We have not done the drinks package on previous Viking cruises and found it not to be a problem ast all as I like to have an amaretto or two to finish the evening and my wife rarely drinks. However, we have signed up for the package for our next Viking cruise so I can try a new drink now and then and not worry about the costs. For $20 per person per day, it is the best bargain on the sea.

We paid just £85 each for our upcoming 12 night cruise on Viking Venus (thanks to a £100 onboard spend voucher that we received when we booked. It really does give you peace of mind that you can have a cocktail or two and not have to worry about it at the end. 🍹

If you get a mixed drink on board, it will cost you anywhere from $8 - $11. The prices on their drink menu's were so cheap compared to what I was expecting them to be. Plus they allow you to bring your own alcohol on board. You can buy a bottle of rum before you board the ship, and use the coke supplied in your room to make a mixed drink, and they literally do not care.

Thank you for an informative and succinct review. Consistently you raise the questions I would have asked. We are I suspect like you - on holiday perhaps wine with lunch, certainly at dinner, but in-between? I’m trying to remember. At a resort with a good book and a pool I might try a drink before lunch. On the days when we have cruised in areas that were warm enough for a pool day, probably a few more pina coladas. Mostly I don’t want to have to be calculating costs on a vacation. Of course, our cruising has been exclusively (to date) on Seabourn where the experience is all-inclusive, but we are drawn to try the Viking ocean ships, so this package sounds brilliant.

Thank you for such insightful and information filled videos. I have been watching videos by several people about Viking all afternoon today and had a look on their website as well... and it's a very intriguing cruise line. So much is included in Viking cruises that it's actually cheaper to sail with them than with other lines... when comparing the same cruise destinations, cabin types, shore excursions, drinks, and "specialty" restaurants. Since hubby and I don't usually drink anything more than pop, juice, coffee, tea, and mostly water, having a glass of wine or beer with meals now and then would be more than plenty. I think we'd be eating our way through the ship every day though. LOL

I agree with you completely Ebba. Viking is actually one of the better value cruise lines when you take everything that is included. And if you can get a last minute “deal” then even better!

@@CruiseShowUK The "Disney touches" everyone talks about are great! We love meeting characters and hearing the Disney music piped into the halls ... and then relaxing in the adults only sections :) something for everyone!

Excellent, informative video! I agree that Viking have got you covered with wine with meals but the drinks package seems like excellent value if you're going to have a couple of cocktails and gin and tonic throughout the day. I think drinks packages are particularly good if you're holidaying with another couple. I always find we drink slightly more with company. Enjoy the rest of your summer cruises.

We will be buying the drinks package on our January Viking cruise. While I do enjoy a good Pina Colada, I don’t expect to be ordering one on the Northern Lights Cruise 😇 - I’m sure there are plenty of good options for that cruise.

You can buy your own alcohol and bring it on board. They don't check your bags, and they don't care.

Just tuned in to your channel…..have cruised P&O mainly, Queen Mary 2 (once) and Princess (many years ago). Love finding out what other cruise lines have to offer..we are in the 58yrs bracket..appreciating good food, less crowds and quality alcoholic drinks..but….on a budget. On Viking apart from the complimentary house wine with lunch and dinner - did I spot a complimentary mini bar? In cabin…please would you share what drinks are available in there also. As for the drink upgrade…it’s probably worth it for just $20 👍 my fav cocktail on P&O is the Flat White Martini and on Queen Mary2 the Singapore Sling!

Hi Deborah, thanks for the comments. We found Viking to be a very premium cruise line. Everything is very high end and of course that comes at a price. I can see why you like P&O. I've only sailed with them once so far, but will soon be back on Britannia, then Iona in September. As for the minibar, all the soft drinks are replenished as and when you use them. You can ask it to be filled with your favourite soft drinks. The alcoholic items are free once, unless you are in the Penthouse Veranda or higher, in which case I understand it is free for the duration. You can ask for various vodka, gin etc.... It's also worth mentioning that Viking allow you to bring your own drinks onboard. They are very relaxed about it and there is no corkage fee's etc.

Well done David. Very timely as we are doing our first Viking Aug 10, and have been mulling this option over. You mentioned the package covers wines at the chef's table, and since it is a dinner and wines are comped, could you explain the advantage there?

Hi Troy, thanks very much for watching. In the chefs table, you would get the regular wines, however if you have the silver spirits package, you get the ‘upgraded’ wines. If you don’t have the package you can upgrade the wines for $25. I’m sure you will love Viking, it really is a great experience. Best wishes, David

Just one pre-dinner cocktail, two glasses of premium wines and one after drink are worth it. Four premium drinks, from say 5 PM to 10 PM, would be up to $60. I always opt for it.

