I think the confusion comes because Floki does mention Athelstan but he doesn’t really admit to any guilt. Ragnar probably shouldn’t know for sure that it was Floki based on what Floki said, but that’s all we have to go on really.

Ragnar wanted to know if Lagertha still loves him, if Rollo still wants to betray him and if Floki killed Athelstan. That's why he wanted to act like he was dead so that he could find out who they would react if he was dead.

Remember when Ragnar buried Athelstan and he started wearing his cross and said "forgive me for what I am about to do" he was asking Athelstan to forgive him because he knew that he was going to use Athelstan's God against Paris. I think that when he saw Paris over the wall he remembered what Athelstan told him about the church. I think he knew he was gonna use the religions but then when he got injured he realized that he could use that too against his own people (Lagertha, Rollo and Floki) to discover their secrets.

Melissa Kessler no, I meant that this is based in what Bjorn did in real life, I think that he accidentally fell, but he decided to use that too for a plan that he already had. In real life bjorn did this and he didn't need to be truly injured. Like Ragnar would bot need that either. I think that he just decided to take advantage of his injuries, since he was already hurt he might as well use it.

Floki by the coffin... "I hate you Ragnar Lothbrok... and I love you with all my heart". That part always makes me tear up. Gustaf Skarsgård is so amazing in that scene.

Yeah, that really hit me. You can see how warped his mind has become, and how conflicted he is. He has this battle raging within him between everything he's been brought up to believe with his faith and its gods, versus everything he knows to be true about his friend he loves and cares for.

Converting, pretending to be dead, and then bursting out of the coffin is actually a tactic that a Viking used to take a city. Only it was Bjorn Ironside who supposedly did it, not Ragnar.

JJPE True, it was a viking leader named Hastein, he planned it with Bjørn Ironside, they send a message to the town called Luna in Sweden, the message saying "we dont want to fight, we want peace, our viking chief Hastein has been converted to a Christian on his deathbed and wishes a Christian funeral". The people in Luna accepted, brought in the coffin along with 6 vikings, hiding axes on their body, Hastein flew up like Ragnar, from the coffin, and let in all the other vikings and Bjørn. So.frickin.cool :-D they wanted to take over Rome but ended up in Sweden.. well...

Elisabeth Larsen Again.. Luna is in Italy not Sweden.. For them to end up in Sweden would be absolutely insane.. Look at the medditeran at a map.. They would have to sail out of the small gap then all the way around England to Scandinavia.. Even then if Luna was in Sweden they wouldnt be christians so why would they give a viking leader a christian funeral?

About Lagertha "betrayal", she went behind Ragnar's leadership by organizing the night raid at the beginning of the 9th episode, hence the "I am the king" scene. Rollo, well he switched sides too often and is jealous of his brother's fame. Floki killed Athelstan out of jealousy and second-guessed Ragnar more than often this season. I come back to the "I am the king" scene where he proves anyone that they all tried to be better than him with the invasion. The only one close to him who didn't betrayed him is his son, Bjorn. That's why, in my opinion, that he is the only one who was told what was coming with his plan. Otherwise, really good reaction!

Shane seems to enjoy it the most out of all of them, him and Calvin understand it. Eric obviously enjoys it too but he overthinks things a lot (like the Athelstan death debacle a few weeks ago), Aaron seems like he's just along for the ride.

One video per week it's definitely not enough.

I still cry during Lagertha's final words with Ragnar; even though I knew what happens.

I agree with Shane about only trusting Bjorn... Lagertha may not have done anything to betray his trust but she has changed with time and I think it’s important to consider that she was trying to makes her own decisions on the battle for Paris until Ragnar came to yell at his round table of leaders.... Don’t think Shane’s level of mistrust is off; he just happens to be outnumbered in a debate with 3 others in opposition. Being outvoted doesn’t mean your wrong.

12:54 Shane: "I've seen him in other stuff, like in season 5 or season 6, so I just knew he wasn't dead." Season 4 should be very interesting....

Technically the current season should be Season 6. The 20 episode seasons are really two seasons in all but name.

Don't remember the episode but a lot of folks thought he was talking about Bjorn which I think is a name based on the word for bear. But Rollo is basically a berserker which also has a root connection with bear. Plus if you read the history the Rollo character is based on you have it laid out for you.

4 years late but.. i had no idea what i was watching on hulu or amazon was a different version. Really cool binging your reactions and seeing the uncut scenes.

