We had a divide in my family, when my dad had a stroke at age 92. He had written a Living Will, saying that he did not want medical intervention that would prolong life. But when he started to recover, I could see that he still had that spark, that bubble that just rises up, an effervescent will to live. But the siblings who were responsible to carry out his living will could not see that, they kept saying, This is not what he wanted. Fortunately, he just kept recovering on his own. He lived another two years, and I cherish those two years, because I got to know him, and spent many pleasant moments with him in that time. He was a tough old WWII vet. He had nine children, but didn't really like kids very much. That period of time was a healing time for me.

What a precious thing to learn abou the hardships the older went through. So they acted Strange.

Big fan of Viggo Mortensen's here,his deep knowledge of many foreign languages,also his wisdom and philosophy of life set him apart from a world of 'stars' with nothing of interest to say,in any language...His most interesting and diverse body of work in movies,and many varied other activities, also make him a very special person...Thanks for uploading this wonderful t.v. interview,which, to me at least confirms ALL of the above!...

Pardon me for asking in English as I do not speak any of the Scandinavian languages, but if I understand correctly you are saying that Viggo speaks with a western Danish accent? I would like to learn all three languages and possibly Icelandic eventually. I have enjoyed Viggo's work for years and know he is a bit of a polyglot given his diverse background and appreciation for different languages. My late father also suffered from Alzheimer's disease so I found this interview to be particularly touching as it hit close to home.

@@seamusin1697 Viggo’s family is from Jutland - the continental (or mainland) part of Denmark sorta speak. I’m obviously not a linguistic , but there are several different dialects or accents in Jutland alone (western Denmark). Viggo - to my ears, speaks with a general Jutlandish accent mixed with a subtle hint of American English. If I were to recommend IMO (as a Dane) the best/most usable of the Nordic languages ty get by with would I say Norwegian for sure. The grammar is fairly easy as well as the pronunciation - And as a English speaker do you have a good foundation to begin with. Its a beautiful language. I understand all of it but unfortunately cant speak it myself. Icelandic is much more difficult and distant from the other Scandinavian languages. But it sound way more badass though. Danish, Norwegian and Swedish all evolved from Old Norse which more or less is modern Icelandic. - I hope that helps you :)

I nursed geriatrics back in my younger years and most afternoons two of my lovely lady patients would be sitting in their shared room, opposite each other in their chairs, chatting as they travelled on a train from one location to another. It was always around the time my shift ended so I would join them on the train and answered their questions about where I was getting off and what I had planned for the day. It was a privilege and delight to be included in their afternoon dementia imaginings 🥰

LOvely and intelligent man. I love his work as an actor.

I have looked after older people with different types of dementia all my working life and loved it, in my opinion it is the best career in the world. Viggo describes perfectly how we manage people's confused phases. A 90 year old lady asks "Is father home from work yet"? No Mary, he's working overtime, he'll be late tonight. Her anxiety is allayed and she forgets for that evening, she might ask again but we can easily put her mind to rest. One school of thought is that you must tell the truth but in my experience it is cruel and what is to be gained by the patient? Nothing but added anxiety to a person who is suffering from this dreadful, heartbreaking illness. White lies are a valuable tool in my world.

I agree. We have to tell my Dad these white lies, to alleviate anxiety, and hopefully move on. I tried to be truthful at first, but it's gut wrenching to see his heartbreak and fear and confusion to learn that loved ones have passed away, again. I still hate lying to him, though, it makes me feel slimy.

I agrew with you, I worked with people with dementia and there is no point of telling the full truth and whole truth because it leaves them in distress and they forget anyway. but the body remembers the feelig of distress and ivertime it becomes anxiety which is when the body feels that feelig of diatress for no reason because the body is now taught to have the feeling of distress. this is science, im not makig this us. so why let people wih dementia feel distressed everyday, they'll get sick overtime with anxiety and they already know something is wrong everyday. they know they are in a facility but hey forget what's really going on, they forget they have dementia so I believe making people feel at ease if you can. let them enjoy the rest of their lives.

Very true.

Viggo is on the money here - roll with it, don't fight their thinking. There is a care village in the Netherlands that is for dementia and alzheimers sufferers where everything there (greengrocers, butchers, hair salon etc) are staffed by people with dementia training and people can go about their business in whichever reality they are in that day and all the staff just go along with it - they don't pay for anything as everything is on account so the "patients" get the feeling of living "normally" for as long as possible.