I don’t drink alcohol so it wouldn’t be worth it for us. Our minibar has alcohol drinks replenished daily and I don’t like fizzy soft drinks eg Pepsi etc. my husband takes his own whisky along. Going on Viking Orion Alaska in may

Hi Paul, soft drinks at lunch and dinner are included, but outside those times, I understand you have to purchase. However, you also have free soft drinks in your minibar setup. Depending on your cabin grade… the standard V grade cabin gets replenished once per cruise. The DV and above is replenished daily.

Hi Jim, It's called Zettle Go. It's basically a cash register for your phone! Each time you get a drink, you put it in the app and cash out. Then you can see a report that totals everything up! It did the job. Cheers.

That would be included on the Silver Spirits drink package as it only costs around $6 without package.

Interesting video. May I ask whether the art work behind you in the video is available to buy or did you paint it yourself? I was trying to work out if the colours above the ship were from the Red Arrows or the rainbow flag 🏳️‍🌈 lol. Also, like you, I use a drink package to try drinks I wouldn’t normally order. I remember nice sherries on Cunard and bitters on MSC. That is one of the amazing benefits of a drinks package - expanding your palate and experience.

We are light drinkers. I’ll have a beer with lunch, and we will have two glasses of wine at dinner. I love a martini in the evening. So drink packages are not for us.

It wasn't worth it for my dad and I. We are fine with drinking 2-3 beers or glasses of wine at dinner and then having 1-2 after dinner drinks most nights. We did an 8 day cruise, so we would have ended up paying $320 for the package, and our ala carte drink bill came out to something like $120. Our entire bill for the trip came out to be around $350, but that extra money was from an excursion we added on the ship.

@@CruiseShowUK Probably not. I usually only have 2 drinks a week on average. I enjoy drinking, but not to the point where I would have 2 glasses of beer/wine at lunch and dinner, and then have an additional 3-4 drinks a day just to make it worth it. One couple we met on our cruise got the drinks package and said it wasn't even worth it. The husband loves to drink and his wife doesn't drink a lot. She was ok with having 2 glasses of wine at lunch and dinner and then maybe having 1 additional drink after dinner. The wife didn't need the drink package because she probably only spent about $20 on additional drinks the entire cruise.That means her husband would have to have his 2-3 beers during lunch and dinner, and then have an additional 6 drinks every single day to even make the package worth it. I personally don't think it's worth it unless 1) you love to drink, or 2) you want your drinks upgraded to hard alcohol or premium beer/wine at lunch and dinner.

Hi Aya, I didn’t really take notice of any limits in place. I will say, Viking is not a line for big drinkers. Having said that, I enjoyed many drinks as and when I fancied one! Very highly rate Viking and although I’ve only sailed with them once, my week on the Viking Venus was one of the best, out of the 47 cruises I’ve taken.

Thats pretty good for USD 20 per day but why would there even be a UK sales tax or any other sort of tax when the cruise lines get it all at both duty free and tax free.?

Thanks Doug for commenting. I think the tax issue has more to do with itinerary. The cruise we were on didn’t leave UK waters, so the cruise line has to pay tax on money you’ve paid to them. Still worth every penny.

@@CruiseShowUK Agree with you but that does not happen very often more often the perks of duty free and tax free which were always meant for passengers not cruse ship owners but that came to a end quickly when Americans took over such as Cunard, P&O etc.

Now $25 per person per day.

If I could get a drinks package for around $20usd I would.😢

Why would drinks include UK sales tax? Cruise lines buy everything not just alcohol etc duty free and tax feee so why UK sales tax?

Hi Doug. When cruise lines sell something to a passenger they are bound by the tax rules in the waters they are sailing. So if only sailing in UK waters (like this cruise) then a tax would apply. You might notice most cruise lines don’t open their duty free shops until out in international waters. The fact that the cruise line didn’t pay tax on their stock doesn’t stop governments wanting a cut of the sale of said stock. But as soon as the ship is in international waters the tax wouldn’t apply.

andI think you will also find that prices for drinks and other goods are more expensive than buying on land. Last cruise RCCL bottle wine here in OZ AUD 17.95 bottle about roughlyUSD13 or so with the change on the ship which they charge you or cost me AUD 94 and it was not a mistake either. Simply a rip off and all duty free used to be for passengers not cruise lines when Americans took over the cruise lines that is when thing or the Ines got simply greedy plus 15 to 18% on top then gratuities that you are supposed to pay for service. Not sure if you know it but P&O Australia do not have gratuities there would be riots and all the other lines allow you to take them off.
