video8 Vs. video Hi8

i finally got a Hi8 tape, and wanted to compare old to new. both tapes were ingested over s-video cable into premiere pro via DV-AVI codec.

to be honest, i was hoping for a much greater span of difference. it appears Hi8 has more contrast ratio. especially looking at the canon camera, the Hi8 shows a darker (closer to the eye) shade of grey. and my hat is also a darker (closer to real life) shade of red. so i guess the extra lines of resolution help resolve better color accuracy? thats a plus i suppose. maybe on a crt the differences are more dramatic???

The big improvement with Hi8 over video 8 was the audio.

I am actually sort of relieved that the difference is minimal. I just came by an old Video8 camera and was wondering if it would even be worth using when compared to Hi8. Thanks for the comparison! It is very interesting.

Both Video8 and Hi8 are 480i. If they were anything else, they wouldn't be playable on analog NTSC Televisions (well, actually the 240p mode used by old video game consoles also worked, but it was sort of an unofficial hack that wasn't really part of the NTSC standard). The difference in their resolution is in how many vertical lines they could show before they got smudged together - or, to put it another way, how many dots they could show across a scanline. In digital resolution terms at 60hz, Video8's resolution is about 240x480i, Hi8 is about 400x480i, and DVD is 720x480i.

The Hi8 format in the UK PAL region was excellent, 400 lines resolution and wonderfully crisp clear detail, free of cross-colour, moire patterning, colour bleed and other defects if you use S-Video sockets and Hi8 or S-VHS tape for editing the camera original master tapes to. It also gave acceptable quality second generation Video8 and VHS copies, if you used the S-Video sockets and good quality Hi Grade or Super High Grade or Extra High Grade / Hi-Fi grade / Pro and Broadcast VHS cassettes on an S-VHS deck, or S-Video sockets and Video8 tape on a Hi8 deck.

The worse quality the better for me as I'm using 8mm as a base to edit and mimic older film, so I ordered video8 tapes instead of hi8 for my canon hi8 camcorder. Thanks for making the video comparison

Video8/Hi8 have a metallized tape that is less susceptible to magnetic fields, unlike VHS. But with Video8/hi8 the tape is noticeably thinner and more susceptible to mechanical wear, moreover, on the sides where the tape is output there are not rollers for transporting the tape, but fixed plastic guides. Another disadvantage of video8/hi8 is that they rewind much more slowly.

I own one, I use it only when an analog tape recording has several lines in the video. The worn out tape works fine in the Digital8, as the only things seen is some blocks and audio glitching. Sort of like TV broadcast interference, but it lasts for a millisecond.

@@khuntingtonSome people saying that Digital 8 camcorders was not good in quality but I don’t think they really is “trash” at least in the most models… Probably some models with small sensors? I have a digital 8 camcorder and is very good to use with Video 8, Hi8 and Digital 8 tapes and it have a good quality even in low light situations and good SteadyShot and nightshot. I will buy some Video 8 and Hi8 tapes!

I am amazed... it looks the same! I thought Hi8 is much better. But in this example, it is not at all. But then - you used a Hi8 camera for both videos? In that case of course there is no change. I mean compare video8 camera footage with hi8 camera footage - that is what I thought this is about.

  • @khuntington

that wouldn't be a fair comparison because cameras change censors and lenses and such. "here's a crappy camera vs a less crappy camera" hi8 is extra lines of resolution. no mater what the camera lens takes in, and 8mm tape by definition *has* to discard some of the information. the comparison was the difference between the tape formats. not the cameras. so same camera, different tapes. allowed the comparison to be valid: which is... not much difference 😇 the hi8 format has ever so slightly better contrast. that was about it

Eric Kelly maybe i'm biased, but in my personal experience as far as camcorder tapes go, video8 tapes hold up WAY better than vhs. i have video8 tapes from 89 that still look crisp and clean on playback. and i have vhs tapes recorded in 2006 that at this point look very bad. i think standard video8 had a few more dots of horizontal dots of resolution as well.

8MM Hollywood releases were a short run format. They reason they didn't succeed was two fold. It did not provide any noticeable picture difference, consumers and stores had already invested heavily in the VHS format they would have to throw away and buy another player, and you mostly had only mono tracks on 8mm. VHS had the ability to have two stereo tracks.

actually yes. you can use both hi8 tapes and digital8 tapes (hi8 and digital8 are the same exact tapes) in a video8 camcorder, but your camcorder will obviously only record and playback in video8, not hi8 nor in digi8 but yes, if you will use blank hi8/digi8 tape in your video8 camcorder, you will be able to record and playback everything absolutely normally

it was just a higher resolution video8mm tape format. as it says on the label, standard 8mm was 240i lines of resolution (1080p, 720p, 480i, video8 was 240i... so basically half the lines of resolution as standard def dvd) Hi8 allowed video at 400i. so it was higher resolution than the 240i standard 8mm, and it got it closer to the native scan line count of crts back in that day (480 scan lines)

@rerolledDK You're almost correct: the number of vertical lines is actually counted on a width equal to the picture height (lookup Lines per Picture Height), so the "digital equivalents" must take into account the aspect ratio of 4:3, which means the final results are 320x480i for Video8 (and VHS), and 533*480i for Hi-8 (and S-VHS).