Go into every episode without thinking so much. My one criticism of this series is you analyze and over think things WAY too much. The Athelstan death episode is supposed to be immensely emotional because it's clearly Athelstan's body, but majority of you were so focused on what you didn't see that you didn't allow yourselves to experience what you were seeing. For Vikings, just sit back, watch, and enjoy. Then talk about stuff. Try not to analyze too much

I really like them, but I completely agree. The whole Athelstan thing was mind boggling. Like, how was it so difficult to comprehend? I loved him, and it was so sad, but really... You could see his death coming from a mile away, so I don't understand what was so confusing about it. They get too over excited during episodes and miss really important things. It's frustrating.

You know its a badass show when you say "Don't end" at the end of every episode

I like how ragnars advice to bjorn shows bjorns maturity level as the series progresses . At first it was “think with your head and not your penis” bjorn has grown passed that, now its “lead with your head not your heart”

Bjorn Ironside actually did that whole burst out of the casket thing when raiding Luna, Italy. He and a few of his men fought their way to and successfully opened the gates allowing his army to move in and raid the city. It was a real 'viking' tactic.

Yo at first I wasn't excited of season five because of you know what but damn it is so good I can't wait till they get to Bjorn In the Mediterranean.

There was actually an article in a Norwegian newspaper recently about them finding a stolen skeleton piece from the real Rollo (which this character is based upon). He was a Viking which became the duke of Normandie. Fun fact: The real Rollo is actually an ancestor of the British royal family as well.

16:28 Well... you're kinda wrong there, Eric. Bjorn told Ragnar to stop after the one time, and he did. The only reason Lagertha was so cross was because Aslaug came into Katterkat with his baby. Then, the polygamy thing happened. Still, Lagertha herself didn't outright "betray" Ragnar. I just felt that he didn't trust her right hand, Calf.

also, the whole reason he put Floki in charge of the raider what's the set Floki up to fail because he knew he killed Athelston. He wanted to show Floki that Athelston would've been a great help, and they were doomed to fail like they did without him. And he just wanted to set Floki up. Obviously they did end up winning but that was more of like a Plan B and not the original plan.

Ah Ragnars beautiful Trojan horse is great everytime. I like to imagine Ragnar just laying in there listening to everyone talk to him and wonder what facials Expressions he was making. So the prediction of a "The Princess shall crown the Bear, which does not bode well for you Ragnar Lothbrok" came true. All that is needed is the first one that says "One of them will marry the daughter of a king, another will discover and sail around the sea that has no tides. All this, and more, I have foreseen." Not spoilers because they finished the show.

U guys need to watch this show every day like to catch up or at least 2 a day

I'm new to Vikings and as of this post I' finished season 3. I watched Game of Thrones before Vikings and I'm analyzing this show this way but it doesn't work. Also there's a difference between HBO producing a show the History Channel producing one. I'm enjoying the characters of Vikings probably more than the pace of the story.

Princess is more valuable than the king , through her more royal bloodline can be born. Alliances can be formed, the kingdom will obey her

Bjorn Ironside pulled off the christian burial thing in Italy. Floki said say hello to Athelstan to Ragnars coffin. History spoiled me cuz I knew Ragnar was not dead and I knew who and how he died.

Rollo had, by far, the best ending in this show. The Seer was right. What the gods had in store for him was incredible.

Floki: "Send my regards to Athelstan" said with great bitterness and nastiness, and then "I always loved you more than that priest ever did. You betrayed our Gods, you betrayed our people. You betrayed me!" (that's to the best of my memory, so might be a bit paraphrased.) Essentially Floki confirmed his hate for Athelstan and his jealousy and how he took Ragnar's relationship with Athelstan as a personal insult and betrayal.

Ragnar didn't tell them the plan as a "fuck you", I think. He also took the glory of being in the front lines raiding Paris from them too. You guys need to come to terms with the fact that Ragnar is not exactly a good person. He's selfish and corrupt and lost thousands of his ppls lives just to see the inside of Paris. I know he's an amazing character, but he's not a GOOD man. He's sort of gotten lost down the rabbit hole of his quest for discovery and lost touch with the world a bit.

This show is like the opposite of GOT (at least the first 6 seasons) it is extremely fast paced and the timeline and plot moves incredibly quick, while in GOT it is slow, methodical, and slow politics that take a lot of time to unravel

+Felipe Mattos I feel like not that many people get fooled by that to be honest. Anyone with historical knowledge about Ragnar will know he is supposed to die in a very specific way, so this couldnt be it. And everyone else can still figure out that its a fake-out, because of the way some of the shots are framed.
