Vincent "Johnny Sack" Curatola on: where The Sopranos went WRONG

Комедия

The Sopranos is by far the greatest TV show of all time, especially now that Aaron Paul has ruined Breaking Bad for all of us... but The Sopranos WASN'T flawless.
Here we talk about some stuff that didn't work.

You know what, I respectfully disagree that the psychiatrist scenes were too long. The way I see it, the psychiatrist is the consigliere for Tony, whether she noticed it or not. But I agree, adding a confessional scene with a priest would be interesting, at least if they got it right.

It would have been so cliche for a person who is purposely doing wrong to then go to confession. Cliche, boring and nauseating. It was novel and interesting that this pos criminal boss instead went to a therapist. Also Vincent is forgetting that the Tony character was having panic attacks. If I'm remembering the show properly, Tony needs to go to a therapist for two main reasons: his anguished relationship with his mother and the panic attacks which threaten to end his life as a boss and an in control kind of man. Curatola is thinking that Tony was going off to confess his shitty life and shitty sins, that wasn't it. He was a mob boss going off to see Melfi not to wring his own hands about feelings of guilt about the life he lives. He was seeing Melfi about an imminent threat to his life: the panic attacks. It was the one thing in his life that he could not find a lever of control against unlike everything else in his life. Tony correctly identified the panic attacks as a massive threat. Going to see a priest over panic attacks wouldn't have made sense (putting it kindly). A priest will have an ultimate endgame: getting the wrong doer to stop doing wrong and to repent and reform. Tony does not have a problem with being a murderer and thief. A therapist by comparison isn't necessarily trying to get him to stop his life of crime. Part of why Tony was there was because there would be no "judgment". And, of course, he just wants for the panic attacks to be removed from his life. Seeing a therapist was way more purposeful and interesting than 'hypocrite makes another useless "confession" to priest' ever would have been. Oh, I really hated the dream sequences too.

Vincent here brings an insane take on what could have been. Tony going to confession would have been profound. However, I think the way priests were shown on this show is emblematic of the true state of the Church in the 21st century- effeminate, impure, and its eyes on the money first and foremost. Tony seeing a psychiatrist as opposed to seeking absolution via the sacrament of confession eliminated guilt and taking account of his sins- perfect for someone like Tony. It succinctly summed up the irony and hypocrisy of the modern day corrupted, culturally catholic 3rd gen “italian-american” Vincent Curatola is a treasure, I’m glad he’s still around...

Love the character and he's a great actor but isn't he kind of missing the point of the whole series? I know it's very unrealistic in an otherwise pretty convincing mob depiction but if he were just talking to a priest you wouldn't get the in-depth psychoanalysis (correct as well as incorrect) running through the show relating to Tony, his mother and also applicable to other characters (especially Christopher, AJ and Janice). Maybe it was to heavy/regular a focal point but it still needed to be in there to approach it from that angle in the first place, the only alternative I can think of to approach that subject would be to have an associate or spouse who just happened to be a qualified psychologist.
