Vietnam street food - Cooking 100 Crabs for 4 People Family Dinner Meal in Vietnam

Seriously, you can find sea crabs everywhere in the world. It is not what I am looking for when I am in Vietnam, specially for my Vietnam street food adventure. What I am impressed at street food in Vietnam when it comes to crabs is Paddy Mud Crab, Rice Field Crab or Rice Paddy Crab. Those crabs are super small and aggressive. People in Vietnam turn them into delicious crab dishes nevertheless. I was lucky to have a dinner meal made of paddy mud crabs with my neighbor. She made a dish called Paddy crab paste vermicelli soup. This dish is a dish have full of water that the broth is charming, and sweet. The sweetness of paddy crab paste vermicelli is from the crabs themselves. This noodle soup is easily recognized by the red color of tomato and crab soup base.
FYI: This paddy crab soup can be labor intensive, but I was surprised to find that it took my neighbor only an hour to make. For a Vietnamese soup noodle dish, I would say that is pretty quick.

    This is a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup dish called Bún riêu in case any body is wondering. In American you can get it in some Vietnamese restaurants, though it is usually a rare sight to see as it's conventionally a less commonly known dish to Americans and other Non-Vietnamese people which would make it a harder dish to sell. The flavor is a very light broth with an oceany tang to it from the integration of the crab meat and tomatoes and with the additional added garnish of green onions and lime. It's a very delicious soup during the summer on rainy days, especially in tropical areas. Flavor wise it'd be similar to a Tom-yum soup that is commonly found in most Thai restaurants

    Then the name of this dish is "bun rieu *cua* " (the struggles of having an english keyboard). Literally it means "vermicelli crab soup" and it's quite an iconic food in Vietnam. Have fun and be sure to pronounce it correctly if you want to say it in Vietnamese.

    Being from the same country and moving to the US at an older age I'll say this, I do love to eat crabs and other animals but i can understand that how it's made is brutal. However I ask that you respect what we have and keep in mind that Vietnam isn't like the U.S. or where ever, it's Vietnam* some people only have this to eat because they live near the coast. Just like other places like Africa or anywhere thats poverished they grind up insects and eat those because they don't have precious resources to make a lot of foods(yes Vietnam does that too) or even get their own food. Keep in mind this is a country that's been through a war roughly 30-40 years ago and has barely recovered thanks to the government. Also, they don't even have real milk in some areas, but instead powdered formula.

    here in the Philippines, we eat that type of crab too. in the morning, we will wash it, put plenty of salt to the crabs in a bowl and put it in the fridge for at least 4 hours, then eat it in lunchtime. but we will wash again the crab together with the salt then it's ready to be eaten raw. a hot rice and vinegar with garlic and chilli for dipping and it's just perfect.

  • @zedlav5784

    @zedlav5784

    Yes, we eat them raw. We just suck the essence of the crab and follow-up with rice. Or we dip it in the vinegar with garlic and chili first before sucking the inside of the crab. Marinate it with lots of salt for at least 6hrs (not 4hrs) in the fridge.

    I like Pho too. I love this crab noodle soup too. I love the fact that all the ingredients were so fresh.

    Laeticia Laeticia crabs need to be alive while cooked because if not it could be dangerous and distasteful

    I adore Vietnamese food. I got addicted to it back in the early 90s from a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Tacoma Washington, in an Asian area of town. So excellent, the rice noodle soups, assorted curries. Pho was outstanding. Wish I could remember the name of the place, haven’t been back since I moved in 2005. Anyway, if you get a chance and haven’t yet experienced Viet food, do yourself a favor and try it next chance you get. For a 1st timer I’d recommend beef or chicken pho, Bun Cha and a side of Goi Cuon (fresh rice salad rolls, not the deep fried version)
