    Refreshed memory of my time in Vietnam as an Army Helicopter Pilot on March 29, 1972. Last flight there was Danang to north of Dong Ha (C-4 outpost) and Hue Citadel, and back to Danang (Camp Horn) on the Danang River. My, how times have changed! It always was and always will be a beautiful country with hospitable people and places.

    By 1975. I was only 15 yo. After I came to USA in 1981. And by the time I worked for public schools in Virginia. My supervisor and lot of bus drivers all were soldiers stationed in Vietnam . They told me about the war. About how they fought in VN. I was really appreciated what American soldiers did for Vietnamese like me. Thanks for your service.

    @@NonstopEurotrip a taxi driver robbed my wallet(not a big 2 taxi company). A market stall holder slapped my girlfriend , many people rude shouting. I read not many people go back there compared to Thailand. Chicken dishes without any actual.chicken at airport. Bus conductor screaming at girlfriend because she was 2 minutes late from eating. Always cheating going on. I am always astonished by people who enjoyed it there too. But we all have different experiences. But the surveys say not many returnees to Vietnam but fabulous coffee, cheap lager, nice food just terrible people. The main problem is the taxi drivers as usual but many people trying to trick and cheat.

    Never really been a fan of sleeper trains, with inconvenient departure and arrival times rarely coinciding with hotel check in and check out times. To me, the beauty of train travel is to be able to look out of the window and watch the world go by, not something you can do at night. And to be able to have a conversation with fellow travelers while sharing a snack or a drink. I have had some wonderful times traveling by train, and met some fantastic people, some of whom have remained life long friends. I enjoy your videos and please keep them coming.

    Yeah that might be true if you’re on holiday and enjoying yourself. When one is on a tight schedule (maybe a conference from 09-17 then dinner) and you want to maximise time at home, a sleeper is amazing. Or maybe if you want to spend the whole day with your family the day before you need to work, then hop on the sleeper train after dinner and some films and come to the city in time. And long sleepers can make dreadful journeys decent, like any day train over 12 hours would just be painful but with a sleeper it’s possible with just a few hours of “awake time”.

    I have slept very well on sleeper trains...not so well sitting in a seat all night. It is nice to get away from other passengers sometimes. For example, one passenger ahead of me several seats was coughing continuously and very loudly. He seemed to have strep throat. He was not covering his mouth. I went up and offered him a mask. He was uninterested. The conductor on Amtrak, the American train service, said Amtrak policy prevented him from saying anything. Many elderly persons were seated around this fellow. I found an empty seat a few cars down and, thankfully, the conductors did not bother me even though it was not my assigned seat.

    You are so right. I love sleeping in a quiet room on smooth riding train, but night train departures and arrivals don't mesh with hotel check in and check out times. My biggest night train complaint is the lack of a bar car where passengers can socialize over a chilled glass of champagne.🥂

    We traveled north from Ho Chi Min City to Nha Trang on service SE22 in 2016. While the trip was less than 8 hours, we selected a sleeper compartment to ensure a little comfort and privacy. Looking at your video, the layout of your VIP compartment seemed similar to what we were in during our trip, although with none of the extra amenities that the VIP service has to offer. It also sounded as though your VIP carriage had much better soundproofing than on our trip - possibly double-glazed windows have been fitted. We agree that a rail trip along the length of Vietnam is a great way to really see the countryside and see more of the rural Vietnamese lifestyle. A great video;

    it has an element of luxury which would cost much more in many other countries... I mean, obviously it's priced towards the foreigner (not sure if these tickets will be 40% of price for the locals, on many trains they are), but, that's less than the cabin price on the Penzance or the Caledonian if I remember, an individual cabin in China will also set you back around thesame for only a slightly longer journey.

And incredible value for money at around USD40 for a thousand kilometre trip was incredible value for money. Beautiful scenery. The train service is very similar to an Amtrak’s roomette slumber coach. I would say the Vietnamese version is a better bargain in terms of price per mile, although Amtrak does include more meals instead of just breakfast and light snacks. Vietnamese equipment appears to be very dated, and cleanliness is probably more of an issue for bathrooms rather than on Amtrak trains, although I’ve encountered some rather grimy bathrooms on Amtrak.

    @@NonstopEurotrip I had much of different experience for Amtrak, to me, the average Vietnamese style trains are the kind of default old unfancy style train for me... (although the one in this video is actually quite fancy), Amtrak, gives me a lot of WTF vibes, though some elements of the service are amazing. to me, Vietnams system reminds me of a 50year old hard working but uneducated Midwest farmer, whilst Amtrak, is the geriatric 70year old Brooklynite. albeit, I don't think I ever fully successfully traveled by Amtrak, so that might skew my opinion.

    Sorry for the late comment - watched it last night, but could not comment 1st. Afraid of going off-tangent that time... Back to the video: Hooray for sleeper trains! However, based on your explanation, the very high price is due to comfort (bed comfort), but no dining car or on-board meal service - yikes!! Great scenery too! Great trip, and yes welcome to Vietnam. Something I can get from Railway in Vietnam are (Correct me if I wrong): in some places, there are single track section, especially in Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh route. Also at this route, the track will closer to coastal area of South China Sea. Talking about Currency, well yeah, there's similarities between my currency country and Vietnamese Dong. If it's reach millions of Rupiah or Dong for transport, it considered as expensive.

    Although maximum speed can reach 100 km/h, average speed is just as you calculated. Here are some reasons: - The rail is single tract. Train has to stop many times to give way for opposite trains. The Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh railway is the busiest route of Vietnam; at least 12 passenger trains operate daily plus many freight trains. - Narrow gauge rail cannot support higher speed.-

    I think you would enjoy the New Delhi-Trivandrum Rajdhani as part of the landscape would look similar. However, be warned, India is a massive country, and it takes 2.5 day journey for a 2000 mile trip across the subcontinent. En route, you cross several biomes, from the subtropical plains in Delhi, to the semi arid landscape in Gujarat, to the lush forests along the konkan coast. Bedding and Food is included with your ticket, and I'd recommend First class if you dont want to share, or AC 2 tier if you are ok with sharing. You also witness multiple locomotive changes along the way, if that's your thing.

    @@NonstopEurotrip Great. What time of the year ? Summer (May-July) in the northern part of India can be unusually hot and dry (40+C for weeks on end), so be prepared for that. In addition, be extra careful with your items if you are using local trains. For a lot of long distance trains, the opportunity of theft is lower in First class or AC 2 tier as these coaches are typically isolated from rest of the train. But this is not the case for local services.

    I live in Southern Vietnam, while my grandparents live in Northern Vietnam. When I was a kid (late 1990s to early 2000s), I traveled with my mom on a full train journey from Sai Gon to Ha Noi to visit them every year. The trip took roughly 40 hours, which meant we spent 2 nights on the train. We often booked the 6-berth cabin because it's cheaper than the 4-berth one but still more comfortable than coach. Food and water was included in the ticket back then. Since air travel has developed in Vietnam, we instead take a flight as it takes only 2 hours and doesn't cost much if you book low cost airlines. Now, train ticket is expensive, the service is bad and the cabin is not clean, so people only take short trips or overnight trips; nobody takes a full journey anymore. Why would you suffer for 30+ hours on a shaky train when you could fly with the same or less cost? However, the view through Central Vietnam is breath-taking! Maybe that's the only perk of train travel in our country.
