Paul Marie Théodore Vincent d'Indy (27 March 1851 - 2 December 1931) was a French composer and teacher. Inspired by his own studies with Franck and dissatisfied with the standard of teaching at the Conservatoire de Paris, d'Indy, together with Charles Bordes and Alexandre Guilmant, founded the Schola Cantorum de Paris in 1894. D'Indy taught there and later at the Paris Conservatoire until his death.

Vincent d’Indy is one of those composers that many have heard of and yet likely cannot recall the title of a major work. This is not to suggest that his compositions are in any way substandard as compared with more lauded contemporary countrymen such as Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. It is by dint of fate that d’Indy seemed to have receded into the shadow of their success.
D’Indy was particularly interested in ancient sacred music, particularly that of Palestrina. This interest led to his founding of the Cantorum Sanctum in Paris in 1896, which promoted the traditions of Palestrina’s compositional style and supported a course of study that included intensive investigation of its application. In addition, d’Indy employed folk songs in his orchestral works and felt, as so many of the time did, the influence of Wagner.

The beginning reminds me of the start to Shostakovich's 11th symphony, though this did come first.

It was composed when Shostakovich wasn't even born.
Love the opening. So shapeless and then shapes.

Yes.. Reminds me of Rheingold.. Was he a fan of Wagner?

@@Apfelstrudl He was probably one of Wagner's biggest fans, he based his opera Fervaal on Wagner's Parsifal, and he visited Bayreuth multiple times.

Superbe musique. On parle souvent de Wagner å propos de d'Indy , pourtant c'est tellement français dans la texture.

Meets the french version of Strauss’s Alpensinfonie
Who: Vincent D’Indy, age 54. A composer, conductor, teacher, and the de facto leader of the French-Wagnerian school after the death of Franck in 1890. Founder and president of the Schola Cantorum de Paris. D’indy wrote in just about every genre, but his works are rarely performed today. What: Jour d'été à la montagne, a 3 movement orchestral work depicting pastoral scenes in the mountains of Southern France. 30’ and written in a lush romantic style that recalls both Wagner and French folk music. Where: Written and premiered in Paris. When: Composed 1905, premiered 2 February 1906 with the Colonne Orchestra under the composer’s baton. Why: Jour d'été à la montagne was inspired from a poem by the composer’s brother-in-law. The piece was first performed as a memorial for D’indy’s wife, who unexpectedly passed away shortly after the work was finished. Her death has been credited as a destabilizing force that led to D’indy’s reclusion from progressive values, both musically and politically. - - - - - - In Jour d'été à la montagne, a Wagnerian apprentice saves his native France. In this fairly unimpeachable study of high romantic orchestral writing, the music soars when it pauses to take in the French countryside and lose sight of its zealotry. For despite D'Indy's intentions, the journey is far more interesting than the mission, and every time it takes up the cause we are plunged into land we’ve seen and heard before, back into the safety of idolatry and dogma. Intéressant de voir cet oeuvre assez avant-gardiste chez d'Indy... Son oeuvre "helvetia" est de facture plus classique, et sa symphonie cévenole semble faire la jonction entre les 2...

@@alexs1504 Really? His soundworld seems an extension of their aesthetic. For me composers like D'Indy, Chausson et al form the bridge between late romanticism and Impressionism. I

@@egapnala65 I know Ravel's most important influences are Moussorgsky, Rimsky, Chabrier and Liszt for his piano works, he was surely also influenced by music of his time, but I would be surprised that d'Indy was one of his inspirations for Daphnis
