This was after the show moved out of its original New York digs (from where the original "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella" originated) for the far more spacious CBS Television City in Hollywood. Ironically, the reason why Jack Narz left the show was that he lived in California, but had to spend most of his time in New York taping "Video Village" and he was trying to save his marriage. The irony is that exactly three weeks into former WNEW-TV's former sportscaster Monty Hall's run, the show moved to California anyway. The shows that Heatter-Quigley was developing were all multiple celebrity-oriented games and, in the case of "The Hollywood Squares," larger-than-life sets, making the cross-country move a necessity. Although NBC owns the kinescope, the pilot of "The Hollywood Squares" was originally marketed to CBS, and it was taped in Studio 33 (later The Carol Burnett Studio and now The Bob Barker Studio) at Television City. Thirty years later, "Squares," hosted by Tom Bergeron, returned to the same studio.

I remember seeing Vidio Village on WSAU Channel 7 Wausau TV. When I was in Grade School. I received the game for my Birthday that year. When my Cousin's came that summer. We had fun playing it together. Thanks for bringing it back to all to see

One of my most favorite shows as a kid in the 60's. Loved the kids version and was lucky enough to have Santa bring me the board game by Milton Bradley. Another favorite was a Saturday AM with Sonny Fox. Two Lucky kids had been pulled out of the audience and while the show was going on they each had a Treasure Chest with hundreds of keys....who ever was able to open the Chest during the show won a treasure trove of TOYS...

You're recalling Sonny Fox' first venture at hosting and co-creating a kids TV game show"Just For Fun!"..StehanieCavano. "Just For FuN!"was seen saturday mornings on WNEW TV Ch.5 in NYC from October 3,1959 to the fall of 1965..BTW..Sonny left that show in the summer of 1965 and Fred Scott:"Uncle Fred"mc'd the program for the remainder of it's run.

That duet was marvelous!

This has to be one of the strangest (in a good way) moments in game show history: Monty Hall singing at 18:50 "People Will Say We're In Love" with contestant Donna Stevens, who played the role of Laurey in "Oklahoma!" just before it left Broadway. Didn't know he could sing. Loved it!

Mr.Hall did perform on some tv specials and he did guest appearances on other tv shows"The Odd Couple" and "Love American Style"..but? He never got the chance to perform on his own tv variety show.

Thanks for posting this!! I remember watching "Video Village" when I was a little kid.. and haven't seen it since. I loved it then but boy does it seem cheesy now! And somewhere in my games closet downstairs is a home version of "Video Village", complete with the little plastic jail and the hour-glass dice roller.

This little gem has been sitting here for 2 years and I just found it. I remember watching this as a kid... also "Video Village Junior" (aka: "Kideo Village"). Thanks so much for uploading it, Ron!

There were a lot of kids on our block and most every one had Milton Bradley games so when we weren't out roller skating we were playing board games. The girls played Mystery Date.

Before "Let's Make a Deal" Monty Hall was like everybody's favorite substitute teacher: They'd plug him in wherever, when the regular got sick, and he always seemed to be an improvement on the usual host!

Eileen Barton is so cute. A doll !

This was one of the biggest memories of my early childhood, and especially considering I saw this show when Jack Narz was host...

I have not heard this tune in 60 years, but I recognized it instantly.

Loved this show as a kid. I still remember the words to the theme song.

I hadn't seen this show since 1960 or 1961,so this was a blast from the past. I don't remember all the singing, however. Almost surreal.

Cool show! I wonder how many people knew what 'video' in Video Village meant back then. Now, it's a common word. Go figure.

Co-hostess Eileen Barton had a big hit record a few years before "Video Village" premiered: "If You Knew You Were Come, I'd Have Baked A Cake". Ms. Barton is probably better known for that record than for her work on this show.

I'd never heard of this show, but I enjoyed the episode.

I remember watching as a kid, but the corn and silly bits really date it terribly. No wonder it was canceled.

No wonder Wayne Brady is so musical on Let's Make a Deal, and Monty likes it.

I had never heard of O'Keefe and Merritt; it was a Los Angeles-based appliance company founded in 1920. Their gas ranges and stand-alone ovens were particularly popular in Southern California in the middle of the 20th Century. Sadly, they are now out of business.

500 pennies back in 1962 is worth around $47 today in 2022.

It's such a fun and innovative idea for a game show. Merrill and Bob were always coming up with fresh, exciting concepts. Yes, Video Village was a low-budget show, but it's not the prizes that make a game great, it's the game.

Just got the board game for my grand kids, they absolutely love it, and watching it on You tube! My fav birthday present ever 60 yrs ago!

I remember this show, it was pre "Let's Make A Deal".

I remember the kids verson

I've read about this series, but have not seen it until now. Thought it was charming, especially Monty Hall's duet with the contestant (I played that segment numerousl times). This episode originally aired on Thursday, 14 June 1962, six months before I was born. This videotaped episode is one of only four that are known to exist at present. But this I must ask: why is the bottom part of the screen blacked out?

My guess would be that the poster was blocking out the TV identification.

One of the weirdest shows ever concocted. As a kid, I loved it. It clearly benefited from its pacing, which was breakneck, and had to be, because it was just like playing some board game at home in which all you did was move spaces forwards or backwards in an effort to reach the finish line. There was no skill involved. A slow-paced Video Village would have been a complete bore. But on TV they threw in the kitchen sink with the songs and audience participation. Of course, I got the home game, which was not nearly as much fun, for the reason given above. You can see that Monty was ready to do his dealing on LMAD with his memory of what to do on each space, the puns on "Finders Keepers" and rapid delivery. Of course, the ending to this clip is sad. They're celebrating the 500th show and, after #501, they were canceled. Boo-o-o-o-o-o-o! Like getting a divorce the day after your wedding anniversary.

Originally? Monty Hall(Maurice/Monty Halpin)wanted to be a doctor..but..his interests in radio and drama sidetracked his plans..and he became a broadcaster in Canada.When he moved to The USA..He hoped that he would become an entertainer...but..the only successes that he had on tv were hosting, co-creating and co-producing TV game shows.

I remember watching game shows that featured one male and one female contestant, and the man would always say what his job was, while the woman would most of the time say, "Oh, I'm just a housewife"

@@WSenator1 In 1962, my mother was scoffing at the "Just a housewife" and "The man is the breadwinner; the wife has it easy" tone on television. So was my father, for that matter. His observation was that any man who couldn't see how hard a full-time mom worked was some sort of idiot, and evidently had never done a lick of housework himself.

I’ll bet they could have used this show if The USA Network decided to go for B&W TV game shows along with Shenanigans if they wanted to go that route in the 1980’s! Or they could have reran this show on stations like WSNL-TV 67 in Smithtown, NY or WBTB-TV 68 in Newark, NJ years before becoming a Home Shopping channel or affiliated with WHT! Or perhaps WQTV 68 in Boston, MA could have aired this or CBN!
