what is the reason for the cross in the reverse turn

strange,isn't it because you can just as well use an open box step..........

Slightly simlified: It is harder to achieve the amount of turn needed while turning left as your partner is on your right side, so the crossing of the feet allows more turn than if you closed.

He wasn't very clear. He means standing on the right foot, stepping with the left.