Lovely how Viggo apparently spontaneously switches completely to English 24 mins into the show, with his mother tongue taking over to express sth he feels strongly about :)

🇳🇿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇳🇴 Greetings from the NZ where I've lived for more than 40 years. That was very enjoyable on so many levels, from refreshing my Norwegian*, to hearing Viggo sound a little how I imagine sounding to others with his pot pourri of immersion in expressing himself in different languages and most importantly his insights into his experience with dementia/Alzheimer's. As I approach 70, having already considered death in as practical a sense as I can, I'm aware of the possibility of some form of dementia and after hearing what you had to say Viggo, I feel moved to write my kids a note (to be put aside) outlining your view on not correcting someone in that state. *Born in Scotland, to a Norwegian mother, my first language was Norwegian as my parents lived in several countries for my first 10 years and the last time I spoke it fluently was in the 70's when I worked in Oslo and now.... being so isolated in the Antipodes with a big extended family in Norway, alas my Norwegian has hurtled to positively 'rusty'. Thankfully I can understand it, but get very frustrated at not being able to express myself fully any longer.

I have lived in Panama, Brazil, Mexico, Belize, Italy and the US. Some people think I am rootless, and others see me as bohemian, some seem as if they wish they had my life and others fear my choices will leave me alone or destitute. I just think different people have different priorities and different fears. I never feared moving and discovering new cultures and languages. Your guest has an amazing facility with many languages and has followed his heart. We cannot fit everything into one life, yet if we follow our passion for something when we can, it makes for a life seldom boring, and one I am very grateful for.

I love to listen to people speak in another language even if I don’t understand them. It’s just fascinating and even if you don’t understand it you can tell which languages sound beautiful and which ones don’t. But even then it’s always nice to heard people speak a different language. Vigo is fluent in a few languages. It’s beautiful to speak more than one language because it gives you a connection to other people that only being multi lingual can bring.

Thank you, especially for the subtitles. Loved the ease at which you and your guests flow between different languages, and the notion too that some ideas can be better expressed in one tongue over another, and Viggo's point that home is not so much a place or a nation, but home is where you make connections and communications with others. Where's the vaccine to enable that?

@@georgemikrogiannakis4746 I know it is a bit confusing. The show is a both Norwegian and Swedish production, though the languages in Scandinavia are close. Quite as if a Swiss, a German and an Austrian would communicate using their own different "German dialects". The Norwegian Prime Minister is obviously speaking Norwegian whereas the third guy in this clip is speaking Swedish.

What a fabulous interview, very interesting, informative & of course with Viggo, humour!! I have loved this man since the first time I saw him in Indian Runner. He is such an interesting old soul with the biggest heart, I can't wait to see him in his first directorial film. Thank-you for the interview 💕🥰 (Habs #1)

Stumbled across this very insightful discussion by pure chance because I was looking for information about the premiere of "Falling". Working with the elderly as a nurse for the best part of 20 years the issue of how families function or rather distinction with their frail old members has always fascinated me. Very beautifully put into words the way relatives often get lost trying to look after persons with dementia, getting very confused trying to understand what is happening. Thanks for this great show, surely not the last time I' ll check it out. And hopefully cinemas will be allowed to open sometime soon again in Germany too. Can' t wait to watch this movie.

As a 'failed immigrant' (and I say this sort of with tongue planted firmly in cheek), like Markus points out one does want to apply oneself as best as possible. I did so in a country where the dominant language(s) were not my own. Although the process was sometimes bumpy, I felt a sense of accomplishment being able to work and live in a second language. Being able to understand local humor and participate in culture via local language was a treat, when it worked well.

Such a beautiful man in every way. I watch everything VIGGO...and one movie still haunts me to this day. 'The Road' is perhaps not the film to watch in these troubled times. It haunts me in the dark hours...but then I think of 'A walk on the moon' and I feel much better!

Yep he does. As a Dane I understand him, but it sounds funny, sometimes. He speaks many languages 🤓 Most Danish people understand and speaks English. I also understand Swedish and Norwegian.

His accent is jutlandish (Western Danish) with slight traces of American english - so I dont quite follow you... in fact liguistically, its the furthest from swedish when talking about the danish dialects.. if anything its closer to dutch or german in the pronunciation.

I have the every day death since a child its very freeing.

Enjoyed his talk until he alluded to political bias It’s like a drug to Hollywood types

So our leaders give "permission" to be outwardly racist, misogynist, intolerant? Please. Our leaders actually give permission to use the excuse of these things as a reason you fail. I.E. whitey held me down, I'm poor because he's rich, The cop arrested me because I'm Black, not because I committed a crime. I can't get a job because my host country doesnt understand me, not because I fail to learn the language. Try a little personal responsibility, huh. BTW, no one needs permission to act or feel a certain way. It's either in their thoughts or not

Sorry I really love and admire Viggo as an actor since decades. But that he is willing to waste so much money that could certainly be put to better use only to spread his ashes in multiple places I find absurd and depressing. I’ve always thought he was a more intelligent and a deeper being but now I see he’s taken on all the vacuous, narcissistic and empty Mindedness of Hollywood and the USA acting community. Very sad and disappointing. Myself I wish I could be instantly disintegrated but if I’m cremated I can just be thrown in the river or where ever. I won’t know the difference so my ashes being in places that I love is a ridiculous and meaningless concept.
