Vikings: Valhalla Season 1 Review

Ойын-сауық

Vikings: Valhalla debuts on Netflix on Feb. 25, 2022. Review by Matt Fowler.
Vikings: Valhalla is a crafty continuation of Vikings, though lacking in the original series' spiritual (and structural) opaqueness, which was an element that made the old show stand apart from other historical dramas. It infused the Norse warriors' perspective on life and the afterlife into the fabric of the series so that events, and time jumps, often flowed like a dream. Valhalla is more pointed and purposeful, unraveling events in a more conventional manner, though that doesn't mean it isn't compelling or complete. It presents a much different time for Vikings, so it stands to reason it should tonally change course as well.

Having a black woman playing a Viking Jarl WTF?. That removed me from every scene she was in. Not a bad actress but shoehorning in a black Viking just to tick that "diversity" box ruins it for me.

@@nogb8367 obviously not, that’s why people are upset that a black female viking exists. It would be the exact same situation and reaction if it were a white person who, for example, portrayed a chinese emperor. It has nothing to do with skin color, it has everything to do with misrepresenting the actual history that happened. It detracts from the authenticity that a tv-series set in history is supposed to emulate to make the setting believable. The creators of the show make the show purposefully worse when all that is needed to fix it is authentic casting for the time period.

Not even equality (which physically speaking wound't even be true since men on average are bigger, stronger) but pure dominance. So not only is history being changed to promote "the message" but also, biology is being changed to promote "the message". Also, why do women in shows only need 2 or 3 days of training to beat men who trained their entire lives? So not only are women somehow physically stronger than all men in these shows, but they are somehow that much smarter as well, as it only takes them a matter of days to learn all the skills than it takes a man a lifetime to learn?

@TheMayhemEra idk but there were black vikings One of the best books that helps people separate Viking fact from fiction on this issue is A History of the Vikings by historian Gwyn Jones. In the book, Jones offers evidence that there were people with different racial profiles among Scandinavian people, including during the Viking age. The viking peoples who lived between the neck of Jutland and the Lofotens, Sogn, and Uppsala, were not all alike, and emphatically not of one ‘pure’ nordic race. But two main types of Scandinavian have always been recognizable: the one tall of stature, fair or ruddy complexioned, light-haired, blue-eyed, long of face and skull; the other shorter, dark-complexioned, brown- or dark-haired, brown-eyed, broad-face and round of skull.” (

So basically this new tv show just swapped out all the male characters for females, male priests for female priests, male warriors and kings for female warriors and queens. Also a female “lords” wouldn’t go by the title of Lord ----- they would be called Lady ------, and rest assured that in reality very rarely did you have unmarried women ruling over a city. This show basically took something we all love and threw modern politics into it. A real shame as the show was decent.

Have you seen Vikings? Because some of the best Jarls in that show were female. LAGERTHA, ASLAUG, Just to mention two. Also, this show cut down on the badass shield maidens compared to Vikings. (Again Lagertha.) So if anything this show had less female characters than the original show, or if it had them it pushed them back in the B plot while the A plot focused on the male dominated war plot, which was more gender diverse in the original Vikings.

We KNOW that Arabs and Africans were present in early medieval Northern Europe. Recent archeological insights point to "the global North Atlantic" and this is what the series is also about. Vikings were lifeguards to Byzantian emperors.

Gjermund lost the royal title to Harald Hårfagre (Fairhair). He settled in Iceland and became Iceland's richest man. He had several hundred Christian slaves. He also had a harem of slave women from Ireland and Scotland. Several Icelanders carry on his DNA.

The sagas that we know already have great possibilities of having been embellished. And most likely were. Since the passing age of oral law, history, etc to written "documentation" during an era of wArship of the Gods and conquering and conversion of the remaining defeated (if any) the stories we have of both sides are written by only one. The winner. And has been ever since.

@Rpa Vangchhia One of the best books that helps people separate Viking fact from fiction on this issue is A History of the Vikings by historian Gwyn Jones.
