Great job Allen, always a pleasure to see you work and explain things. Viessmann is one of my favourite boilers, it's just so easy to work on. As for the venting with screws you showed at the beginning of the video, this would be completely unacceptable and a red tag offence here in Canada. The customer would have no choice but to have it changed. The strap band however is acceptable here and very common in residential applications due to the low cost. Commercially it would have needed clevis hangers. I agree with you on adding another expansion vessel. Again, great job, keep up the good work.

Hi Alan,job method very well explained.not really got a problem with the screws in the joints .We used to use 4.2 mm dry wall screws ,kind of like short self tappers and they look the same ,That is a long flue run so clearly done to prevent joints parting or slipping under pressure.The support is very poor though .They had a similar rubber pipe arrangement on some of the Vokera HE boilers Even though these were new we soon had problems with them leaking on the pipe joints and to a lesser degree blooning .Vokera soon changed them back to copper though.I did have one or two occasions of the connecting pipe between the expansion vessel and the system got blocked .This also shows system pressure rising rapidly.but when you checked the tank it was fully charged .Just make sure you deflate the tank before you remove the pipe or the water comes out under pressure over the boiler electrics.even though you have taken the pressure off the rest of the system. Cheers.

@@AllenHart999 or maybe it just wanted to pressurize the expansion vessel when the side of the heating was depressurized, or just pneumatically reseal the valve, who knows. I like to watch it, thanks.

Clearly the deposits sit inside the rubber hoses and then break off and go in to heat exchanger , shame viessmann could have avoided these issues via copper or metal pipe , it annoys me when they update design but leave old designs to fend for themselves, they should make it a service item at least. Great work as always Allen.

Very thorough, it’s a shame but only self employed lads like yourself get time to do such an intensive job; most firms don’t allot the time to properly repair boilers I’m afraid. The magnetite in the pipes is the same as what you find in hep2o non barrier pipes, the early stuff, I had a 10 year old system with it where boiler was solid and radiators all starting to corrode. Keep up the good work, excellent insight to our trade👍🏻

Hepworth said just dose the system with inhibitor as normal as it was the equivalent to an open vent system with an F&E tank in oxygen absorption. Nice to read feedback. Maybe the Hep system you came across was neglected.

Probably, I have found issues on systems with non barrier pipe which have caused corrosion at a rapid rate, as you say it’s all down to how the system is maintained. In a lot of new builds, ive never seen inhibitor added.

The flexi pipe to the expansion vessell gets compacted with crud, being small bore also causing the gauge to go high, you'll be surprised at how much comes out!

Good job, I bet the diverter valve has a bit of that nasty crud stuck in it as well.

hi Allan to me the scale looks like calcium as there looks to be a liff water unit to help with hard water ,was the scale magnetic.maybe it needs changing or a new one fitting.

Would you not recommend a combi mate or a inline scale reducer to protect the plate heat exchanger?

Hi Allen an interesting video to watch , just a matter of interest did you remove the main heat exchanger to flush it out? as we didn’t see that bit in the video, them viessmann plate heat exchangers ,In my opinion only clean out if you actually jet wash them thoroughly You’ll be amazed at how much more black flakes come out afterwards

Replaced one of these on Monday. Landlord wanted it serviced last week. Asked him if anything wrong with it, No he says! Got there for service and surprise surprise tenant complains of hot water issues! Long story short he got Viessman to check it out who said beyond economical repair so I ended up replacing it! 🙂

The debris looks like Magnetite. There is a newish Adey installed magnetic filter, interesting to see if that was clean or all full of fine black silt. Full flush and system dosing could reduce the build-up for a while. Maybe the magnetite bonded to the old rubber hoses until it fell off in chunks. Has the heating system run for a period in the past without dosing I wonder?

What a flue bodge Alan ! On a separate note how long should 3 port valves last ? Mine never seem to last that long and get stuck, replacing or freeing the motorised valve makes them work again for a short time, Maybe there is an alternative now ? Thanks keep up the good work.

Did you put new washers on the plate?

To some extent, a similar issue can be found on some older industrial machines. Some of it can be down to the science of the material. As the rubber, or EPDM, expands under pressure, it can open up "pores". Boiler stops, tiny particles of contamination rest in pores, or cracks at a microscopic level, and as rubber contracts, this is then embedded. Cycle this over and over, and you start to bond the material. Gets big enough, and then the plaques come loose. The cycling between extremes of pressure could have really made that situation a lot worse too. Rubber/EPDM great for sound isolation, and acts as a good bridge between materials. Dissimilar galvanic corrosion can bring it's own issues, and of course, too high of a dose of inhibitor can also cause issues with seals etc where metallic and plastic components have a dramatic difference in rates of expansion, so under scrub, the chemical in the inhibitor can help the media seek through mating surfaces.

