Viking Octantis - Sunrise Arrival in Duluth, Plus Tender Operations

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here is the cruise ship Viking Octantis arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of August 22, 2022. This was her fifth of seven scheduled visits to Duluth for her 2022 cruise schedule. As she entered the shipping canal, the sun broke through the clouds on the horizon, to give the sky a nice orange glow. After the Viking Octantis passed through the shipping canal, she made her way over to the inner anchorage area. Instead of using anchors to maintain her position, however, she uses her thrusters to hold position. (Note: The Viking Octantis doesn't salute on her arrivals, most likely because she arrives during a time when many of her passengers are still sleeping. She has always saluted on departure, however. So stay tuned for that video in the near future!)
Once the Viking Octantis set up in the inner anchorage area, I made my way down Minnesota Point to an area along the beach where I could get a good view of her. In order for her passengers to visit Duluth and take advantage of the many daytime activities (museums, hiking, sightseeing, etc.), they ride the two tenders that are lowered to the water from the side of the ship. (I didn't catch the lowering operation in time, unfortunately.) Passengers then enter the tenders through a door at the side of the Octantis (just above the waterline). The tender them carries them to the dock outside of the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC), where they catch shuttles that carry them to planned events. For this video, I covered the journey from the Viking Octantis to the DECC, then covered the return journey as well. Along the way, we see the sights of the Cargill Grain Elevator, Riverland Ag, General Mills Elevator A, Pier B Resort, the Great Lakes Aquarium, and the former Duluth Auditorium, which is now part of DECC.
The 665-foot Viking Octantis was completed in December 2021 and entered service in January 2022. She will split her time between Antarctic voyages and Great Lakes voyages. She sails for Viking Cruises and is registered in Bergen, Norway. She has room for 378 passengers and 260 crew members. The Viking Octantis and her soon-to-be-completed sister the Viking Polaris are Polar Class 6 cruise ships, with a reinforced hulls capable of travel in icy waters. During her voyages, the Octantis will also undertake scientific research. She has an area called "The Laboratory" which contains lab space in coordination with NOAA - Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Norwegian Institute of Water Research (NIVA), Polar Citizen Science Collective, Norwegian Polar Institute, University of Cambridge, IUCN, Oceanites, and the Scott Polar Research Institute. The Viking Octantis is also partnered with the National Weather Service and is the first civilian ship sanctioned to launch weather balloons. The Octantis also carries two Cruise Sub 7-300 submarines named "John" and "George" in addition to a number zodiacs, kayaks, and two high speed special operation boats. As you can tell, this is no ordinary cruise ship!

What a beautiful Sunrise for the arrival of a beautiful ship. That was a pretty fancy looking Tender as well. Nice vantage points and catches by you as always and some quite interesting info on this rather unique ship. Thank you for your time and effort.

That is one amazing ship. So graceful! Wish I had the money for the wife and I to take a cruise on her. A big thank you for filming her arrival and for showing the tender going to and from the dock.

@@1Long2Short I've watched several other Great Lakes shipping channels and I think you're the best by far. Although the Soo Boat Watcher guy has some good vids too. I always liked and looked forward to Carolyns prose comments and hope to see more in the future. I can't recall anyone being negative to her.

$ 9000 USD for a Great Lakes cruise last I looked. Nice catch. We have 2 cruises ships in Saint John today. The Norwegian Joy with 4,200 passengers and the Carnival Magic with 3,650 passengers, both make their first calls to the Port of Saint John. Next week we have 3 cruise ships with 10,000 passengers in town.

Such a beautiful ship, what an incredibly beautiful sunrise!! What, please, is a Tender Operation? I've heard of these regarding wildland fires but I have no clue what's going on here...where did that small boat go..was someone sick? Thank you so much for getting up when my chickens do, and bringing this amazingly beautiful video to us!🐓💝

A tender is the small boat that shuttles people between the ship and the shore. That’s how the passengers reach the dock, as the ship itself doesn’t tie up to the dock. In the future, the Octantis may dock herself at the DECC.
