*Some History*
Vietri sul Mare is historically identified with the ancient Marcina, first an Etruscan-Samnite coastal settlement, then a Roman port.
The precise origin of Marcina is not yet fully defined even if the most widespread hypothesis indicates in Marina di Vietri (the current seaside village of the town).
The printed publication of the entry Marcina begins in the 15th century, when the first typographical editions of Strabo's Geography began to spread in Europe; the real diffusion of the term among historians and in publications came with the geographer Filippo Cluverio, who in 1642 wrote: "...Marcinae oppidum illud est, quonunc dicitur vulgo Veteri...".
In addition, some medieval documents of the Codex Diplomaticus Cavensis of the Badia di Cava, which allude to the existence of ruins of an urbs vetus, which would be the basis of today's toponym Vietri.
In documents of 969 and 972 it is said intus ipsa civitate, qui fuit ipsa cibita de beteri (= veteri); in that of 972 it is specified that de locum de beteri ista et illa parte flubio Bonea iuxta litore maris.
The Vietri area, with the anchorage of Fuenti, had a sheltered port, a unique landing place in the area, since the shore of nearby Salerno, near the mouth of the Irno, was exposed to the waves and subject to silting up.
Its history until 1806 was associated with that of Cava de 'Tirreni, of which it was a fraction. Marina di Vietri, in fact, was used by the monks of the Badia as a commercial port for trade especially with the areas south of Salerno.
From 1860 to 1927, during the Kingdom of Italy it was the capital of the district of the same name belonging to the Salerno district.

All these towns have something unique about them, but medias tend to promote only a few that are popular. This a beautiful place with a lot of history. I'm sure all those ceramic stores in Positano buy some here and then sell them at very high prices there. Thanks to tours like you who who go to this forgotten places.

Indeed Esther, that's what I also think... in a way, this channel started with this objective in mind: to show "forgotten towns" of Italy, and not only the most famous ones. Many of them are in my region, Lazio, where Rome is, but I hope, if the channel growths and I'll be able to afford to travel more, to show other "less touristic" ones too in other regions. Vietri was spectacular... as many other towns in the Amalfi coast. Thanks for watching!

Ciao Christine!