Hi. Great video. What chemical are you using to clean the heat exchanger at 9:09 ?

It's the rubber its hydroscopic Allen they naturally entertain oxygen through the wall of the pipe they are like brake hoses on your car where you are supposed to change brake fluid at specific periods the kick space fan convector heaters are bad for it too the flexys on them have to be replaced regular or at least rodded to remove the crap out of them .I now try to pipe kickspace heaters with the flexy copper anacondas

Might be worth looking inside a fresh hose, compare it to one like in your video. Looks like bloody tin foil. Great video. 👍

Nice job as per usual that you did Allen , but most customers would not pay for that kind of work with the time it takes and there lies the problem , you try to advise that it needs doing but they won’t pay for the time it takes.....👍

Spend a fortune on a stainless steel heat exchanger then fit cheep rubber hose that oxygen can pass through that leads to the build up of crud on the inside of the pipe therefore blocking the flow and return pipes to that expensive heat exchanger, well done Viessmann. And I thought Viessmann said Quality all over it, should have fitted a Potterton Puma, and if you don't know what that is let me tell you how Potterton died a death and Baxi brought them out. Flue's with screws in, I think regardless of Viessmann, you need to fit those screws, Viessmann may say its not to standard, but its not up to them, rather the engineer on site, I for one would fit them as if that flue was in a void in a house and it came apart, it won't be Viessmann in the dock in front of the judge and jury, it will be you, even Worcester Tech now says fit screws even though it has not been a requirement, unlike Vaillant and Glow worm where it is a must in the Manual.

Had the same problem with these boilers after just a few years since install, I personaly will not put my name to one. And trying to get spare parts is a Joke I once tried to get a condesate trap it took Viessmann 4 attempts to send the right part One frustrated Plumber x One frustrated customer x One frustrated shop assistant where i orderd my parts from...

Why are these hoses so bad do you think Allen? Good tip regarding checking the vessel 👍🏻 Once you’ve drained and recharged the vessel/checked for leaks, you keep the pump gauge connected & take pressure on system up to 1.5 or so. If your pump gauge increases too - you’re proving the expansion hose to/from the vessel is clear.

Hi Alan I have just had my boiler fitted yesterday. Could you let me know what you think is the ideal temperature settings for hot water and radiators for the boiler to be at its most efficient and cost efficient. Viessmann 111-W storage combi 26KW.

It would be interesting to know what a chemist's view of this might be. The use of different metals together with heat and dissolved salts perhaps? I believe Viessmann now fit copper pipes in place of the rubber hoses, so they must have a fair idea what's going on. Have you asked them what causes this build-up of material?

Viessmann do not use screws at all.

Hi Allen. Great video thank you. I recently flushed my radiators on my 10 year old Viessmann system and the water was very brown a sludge like. Do you recommend putting an inhibitor solution into the system to prevent this and improve its efficiency? Also every so often (very intermittent) the boiler kicks in on the radiator side and increases the room temperature to about 24 degrees without the thermostate even asking for heat?. Any ideas why this happens? Thanks Steve

Steven Foster if the water is brown or sludge like you definitely need to flush the system and run a cleaner through it like sentinel or fernox Finish off the job by putting in an inhibitor and you should be okay the boiler wouldn’t fire on its own unless it was calling for heat via the thermostat?

has NTCS been added back in, i thought they removed it a few years ago?

Still exists but you'd only note it on the job sheet, not on a warning notice if issuing notice due to AR/ID fault.

Allan can you please cut open an old plate heat exchanger when you find one to see what's going on inside. Nobody has so far described a reason why these boilers have this issue blocking issue.

Hi Allen I’ve been subbed for a while, and your just the guy I need to talk to. I’ve just got home from work to find my vaillant boiler has a fault code of F61. I believe it is the pcb unit. I was just wondering if this may be a common fault and what would a general cost of this repair be? Just so I don’t have my pants pulled down on the price.. any info would be great. Aaron Clough , if it is the PCB I have had problems with the capacitors on the circuit board get replacements and change them out it will only cost £5 to repair believe it or not!

