You almost got it right. The mosquito net elastic slips under the loops around the brim. Those loops are solely there to keep the net elastic from slipping up. Also, during my period in Vietnam 1967 through 1972, most army commanders thought that the boogie was unmilitary looking and required the majority of troops, particularly the support guys to wear that stupid baseball cap.

That aspect opens my eyes. I've perceived for long time it's called "foliage loop". My 7 1/8 is still intact and crisp in the original bag since I bought 30 yrs ago.

I got two of these, I wear a size 7 and I used a hat stretcher on them and now they fit fine, I got mine from charleys surplus out of Chicago, I’m very satisfied with mine

I did the same, except I used a dog bowl. After soaking it in water I left it in the sun while it was still on the dog bowl until it was dry. I wear a size 7 1/2 but was able to stretch a 6 7/8 vietnam era boonie to fit my head comfortably without any tightness.

Yeah, same here. General Abrams stopped the shipment of these Boonie hates to Vietnam when he took over from Westmoreland in late 1968, the GIs were "personalizing" then to the point where it was getting ridiculous, so he ordered a halt to the Tropical hats...well you could still get "In Country" boonies from the South Vietnamese, and pictures of a lotta GIs show them wearing locally made and sold boonies. So that's why there are a lot of these small sizes still out there. You actually want it to fit a little tight, since when it's really hot and steamy outside. ie in a jungle environment, what hair you have will get sweaty and matted down, and the boonie will stretch a little, you don't want it to come down on your head too far, I reenacted Vietnam for 8 years, I learned this, this small size is fine.

6 7/8 is for nobody, it's just for collection. I 'm a Sm-Sh and can't wear this size. Even sz 7 is too tight.
