I wonder why he didn’t comment her vibrato .. it was very fast and narrow and would not underline the tonal language of Brahms here in this passage. Or would this kind of vibrato be expected in an audition? Besides that nice playing of the student!!

Her vibrato is gorgeous.

i actually enjoy the tone of the young lady far more than the teacher. Her sound is very original

@astoriacub She has a better Cello and relaxed hands than He does. Her sound is definetly warmer and pleasant, and that's very good for younger generation. It might as well be a blind compare. It doesn't matter what grades on paper they have. She has a soloist qualities. Ho have ears and resolution - will hear that.

Is it just me or does it seem "rude" to start playing when the teacher is still talking? Is it a common pratice in masterclasses so that the student can show that he understood what the teacher meant?

These masterclasses are about the student getting a better understanding of excerpts and their instrument in general, not about the teachers. If the teacher says something and the student wants to try it out then go for it I guess.

I disagree. If the student wants to try by him\herself it is very nice indeed. But people do masterclasses to learn with the teachers, so, you wait until the teacher teaches everything him\her have to by time. After the teacher passes all their instructions, then you play. If you don't need the teacher, so don't go to a masterclass. My teacher for example, she corrects me a bit. I hear to her instructions, after she finishes her teachings, I play rapid, tryng to demonstrate that I understood, and then I play the whole part\piece following her instructions. I understand that sometimes people gets mad because the teachers interrupt at every 3 seconds, but, this is the proposal of a masterclass. But ok, I tought that the girl in the video did not act soooo rude. Just a bit. I want to be a very good Cellist, and really want to teach good classes.

It does seem rude to you. Thats a fact. May or may not seem rude to others. I put my flute down by my side when my teacher is talking. And i dont start blowing in it until they are done speaking to me I would not, and have not the begun playing all my teachers still speaking. From what I've seen that's how most others do it too. Whether it's local master classes in my city, or a long one master class, or a Yo-Yo Ma Master Class, or any other Master Class I've seen on KZread.

Alex Marques Almeida she probably didn't realize she was doing it. Happens to me in the moment as well.

In this case, the student sounds better than the teacher. Better tone and intonation. Her version is so much warmer and expressive.