Hi excellent video. If the system is clean as shown by the water sample. Then where have the bits in the hot water plate come from? Could you explain why you would fit an extra expansion vessel. Surely the boiler should be made correctly to allow for 16 odd rads. Thanks you.

If you remember science classes at secondary what happens when you rubber balloon and put it near your hair it attracts it because of static electricity and we all know boilers build up static over time that's why certain manufacturers don't recommend putting wireless controls in them

Glad you mentioned static: Fluid passing through non-conductive hoses generates static. Not sure that will encourage magnetite deposits but well worth investigating.

Did you flush out both sides of heat exchanger? Or are you just concentrating on the the heat side?

They are a great idea for servicing. Unfortunately they used the wrong type of rubber.

Why two expansion vessels needed Allan? Could you explain please....

Because its a larger system the 8l vessel included in boiler won't be able to suppress the higher amount of expansion within the system

At risk with that flue

This Viessmann boiler has a fantastic large bore stainless steel main heat and plate exchanger, with the rubber pipes filed with rust, that must come from the house radiators. To test this you need a magnet, clearly this is what's blocking the plate and can go on to block the main burner/ heat exchanger. Can't see if there is a Omega 1 filter fitted that would take care of the rust and prevent it from blocking up the internals. The later model 100 w changed over from rubber to copper pipes which are less pone to rust clogging up, as rust doesn't stick to copper like it does to rubber. Your customer may need new radiators or a major power wash of each radiator on the system or worst case removal of the rads.

@@AllenHart999 so the elbow restricts flow into and out of the heat exchanger with rubber pipes, so when changed for copper does that then improve the overall flow.

@@AllenHart999 I must be honest I do love a mystery, I watched you video, chemically cleaning the plate using acid with fumes from the plate exchanger. I was hoping you were going to change it and then cut the old blocked unit open. Maybe you will exchange for new and then cut it open on camera, there are a lot of engineers out here in all industries that would love to see that and might be able to offer there theories. I said this a number of times before, this corrosion is magnetic Iron Oxide,,, rust and that's Iron or steel exposed to oxygen in air,,, or in this case water. What does everybody think most of us are on 'SI lock Down' working from home so it's a mystery guys let's combine and solve it.

Allen I need your help! We’ve had a call out he said he’s fixed our no hot water problem told us to wait and it been 6 hours+ and we still don’t have hot water.

Hi Allen, in regards to the flue support, I've been led to believe that if strap banding is used to bring an unsoported flue up to a safer standard it was an ntcs whereas if used from installation it was at risk?

Oh my life is a misery because of my Veissman boiler. Every winter, the heating comes on and the heat exchanger blocks and ends up needing to be replaced. I have had it flushed 4 times in the past 5 years. And even that doesn't help. I have a maintenance contract, but it doesn't cover this issue, so I estimate I have spent £2k on repairs so far, and nowhere near an actual fix. I only wish I could remove, clean and replace the heat exchanger myself because it usually takes 3-4 weeks to get a repair done, during which time the whole family is washing from a bucket. Every. Single. Autumn /Winter. Where do you even start to fix this properly? (hard water area++)

I normally advise a full system flush and full boiler flush at the same time. It will last quite a few years then. Good luck.

I have family telling me to replace the boiler, but I have watched quite a few of your videos and you have not said anything about these boilers being substandard, so I am thinking that maybe the water hardness is the issue, or that I need a more expensive flush?

The flue was well supported (it was not going anywhere). Not in the way the maker and most would do it though.

@@AllenHart999 Clearly not dangerous. It could not drop, but joints may be pushed out of place if pushed up. But he put self tapper screws in to prevent that. he should have wrapped the screws with duct tape. The screws did not penetrate the exhaust tube in the flue. Not 100%, as the flue must not move, but not immediately dangerous.

Replace rubber hose to copper prevent it happening again!

The filter is not grabbing the crud build up, it is being bypassed. The water is going via the prime heat exchanger through the rubber hose, through the plate and back again via another hose, not entering the CH loop which the filter is on. The water will be _hot_ as well making matters worse for the hoses So build up is in the plate.

If you here the birds singing it means that the Corona is fake!

Hoses block cause shit boilers and bad installer

It’s not the nicest of jobs to replace those hoses. Personally I think the manufacturer decided to fit cheap shite rubber hoses rather than copper. And the last idiot who’s replaced the plate heat exchangers obviously never thought to look at all the shite that had built up inside them.

Best thing is put a new boiler! No point serviceing it.
