Video shows "miracle" escape after Mount Etna spews lava

A group of tourists and journalist ran for their lives when Mount Etna started spewing volcanic rocks at them in Sicily. The group dodged burning boulders and steam as they rushed for cover. Seth Doane reports.

They allow you to climb the mountain, have a ski lift to the near top and huge trucks to shuttle you around the upper reaches of the volcano. Don’t feel sorry for those that take the chance. It is excellent that there is still some places where one is allowed to take risks at their own peril. Been there, done that!

I went up etna last year right to the top to the crater that collapsed recently! I even stared inside and saw the lava. The guide was paranoid the whole time he was involved in soemthing similar to this but was very careful with us - timings wise he made everyone move at military pace to go up and come down safely - great place to see but I don’t wish to go right up there again!

For all people interested, this is called a Phreatic eruption. A mix of water and Lava causes the water molecules to break into hydrogen which then reacts with the intense heat of the lava causing a steam driven explosion.

Why are people always so surprised and shocked when they get hit by volcanic eruptions when climbing a volcano? Well, yes, obviously it's scary when a sudden blowout gets you while you are hiking along its flanks. But then..... if you aren't prepared for that risk and don't want to be hit by red-hot lava rocks during your holidays here's the solution: Do not climb an active volcano. I climbed Etna last week and I was well aware of the dangers. It just had erupted again 3 weeks before my holidays. If the mountain would have desided to spit while I was there... oh well, fate.

Over time the land has become fertile and beautiful because of the volcanos that are on Hawaii, over millions of years it’s developed into a beautiful land, I mean yeah it’s a dangerous island full of active volcanos but that doesn’t mean people can’t live there it just means they need to be ready to evacuate at any point, also they probably have experts around checking the seismic activity. A near-death experience (NDE) is a profound personal experience associated with death or impending death which researchers claim share similar characteristics. When positive, such experiences may encompass a variety of sensations including detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, total serenity, security, warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light. When negative, such experiences may include sensations of anguish and distress. Nearly getting killed is not a near death experience, there was a time when broadcasters actually cared about using phrases that actually meant what they were trying to say for fear of looking stupid if they use the wrong words, apparently those days are gone.I blame it on Dunning, Kruger.and lashings of self important over confidence.

Etna erupts every year and does this since before written history, and that wasn’t even an out of ordinary eruption (the lava was flowing predictably and slow, the fault was of them at being near the lava flow that they knew was there when it was also near a snow bank. That’s not surprising, that’s reckless). To say that Nostradamus has “predicted this, but worse” referring to this news it’s like to say that he “predicted that would rain a lot” after a news about a guy that went out without an umbrella during a normal storm and got drenched and got a cold: Well, duh!
