Viking River Cruise on the Rhine River: Basel to Amsterdam
I boarded the Viking River Cruise Hlin today!
Find me on Instagram at @brendanvanson.
It was a bit sad leaving Freiburg as I really kind of loved the city, but I was pretty excited to be heading towards one of the viking river cruise longships in Basel. After some hard travel in Patagonia, I feel like I deserve to be pampered a little bit. I'm on assignment with them for a full week, so it will be nice to be in a little bit of luxury for a while.
For the trip, I'm on the Hlin doing the Rhine Getaway which is a Viking River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. It's an 8 day trip, and it should lead to lots of cool destinations and hopefully images.
My job is to vlog my experience on the trip as well as capture photos of the experience.
The trip starts in Basel, so that's basically where this vlog starts. I rolled into Basel, dropped my things off at the longship, and then went out for a bit of a wander throughout the city. I've never spent any time in Basel before, so it was cool to wander around. It's a really cool town, actually. I need to add it to my list of places to go back to. When I got back to the boat, I gave a bit of a tour of my stateroom.
Unfortunately, as I got back on the longship, it started pouring rain. As we set sail from Basel to Amsterdam, the rain just crushed us. But, being a bit of a trooper, and wanting to capture our departure, I went out to the front of the ship to film.
This Viking River Cruise on the Rhine is going to be a lot of fun, actually. There are a number of other photographers and journalists on board doing reviews and vlogging their experiences, so it should be cool. Always nice to hang out with some other people in the industry, I'm looking forward to seeing their reviews and the work they come up with here on the Rhine.
Tomorrow, the Hiln and I roll into Breisag, Germany and we'll explore the Black Forest and Colmar, France, so stay tuned for that Viking River Cruise vlog!

A Viking River cruise is on my bucket list as soon as I recover from this stroke enough, enjoy your time never take it for granted, it can change in the blink of an eye, mine did. I used to Salk 2ti5 mi a day , now I’m happy to walk 200 ft. Great footage, I love this traveling in your camera 💕
Can't wait to do this cruise in a few weeks. Loved our blog!
I’m doing this trip in reverse next year! Thanks for sharing! You’ve definitely shown me what I have to look forward to!
I've been staying at a place with no internet and finally decided to just use up all my cell data to binge watch your last 10 videos last night. I'm still trying towards starting my traveling in September and was feeling in a bit of a rut these past few weeks but all your videos made me feel inspired and motivated again.
This room is amazing!! You'll love Colmar, it's realy small but so beautiful! The surroundings are also great with some of the nicest villages in France, like Riquewihr.
Just discovered your videos... love them!! Love your photigraphy and music choices! Thank you for cutting the music while you talk! Great quality vids... 💖

I love Basel. currently here for two weeks. I took lots of photos from inside and long exposures of the Rhine with the middle bridge as my subject. went to Colmar over xmas. such a beautiful city. can't wait to see your blog about colmar.
Going on Viking Eir 21 Sept. Looking forward and yeah bringing rain gear/chilly day gear for the Fall weather. Appreciate the vloggers giving insight on what to expect
Awesome video! So much fun, I did this river cruise last year! If you're not into making you're own plans in the port cities, join the group activities and tours! They are very educational and engaging, especially if you're a fan of history. Most of the tourists were a little more advanced in age and maturity, and I didn't see a lot of younger folks under 18. The bar scene was fun, the staff were great! We met a lot of very interesting people and had a blast doing fun stuff with them. Great time, I would definitely do it again!
Loved Basel am going back for the Viking Christmas on the Rhine in December 2024.

Hey Brendan, I'm about to take this same cruise. Can you tell me if the rooms have US power outlets and if I should bring a multi outlet/USB charger extension? It's my first trip out of the US so I'm trying to properly prepare. Thanks for the videos! :)

@@BrendanvanSon thanks, I have enjoyed watching your experiences. Thanks again for sharing and would love to get your thoughts on what else you experienced here.
Are the trips all scheduled out or do you get time away to explore with your family or friends? Do you stop each day at one location?

+Clifton Dennis lots of free time to explore on your own. You can do as much or as little with the boat as you want.

Hey, thanks for the response. Is the food cost included when you buy your ticket or do you pay as you go? What would you rate this trip out of 10?
Hi! I’m 13 and my parents and I are planning to go on a Rhine cruise. I’m really interested in that one but it says that it’s 8 days. But my dad can only be off for 7 days. Is there anyway we can go on that cruise? And you said the cruise was 7 days? Plz respond.

I imagine you could always get off the day early and catch a train to Amsterdam.

I'm doing exactly the same trip next month so I found this really useful. One question I would like to ask though, is there a dress code of any kind for dinner?

Im going 21 Sept. I understand its a bit casual. What did you see cruisers wearing for dinner?
Colmar is beautiful. Try a Flammkuchen or a Kugelhof (like panettone but Alsatian and delish)!
8:16 lost forever. All yapping, no cruising.
first!!!!

lol sage advice from a ClasSy guy that can’t use capitalization correctly.
Will Viking be cancelling it's cruises to Russia, given Russia's unprovoked war on Ukraine and it's people, and the immeasurable suffering it has caused? Other cruise lines already have; why hasn't Viking??? I am looking forward to a Romantic Danube cruise in September, but cannot support a company that enriches this murderous regime. Please do the right thing and cancel all cruises to Russia. I will be watching for developments; please don't force me to cancel my cruise. I would encourage all other Viking customers to let Viking know if you share similar views as my own. To all Ukrainians; we support you!
Get rid of your hat.
I would really prefer to hear ambient sounds rather than canned music.
How much did you pay for the cruise?
