Vincent and the Doctor || Starry, Starry Night

This is probably my most favourite episode of Doctor Who, and Van Gogh is my most favourite painter, for sure. Had to pay a little tribute.
Music: Don McLean - Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)

Well, there was one - his brother Theo. He believed in what he was doing. He gave him the money to keep on going. He died a year after Vincent did and they are buried next to each other. And Theo's wife dedicated her life to show the world what a great artist he was. So, thank God, he was not alone.

The most tragic part of this idea is that even the slightest of changes could undo the past and erase all his master pieces. The butterfly effect, it's possible that if a single element of his life were to be changed, it could rewrite all of history as it pertained to Van Gogh. A simple act of kindness could be all it took to undo a particular painting, or lead to piece not being created, or his sister in law never having realized his brilliance and gathered his work for display......as lovely as it would be to be bale to tell Vincent that he is one of the most beloved artists in the modern era, it couldn't be done without risk of undoing it all...

1:28 This scene preferably catches my eye, as well as the other scenes, because of how accurate it is seeing the world through Vincent's eyes. Vincent had epilespy, and was on medication for it. This caused him to see shades of yellow in his vision, and that's why some of his paintings protrayed that effect. Incredibly accurate!

I have never seen Dr. Who, never seen an episode. But the scene where Van Gogh is escorted to the museum (in our present day) to see his own paintings being marveled at, and the fantastic analysis and review by the art critic is moving, inspiring, and touching. It makes me want to check out what this Dr. Who is all about and makes me wish that Van Gogh could have experienced this during his lifetime. Oh, and the vid above was pretty good to! :)

I agree, and I would also say that the greatest works of Art often comes from one who has experienced pain and tragedy; Great Art is forged in the furnace of Suffering. I'm American and I've been to the museum in Amsterdam twice.....and I can't escape being overwhelmed by his paintings and his story. If you look at the progression of his work he changed his style greatly from his first works and a weird contrast is that his first works were dark and depressed.....as he became more depressed and ill his paintings got brighter and more vibrant. There are quite a few sketches there also when he was working on form such as drawing hands and fingers......but he moved away from a realistic approach and became more impressionistic as time went on.....

The painting 'A Starry Night' is magnificent in the artistry; it's also magnificent scientifically. The eddies in the sky match millions of hours of flight records. I don't know if Van Gogh was a tetrochrome or not. He had a mastery of color that few humans have ever attempted to approach.

We were lucky to have been in Vincent’s company in these short clips, and to have seen even just two of his unique and greatly beloved paintings, Starry Nights and Sunflowers, and the song Vincent never fails to touch my heart. I think of my great poet husband and to a lesser extent my brother and others who have suffered terribly for their Art, coupled with their mental illness, in an often blind and cold world. But, I am with Flamo who believes in the Resurrection, because of the greatest Artist who promised it, and we cannot imagine the sheer ecstasy of encountering the likes of Him and those other Greats who will be with us there for all Eternity!

I was bawling my eyes out last weekend when I streamed watch this Episode on SBS.. 😭 My husband took me to LUME in 2021 for our 13year anniv., when Van Gogh exhibit was on, and it was already such a surreal experience.. What more, to see the real paintings of his in a museum somewhere in Europe..

Had the idea to make something exactly like this, then decided to look it up and yup! Absolutely beautiful :D With the vocal/music separation tech we have now, you could even remove the episode soundtrack so it doesn't interrupt the song

Van Gogh, he had some good technique, a mastery of color, but the way he painted..., bold, rich, beautiful swashes of color run through his paintings..., its almost like they have glorious light emanating from them..., just like nature reflects the sun shining into our eyes...,Vincent had the rare talent of communicating his feelings through his paintings..., and his legacy endures...,

I have to find this episode of Dr Who! Read a book about Van Gogh and I have seen some of his paintings He definitely was ahead of his time and had a tormented and miserable life But his legacy still with us. Thanks NEVERMIND, you gave us something beautiful (and the song just make you cry even more)

The reason Van Gogh succeeded as an artist way way after his passing was because he didn’t want to succeed. His paintings and his work was all so precious to him yes, but he accepted that he’d never amount to anything, I think that mindset is so rare in the modern world, and that’s why so many people idolize Vincent Van Gogh as a creative genius

IF there was but one reason to invent time travel its this. Because Vincent would never ever be alone as people would come from across all time and fill his life with appreciation to a very old age.

yes, for me too. I am born in the Netherlands not so far from where he was born, so I know the landscape he painted during his "dutch years". I admire Rembrandt because he was a painter in his technique beyond believe. But Vincent moves me because he painted with all of what he felt in his heart. And for me he will always be the greatest.

Thank you for this video, i needed to see this with my own eyes. Very comforting. His touching story, together with this beautiful song and soft voice of a singer, that i never realy listened to until now, was too painful to pass by, so it imprinted in my heart from then and i seek for the right answers like soul seeks for piece. I think this is the right way to finish the story. I believe he is happy now.
