Philip Walton,..amazing description of Bjorling's voice; a close friend of mine years ago said Jussi did not sing TO you, no, he sang THROUGH you; truly so. Some people think Bjorling's voice deteriorated with age but it never did. After 1949 his voice gradually grew darker and more dramatic not rapidly [which would show wear and tear] but over a 7-8 year period. He became a lyric-spinto, still retaining most of the lyric qualities of his great voice. The quality of the voice is evident right up to the last performance of his life which was the August 20, 1960 Gotenberg concert. This whole concert is available on BLUEBELL, and CLEARLY shows the voice in top quality! Truly he was the most perfect tenor of all time!

I would be honored to assist in your discovery of Bjorling should you desire it at any time. I deem the five decades between 1930 and 1980 the golden age of opera, given the high number of unsurpassed (and possibly unsurpassable) singers in every role, both male and female. Even considering merely tenor voices, we would be flooded by so many singers whose artistry can't be compared to the dwarfs of present time. Well, among those splendent stars I think one and one only is brighter than anyone else, Jussi Björling. His voice sounded mature when he was young and fresh almost till the end. His greatness is just unspeakable. For baritones my choice is undoubtedly Ettore Bastianini, whereas the utmost bass is Giulio Neri.

Fine as always, but I still look for a recording of Bjorling singing the final high B flat diminuendo. He could have done it but too many discouraged him from trying, it seems. Even he regretted not attempting it on the studio recording from 1955. But in those days few tenors chose to do this. There are some very early recordings, one with Caruso, & the other with Jacques Urlus where both managed it to a certain degree. There were some others during this time as well, apparently.

The appreciation of Bjorling's voice and admiration for him as a tenor has been growing around the world since his death. Many experts consider him the greatest tenor of the 20th century. He was voted the no 1 opera singer of the 20th century; indeed the best of all voices in opera for the century. Someone here mentions that he could hold his own among the italian tenors, but the professionals agree that esentially he became the no 1 tenor of the world from 1935 until his death in 1960. With an impeccable beauty of sound and ease of delivery for 25 years he stood a level above all the great tenors of opera and he still reigns as no 1 today. Ridiculously, someone mentions about being past his prime, but the truth is that the voice darkened from about 1953 until his death. With this maturing of the voice he gained more power in the voice not less. Make a study of his stereo recordings from 1957 until his death and you clearly hear the "new force" of power in the voice. Compare for instance Bjorling's "cielo e mar" from the mid 1930's to his powerful "cielo e mar" from 1958; the difference is a sweet lyric rendering of this area in the early part of his carreer as opposed to a powerful expression of the same aria 25 years later! BRAVO BJORLING!

@@ramonavandermerwe1159 Dear Ramona, we meet again. Bjorling is always mentioned when discussing great tenors and beautiful voices of all time. His name comes up on every list discussing great tenor voices of the past. Bjorling certainly does get the recognition among opera fans that he deserves and is also known for his impeccable line of singing. He was perhaps not the best choice for the heavier roles like Aida, Trovatore in large capacity opera houses like the Met 3767 and Chicago 3563, but JB did do quite well in Stockholm opera house capacity 1180, and other opera houses in Europe. His voice produced quite well on recordings. Bass Jerome Hines: Bjorling sounds like 3 Caruso's on records, but it was virtually a small voice in the house. Hines is referring to the Met. Page 318 of Farkas book. The astounding Bjorling gives us another object lesson in pure singing, combining his ringing, gradually deepening tone with an incomparably lyrical treatment of the line. His Calaf would not , I suspect , hold it's own in the opera house opposite voices of Nilsson/Tebaldi caliber, but we've got it on records, and it's brilliant. Brigit Nilsson recalls that Jussi sang a great Radames with me in Stockholm. The opera house which holds 1180 people, was just right for his voice. I heard his Radames once in Chicago, but found his voice to be a bit small for that role in the big auditorium. No tenor is perfect. The Met reviews show Bjorling doing very well in the roles like Boheme, Rigoletto, Ballo, Faust, and Don Carlo, but not as well in Trovatore, and Tosca. Greats like Corelli, MDM,Tucker, Gigli, GDS were all terrific in different ways, but they also had some short comings. Enjoy

!!saludos!

@Aimiklingsor93 Yes but the film in itself has quite a stupid story. Jussi just sings 2 songs. The main parts are played Alice Babs (our great jazz singer) and Sven Lindberg. (one of the later stars at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.) It is worth seeing just because of the music! (also Lena Olin´s brother Mats has a small part where he - 6 .y .o. and very cute - sings a song by their father Stig.)

Radamès was really one size too big for him. Old timers who heard him sing it with Rysanek in Chicago said that he just let her cover him above the staff in their duet. He never ever pushed, which is sort of the permanent vocal mode for all singers today.

Since when is "pushing" a singers quality? Singing should not be a competition battle, isn´t it. Perhaps this was his way to get around with the overwhelming hysterical manners of Rysanek, she was extremely narcissistic.

Do i see Jussi`s shoulders rise as he inhales? Would that be clavicular breathing? Or is he lifting his entire upper body on the inhale? Thanks for posting this, much appreciated.

If you take a really deep breath your diaphragm and abdomen will expand. And usually this causes your chest to rise and allow room. So therefore his shoulders went up. Also many times older singers would raise their chest before taking their fullest breath, to allow more expansion and lift in the rib cage

As good as if not bettter than the best male voice ever; at least Gigli or Caruso etc with something else perhaps? They were superb too. "Overlooked" someone, what world can you inhabit to say such a thing. "Boring" someone else says. Worse than stupid

what a bullshit. Here on you tube there is a program of 2 hours and more with recordings live. I like Benjamino Gigli also. I followed the breath and it was breath taking. Lauri-Volpi, Merli and the last great tenors Domingo and Carreras

O.K This is a good tenor, and that is it. There is no best tenor, I have my favorite,. The most people who like to compare are Franco Corelli fans. Why? Domingo sang better without Pertille things. I like every good singer, I even like Frank Tenaglia. May be not the best, but he sings with such passion. Kenneth Brannagh wanted to play Wallander, thereis only one who calls his dog Jussi.

I think it is his phrasing I find disappointing. It's not "Italian" in style" He has a lovely lyric tenor voice, very bright. Although his top notes, when singing forte, sound strained.
