It's surreal watching him play.

Here I am to visit the land of triplets, sextuplets and quintuplets. Also, is that nested tuplets I see? No, just the mutant triplets that include dem sixtenth notes invading their space and bad dam tss suddenly we have like way too many dots hanging together. Herbie plays some sorta synth stab, ouch another stabwound. Those ghost notes are haunting me.

So, are you hearing those unison figures with the band on the “a” or the “&” of beat 4? I know according to the chart those hits are on the “&” and that how it is during everyone else’s solos, but the transcription moves by so fast and it seems like you’re notating them on the “a” and then half way thru I swear they shift it to beat 3 even in one spot. Just counting through some of Vinnie’s ideas can be a great exercise in itself. 😂

Play it slomo and you can confirm that, even though it is five notes in a row, the snare hits have more space between them than the BD and tom notes. So, imo, Mr. Buell is correct. But I would think of the subdivisions more like Tim wrote: 8th note TRIPLETS with some further subdividing (not 16th note trips where you might still tap the straight 8th notes. Focus on the 8th note-triplet subdivision.

I commented but had to laugh when reading a comment below that said he's better than Neil peart and I have to say vinnie at age 16 was 5xs better than Neil peart and didn't play dbl bass drumming then. He's like weckl are light years ahead of Neil peart but they don't write lyrics big deal. Watch Neil's solo on Letterman show you tube, it's like my student of 4 yrs who blows the sox off of Neil at ageb17 playing only 4 yrs with my teaching him! Gearge Bosnakis you will be hearing a lot about this now music teacher, full scholarship and I have to say that I I'm so proud of my lol protege! Neil's a great guy who is a very good rock drummer but thatscabout it! No funk, no great fills without his dbl bass drumming he's an average player just ask Bozzio who said in 1980 Neil's a good rock drummer that's it!!!!
