In Austria, the Conservatives recently formed a governing coalition with the far-right FPÖ party. Some FPÖ members are suspected of having joined Burschenschaften, fraternities accused of extremism and even links to Neo-Nazism. Earlier this week, Austria's chancellor said he would shut one of these fraternities following an outcry over revelations the group used a songbook that praised the Holocaust. Our correspondents Vianey Lorin and Anthony Mills got a rare glimpse into this secretive world.
A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett, Rebecca Martin and Laura Burloux.

Fraternities are libertarian! Also there were tons of jewish fraternities. To what members a given fraternity accepts, that depends on the fraternity. E.g. in mine we have syrian, iranian, english, chinese, Kazakh, bulgarian and luxembourgish members. Our slogan is "amicitia, honor, patria", so we do have the national principal. But our definition is, like 90% of fraternities who do not get recognition because there is no drama to report about, that we want people who give their best for and love germany. No matter their origin, quite the opposite actually; what is better than someone from the other side of the world making the conscious decision to live and study in germany, to then become a part of this ancient tradition? That's someone who truly loves germany and wants to be a part of it, why would we alienate him? The reason we are under constant suspicion is because we have the "conventsgeheimnis". We are completely democratic and everything is decided by majority vote at a weekly gathering, where outsiders have no access to and nobody is allowed to talk about. Of course this secrecy leads to suspicion, like in all secretive societies, but one has to understand our history to get why we still have it. Fraternities date back to the medieval era and the Burschenschaften, Landsmannschaften and Turnerschaften were the first national, libertarian and democratic forces in german lands, hence they suffered a lot of persecution. In our modern society this may seem dated, but you only have to go back to the third reich to see its importance. In the end hitler banned all fraternities, despite them being such a major german tradition, because the nazi party simply wasn't able to gain control over them, exactly due to this nowadays so often criticized convents-secret. In the end we are just a bunch of young male students, that live together in a big house, that gain guidance, tutoring and support by our senior members, that all have demonstrated in a couple of duels that they are committed to this close circle of friends and stand by their word and honor, that like german traditions, love to party and want to be more than just regular students. Every weekend we have at least one event, either we are visiting fraternities in other cities, go on an excursion - often to sites you normally wouldn't have otherwise access to, or have seminars by hired guest docents on everything from dining etiquette, time management, organizing, stress management, to new computer programs that are handy for our academic work. Alternatively there could be a mensur (duel) day, where you meet tons of other students or academics from across germany, austria, tirol and Switzerland with whom you can exchange ideas and build up a network and so on and so on. It is an alternative lifestyle, that focuses way more on community than on the single person and is aimed at building strong, successful and leading characters that benefit our german fatherland and its people. But mainly it is just a hell lot of fun with a great bunch of crazy people and a commitment to friends for a lifetime!

boahkeinbockmehr That’s not how “fraternities” work in Austria. They’re only open to wealthy, well-connected, rich and white catholic Austrians. Most of them have swastikas and nazi flags in their basements.

@@royalcupgame As I understand it both of you are correct, the "Burschenschaften" tend to be elitist, pan-German nationalist, and often times racist, but they are only one type of traditional German fraternity. The "Corps" on the other hand are older, even more elitist, but they also traditionally maintain a much more open attitude to different political stances. These differences between the Burschenschaften the Corps primarily come from the fact that the former emerged from the German nationalist revolutions of 1848 while the latter began as Enlightenment intellectual clubs for discussing philosophy and politics in the 18th century. There is also the "Türnerschaften" which are athletes fraternities founded in the late 19th century that or may practice Mensur. Finally there are the Catholic fraternities which are socially conservative but who strongly oppose Mensur as being un-Christian and contrary to the Church's traditional anti-dueling stance.
