VIJAY PRASHAD - What's the Left to Do in a World on Fire? | China and the Left

At the conference China and the Left: A Socialist Forum held on September 18, 2021 hosted by Qiao Collective at The People’s Forum in New York City, Vijay Prashad delivers the closing keynote titled, “What's the Left to Do in a World on Fire?”
The conference was a one-day convening of organizers, scholars, and journalists whose work grapples with questions of Chinese socialism, Western imperialism, Global South internationalism, and the renewed Cold War consensus taking hold in the West. Speakers and events analyzed current trends in U.S.-China relations, Chinese development, and international relations through a socialist, anti-imperialist lens. The conference provided a space for those invested in challenging the rise in U.S.-led imperialist aggression on China to meet, strategize, and discuss. The convening was co-sponsored by Monthly Review, The People’s Forum, and CODEPINK.

    Vijay has given some great talks throughout the years, always hitting the hard points. This time he lays it out for America's so-called "Left." What right do they have to levy any criticism at the century's long struggle of 1.4 billion people? The Chinese have accomplished what they have accomplished, with the boot of YOUR country's imperial forces on their neck much of the time. Until you produce a revolution in your country, you have no room to criticize the Chinese Revolution. Yes, they make mistakes. But then, who made YOU perfect??

  • @actionflower6706

    @actionflower6706

    2 жыл бұрын

    Mistakes. Mao’s famine. The destruction of Tibet. Concentration camps. Tianamen square. The declared policy to invade Taiwan and enslave 24 million people. These are not mistakes. This is CCP policy. Do you have a right to declare anything wrong with KKK lynchings? You must have made a mistake forgetting someone’s birthday…so no. You cannot criticise. You just have to surrender to our enemies who want us dead or enslaved. In fact, you should apologise for not being in a tower on 9/11. Very inconvenient for ISIS. What rights to life Liberty and the pursuit of happiness does anybody on the planet have? None, except at the discretion of the CCP.

    This gentleman is a brilliant orator, why because of his enthusiasm, energy, sense of humor, and ability to construct meaningful Sentences that shift in color and context yet all fit together in a flowing, informative and substantial narrative. He asks questions and provides reflective answers while providing References to authors, and people who have contributed to improving peoples lives and conditions ,while encouraging solidarity and Security among people. His example of solidarity is the Chinese ability to work together against the irradiation of COVID. His message is collaboration and public Action!

    Mr. Prashad is always dropping great references. As I result, I can now look forward to reading the works of Wang Hui and Zhang Weiwei, specifically Hui's "China's 20th Century" and "The End of the Revolution" and Weiwei's "The China Wave" and the "China Horizon." I've only been familiar with the works and analysis of Mr. Prashad for the last year or so, still - after reading three of his books and listening to countless podcasts, interviews, speeches and lectures I am now far better equipped to understand the workings of US imperialism, allowing me to attack it with a potent internationalist and leftist punch.

    The depiction of Australia under Scott Morrison is spot on. Unfortunately, that's Australia under any leader before and since Gough Whitlam, who advocated the development of a mature and independent foreign policy. Of course, that was anathema to the US, who connived to have him dumped in 1975 by the Queen's man in Canberra. Since then, no Labor leader has dared say 'boo' to the US. Humiliating and tragic.

    Its an Anglo Saxon alliance. It's strictly a white man's organization. Johnson declared its an alliance of English speaking countries. That says it all.

    Yijay is right. The best we can hope for is to trust in the leadership of China. They have shown us the way improving connectivity with their One Belt, One Road. They have built Socialism in this Century and delivered a high standard of living to all their citizens, with open borders respecting the self determination of all peoples, especially the Tibetans who are riotously resplendent having been freed by the PLA from horrible slavery. All of the other nations have shown themselves to be failures. The Middle Kingdom is the exception. Long live Xi Jinping thought! This was inspirational.

    My class of 17-18 year-olds 99% Chinese Malaysians, had always been some students are from the Chinese schools and some from the English schools. The English type tend to want to take credit for any project, to be the head of clubs and societies in school but for the name only, used the position to score points. When asked what did do as president of a club, they are caught unable to say much BECAUSE THERE WAS LACK OF CONTRIBUTION. The Chinese type, not holding any committee posts, just ordinary members , can feel shame if they do not participate or contribute to any activity organized. Hence I fully understand the term PUBLIC ACTION you are talking. The Chinese students give support for the benefit of the group, the English ones just wanted the name with a little effort as possible.

    That was why Che and Fidel said everyone will be educated in Cuba, for you need a well educated population for government to function well. Cuba has withstood 60 years of a blockade and attacks still today by the CIA. The U.S. fears socialism! In the U.S. it is all about "I", whereas in Cuba and China it is "We", we are all in this together. The U.S. is failing at home and abroad, and the 2024 election might see it all come crumbling down. Terrific talk Vijay!!!
