They are not rivaling come on. ASEAN is all about cooperation so they can become the best economic bloc in the world, their goal is to surpass EU and they are pushing for even more cooperation inside the bloc. Vietnam is based on manufacturing and Malaysia is focused on services and IT. Make no mistake, these two countries are pushing for each other to become prosper.

Malaysia GDP per capita (PPP) is almost $38,000 whilst Vietnam GDP per capita (PPP) is $15,000. Vietnam should be compared with Thailand and Malaysia with Australia in the near future. Both Malaysia and Vietnam are in in similar position, as their growth rates and population size are bigger than Australia and Thailand respectively, hence will likely overtake those respective economies in PPP. For example, Malaysia GDP (PPP) is $1.4tn whilst Australia is $1.7tn. Vietnam GDP (PPP) is $1.5tn whilst Thailand is $1.6tn.

We just want to cooperate, and unlike the EU, ASEAN will try not to meddle in each other politics or problems. That being said, VN is a true success story in Asia. 10 years ago, if someone is to tell me that VN will surpass PH economy per capita, I will laugh. But VN did surpass PH in per capita term in 2019. Now, VN is chasing its richer southern ASEAN countries. As at 2024, the difference per capita income between VN and ID is below 1000 USD. And VN is expected to surpass ID in 2030 or 2032. Vietnam GDP (PPP) is $1.5tn whilst Thailand is $1.6tn
